Have you had one of these chats, only to find it was awkward, and didn’t end the way you had hoped? Join Sam and Brad as they talk about a new YouTube video project called Eugeria! Live! This project will be initially launched as a series of short videos focused on how to successfully engage a loved on in a difficult conversation. We will provide general tips on planning and executing the conversation, and specific topical videos covering things like driving, hygiene, dementia and many more. Adapting to a new environment – Melissa Davis of Laurel Creek Manor

Melissa Davis got involved in senior care by letting her fingers do the walking! She wanted to help seniors, and found her first community by looking in the Yellow Pages. Originally from a small town near Youngstown, Ohio, Melissa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology at the North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega.

Today, Melissa is the Social Director at Laurel Creek Manor, an assisted living community with 50 residents, 12 of which are in a Memory Care Community. She notes that one of the things that demonstrate the quality of the community and its care is the fact that they are completely full, with a waiting list. She loves her job, and is rewarded by the interactions with her residents every day. Laurel Creek Manor works very hard to assist new residents in adapting to their new environment Melissa recommends that setting proper expectations is key, particularly with respect to the amount of time it could take to adapt.

One of Melissa’s passions is the fight to end Alzheimer’s. As such, she has participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the last three years. This year, Laurel Creek Manor is having a fund raiser at their community on September 15, with food, music and games. Helping Georgia’s Alzheimer’s Families – Sheri Maddox, of Sunrise Johns Creek

A rare native Atlantan, Sheri Maddox attended Georgia State University, earning an undergraduate degree in business. She started her career in sales. Not too long after graduation, Sheri’a grandmother passed away. Her grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001, and needed to move out of his house to a community where he could get the care and attention he needed. As Sheri became involved in her grandfather’s care, she realized how much she felt called to work as an advocate for seniors.

Today, Sheri is the Director of Community Relations for Sunrise of Johns Creek. She loves the resources that Sunrise brings to bear in providing a safe, secure, caring and compassionate home for seniors – particularly those with some cognitive impairment.

Sheri also advocates for seniors through her volunteer work with the Alzheimer’s Association. She got involved with this organization as a result of her grandfather’s diagnosis, and has found a place where she can really make a difference. Our listeners can help Sheri make a difference by attending a terrific evening of food, cocktails and entertainment on September 13, from 6pm to 9pm at 56 East Andrews in Buckhead. Cooking for Caregivers – Eugeria! Chats with Lisa Lowe

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Lisa Lowe moved southward to the DC area and on to North Carolina, where she did the majority of her growing up. As she recalls, the food industry was not a planned career for her, but got bitten by the bug and has stayed with it for the last 25 years.

Climbing the ranks in restaurant and hotel management, Lisa moved on to contract food service management where she stayed for 19 years. Knowing that her position as a Support Chef in healthcare would at some point end, she decided to start her own business, Cooking for Caregivers. Healthcare is an amazing field to work in so her business was built around cooking for those who could no longer cook for themselves or the overwhelmed caregiver. Her own experience as a caregiver to her in-laws made her realize what a daunting task it can be.

Cooking is Lisa’s passion, however it’s also about establishing relationships with those that she cooks for. She recognizes that it’s just food, but if she can bring a smile to someone’s face that means everything to her. Keeping your aging loved ones safe on the road – Jennifer Curry

Born and raised in a small town in Ohio, Jennifer Curry attended Ohio State University and received a degree in Womens’ Studies. After graduation she started her career working in libraries. It wasn’t until fifteen years later that she moved to Atlanta and began taking classes at Emory University. There she earned her Masters in Public Health. Along the way Jennifer also earned a Certificate in Aging from Boston University’s School of Social Work.

Though, in Jennifer’s words “it took a long time to get here”, she realizes that she was moved to serve seniors from an early age when a nursing home was built at the end of her small “dead-end” street, and she and her mother volunteered there. Today, Jennifer is a Program Consultant for the Older Driver Safety Program in the Office of Injury Prevention, and part of the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Andrea Williams and Erin Elliott discuss American Cancer Society’s Patient Resource Navigator Program

Erin Elliott was born, raised and educated in Austin, Texas; Andrea Williams, in Massachusetts. Both were interested in pursuing careers in technical fields early on, but were pulled to a career serving people. Erin earned degrees from both Texas State University and University of Texas at Austin. In 2003, Erin accepted her first position with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Austin. In 2008, Erin moved to Atlanta. Today she is a Patient Resource Navigator for ACSat Northside Hospital.

Andrea is a more recent transplant having migrated here via Charleston, South Carolina about a year ago. Andrea is a Patient Resource Navigator for ACS at Dekalb Medical Center. The American Cancer Society, and its Patient Resource Navigator program is, in Andrea’s words, “all about saving lives and having more birthdays”! She and Erin spend their days helping make their patients’ live just a little easier by helping locate resources for transportation, accommodations,

financial assistance and much more. Not only do they coordinate the resource of the American Cancer Society, but they

bring together a vast array of resources that would be impossible for patients to assemble on their own.

Craig Smith, Owner of Vest Properties

As the weather starts to heat up, Craig and Carol Smith, Owners of Vest Properties, are hoping for indoor remodeling jobs! Craig has always been around the construction industry. His father was a general contractor, and one of the first to specialize in insurance repair. Craig spent his summers working these construction jobs. Having been born & raised in DeKalb County, he has spent 35 years in construction in Atlanta.

Craig earned his Bachelors Degree in Architectural Engineering Technology from Southern Tech in Marietta. Upon graduation, he joined his father in business on a full-time basis. In addition to the insurance work, they also started doing remodeling. After the birth of their daughter, Craig and Carol wanted for Carol to be able to work from home. To do this, they started Vest properties.

A few years ago, the National Association of HomeBuilders (NAHB) offered a program called Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). This program intrigued Craig and Carol, as they had already observed that the majority of their customers were over 55. Sandi Thurber and Elizabeth Joseph from Gwinnett Extended Care Center

To anyone that speaks to Sandi Thurber, it is apparent that she loves her job, and is personally motivated by helping families in times of crisis and need. Educated in Sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi, Sandi began working with older adults on a part-time basis as the Activities Coordinator in a nursing home. After many years at both Meadowbrook and Delmar Gardens, she accepted her current position as a social worker at Gwinnett Extended Care Center (GECC) about six years ago.

Elizabeth Joseph came to the US from India twenty five years ago. When she came here, she intended to be a teacher. When she found it difficult to find a teaching job, she went back to school, and earned her RN degree. She moved to Atlanta 17 years ago, and accepted a position with the Gwinnett Medical system 14 years ago. Though she wears a multitude of hats, her primary role at GECC is to assist patients with their Medicare and insurance needs.

GECC is an 89 bed facility located adjacent to the main Gwinnett Medical Center campus in Lawrenceville. Sandi tells us this that being a part of the Gwinnett Medical system, and being co-located with the campus is a tremendous benefit for their patients, in that, there are a host of resources available that would not be easily accessible in another location. Cambria Smith intended to spend her career serving children. She earned a degree from Florida State University in Family & Consumer Services, then ended up working in health and life insurance. About six years ago she got involved in finding a Medicare solution for her grandmother.
