On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on fitness professional Dustin Maher came on to talk about his quest to get 1,000,000 moms in the best shape of their lives. Inspired by his own mom Dustin has lots of materials to help women get back in their pre mom shape. First he says to take care of yourself first – like they say on airplanes – put your oxygen mask on before you put it on your kid. His holiday party tip was to make sure you are eating healthy when you are alone so you can splurge a little when you go out to holiday parties. But he said that you only get one trip through the buffet line. And eat your protein becuase that will make you feel full. Then go strong with the veggies. Also slow down while you eat which also will make you feel full. To learn more please go to www.dustinmaherfitness.com

Jagers, BobBob Jagers was born in Chicago in 1922.  He later moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he attended Aquinas College.  After two years of school, Bob enlisted in the Navy.  He was assigned to a very large transport vessel called a Landing Ship Tank, or LST.  Bob was involved in four invasions, including the Normandy invasion at Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  Bob was later decorated for his role in treating wounded soldiers during the D-Day invasion.  Bob returned home, and married his wife, Rose, in 1946.  He later received both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Chemical Engineering.  He worked for Chrysler Corporate for more than 20 years, and retired in 1979.  Since then, Mr. Jagers, at the age of 88, stays young by tutoring kids every week.  He has authored two books, “Whales of WWII” and a book for kids, “The Inedible BLT”.  To reach Mr. Jagers, or order one of his books, email him at rbjagers@hotmail.com.

Finkley, Leslie Compressed

Raised in Ohio, Leslie Finkley knew early on that she wanted to work with seniors.  After graduating from University of Virginia with her Masters in Counseling, she thought she would have a career counseling seniors.  She soon discovered that not too many seniors wanted the advice of a 24 year old!  Consequently, Leslie decided to start working with seniors to get them more involved in day to day activities.  This seemed to hit their sweet spot, and hers as well.  Today, Leslie loves her job as the Activities Director at Arbor Terrace at Crabapple, where she helps her residents stay engaged through all different types of activities.  At the same time, she now offers her counseling service to residents on a weekly basis!  Leslie can be reached at 770-649-1009, or visit the community at www.at-crabapple.com.

Beville, PK CompressedTo do justice to PK Beville’s resume’ would take many, many pages!  She holds an MS in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Kentucky University, is a Certified Medical Assistant and a Certified General Mediator.  She is the CEO of Geriatric Specialists, and is the Founder and President of Second Wind Dreams, a non-profit organization that is committed to both education of Caregivers, and to the fulfillment of Seniors’ dreams.  One of PK’s most important achievements is the development of a program called the Virtual Dementia Tour.  This program gives hope to those affected with Alzheimers and other dementia-related illnessses by giving family caregivers and healthcare professionals a glimpse into the world of the Dementia patient.  This is done through a visual, sensory and tactical simulation that is absolutely eye-opening to participants!  To learn more about the Virtual Dementia Tour, Second Wind Dreams or Geriatric Specialists, contact PK at (678) 624-0500, or email her at pk@secondwind.org.  Visit their website at www.secondwind.org.

Jamie Oliver Food Revolution Backlash

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why there is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution backlash. First, we are big fans of what Jamie is trying to do. Moving kids away from processed school food to a more fresh and healthful menu is a good idea. And sadly we have such bureaucracy in the school system that it is difficult to make these changes. And are we really shocked that when given a choice between stir fried vegetables and french fries more kids want the fries. Jamie should be congratulated for even trying and his methods should be implemented over a long time rather than a few weeks. And guess what, when the kids have only choices between healthy foods then they will prefer eating healthy food. And parents I don’t really care if my kid prefers chicken nuggets or pizza over veggies – our job is to feed them foods high in nutrition not just foods they like to eat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy’s Wellness Minutes improve your health in 3 minutes a day or less. iTunes Follow us on Twitter @FatGuy and @DrFitness6

Delmar Crew 1Jennifer Thilo will tell you that she has one of the best jobs in the world.  After listening to her residents rave about Delmar Gardens, we think you may agree.  Jennifer has been the Executive Director of Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett for nearly 15 years.  After majoring in English and Poetry, it was natural for her to gravitate toward serving the senior population (Hmmm…).  Jennifer attributes the success of her community to the incredible team that supports her on a daily basis.  We think it may have to do with the fact that there’s no job that she asks her staff to do that she wouldn’t do herself (including driving the bus!)

Delmar, Beckford compressedOne of the most important roles in Delmar Gardens’ skilled nursing community is the Director of Social Services.  Hilly Beckford accomplishes this task with enthusiasm and passion.  Even as a teenager, Hilly says that she enjoyed her mom’s friends more than the kids her own age.  She agrees with Jennifer with respect to the team of professionals that comprise the Delmar Gardens family.  Hilly notes, “Walls don’t give people care, people do”.  This philosophy seems to permeate the entire Delmar Gardens team.

Delmar, Anderson, DorisFor the first time, Eugeria! Radio had the privilege of chatting directly with a number of individuals that are on the receiving end of the senior services market.  Their stories are funny and compelling.  Doris Anderson is from Norfolk, Virginia.  She is the Resident Counci President, and is active in the Bridge Club.  She’s been a resident of Delmar Gardens for four years.  Her advice  to our listeners is to stay upbeat, have faith, and don’t worry!

Olympia LaMattina moved to Delmar Gardens with her husband just over two years ago.  After his passing, Olympia tells us that the community at Delmar Gardens rallied around her to help her realize that she had friends there that were committed to supporting her through the grieving Delmar Wyattprocess.  Salty Wyatt was captured in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.  He spent 4 1/2 months as a prisoner of war, then went back and spent 15 years as a hurricane hunter.  After an additional 22 years with Wachovia, he finally retired.  His wife, Lillian’s claim to fame is that she put up with him for so many years.  She wishes he would go back to work!  (Just kidding!)

Yet another fabulous line up on the Chic Perspectives Show this week.  Laura Scholz of Scholz Communications http://www.facebook.com/scholzcommunications and CRAVE Atlanta was my guest cohost this week on the Chic Perspectives Show.  So we got to chat about all that’s up with CRAVE and the great events going on around Atlanta.  For more on all that go to  http://thecravecompany.com/atlanta/

Our first guest was Jennifer Shields Founder & President, Posh Tot Events

After a 12 year corporate career in marketing Jennifer Shields left corporate America, (and all the perks) behind, to follow her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. She turned her passion for planning events into Posh Tot Events, a full service event planning company that specializes in children’s birthday parties and baby showers

Jennifer talked about why someone would hire an event planner for a kids birthday party.

  • Posh Tot Events provides a niche service for busy moms that want to throw a great party for their children but are short on time, creativity or both!
  • Posh Tot Events takes ALL of the stress out planning a party making it fun and relaxing for the moms
  • We are offering a summer Princess Camp this year for girls that is targeted towards 4-6 year olds with an emphasis on manners and etiquette. Registration info available at poshtotevents.com
  • We have several themes for boys as well as girls and many of our clients come back year after year and always get something fresh and new.

Be sure to check them out @ www.poshtotevents.com

And become a friend of Posh Tot Events @ Facebook.com/poshtotevents

Keep up with the latest @ twitter/jenshieldsATL

Next up were the wonderful women of roam Atlanta, a one-of-a-kind business cafe and meeting space that is open to the pulic located at 5815 Windward Parkway Suite 302, Alpharetta, United States, 30005

www.roamatlanta.com

Susan Rae, roam writer and Marketing Director and Gale Middleton, the Director of Membership @ roam Atlanta joined me in the studio.

Suan and Gale talked about how members and patrons enjoy free wifi in the cafe and can order breakfast, lunch, coffee, wine & beer.  They also have access to 8 small, medium, and large conference rooms for private meetings, seminars, and networking events.

Susan promotes roam sponsored & member events as well as launching roam’s marketing programs.  Gale provides support to members to help them grow their businesses.

I can speak from experience and say that roam offers “insanely great” meeting experiences.  f you are the kind of person who wants to maintain a professional image without paying for expensive office space or meeting clients in coffee shops, roam is the place for you.

  • roam is the only co-working and meeting space that is open to the public.
  • roam serves its patrons as a co-working spot, its members as a private meeting space and corporations as an off site meeting space, and the community with seminars, special interest groups and education.
  • roam members get marketing support as part of their membership.  They promote their events via the roam newsletter, website, social media sites and with flyers and inhouse marketing and through the Georgia Alliance of Private Clubs.
  • roam patrons meet other entrepreneurs in the cafe and at events to network, share experiences and make new connections.

Susan and Gale told us all about a new program roam just launched called the “Get a Room” campaign.  They are offering 2 hours free in a small conference room with free coffee service of their award winning custom blend – Just mention that you heard about it on the show – and stop by roam Atlanta and take advantage of this great free offer to try the place out – and get a room!

roam has also formed a relationship with Steelcase Corporation and is test driving their media:scape collaboration furniture from April 13-May 1.  They also have a new series especially for women call WE @ roam: Women Entrepreneurs, Women of Excellence and Women’s Events – Check out what’s coming up:

  • The One-page Business Plan Workshop is Wed. April 21 from 9-11am
  • Shop the Swap: Clothing & Accessory Swap – Sat April 24, 2-4pm, with dropoff 11:30-1:00pm
  • And I’m speaking there at an after hours mixer on May 6th at 6pm  – so you know that will be awesome : )
