Plan for Success E132

Gary Hutchison worked his way up the corporate ladder before fulfilling his dream of owning his own business. He bought SSI Manufacturing in 2007 and throughout his years of experience he has learned the importance of having the right team and support system. He has also learned the importance of effective communication and adapting to the changing circumstances of running a business.

Tune in to hear about the lessons Gary has learned about running a business and how the recent changes have affected small business.

SSI Manufacturing Technologies is a contract manufacturer of CNC precision machined parts, components and assemblies. The company is AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 certified, registered with the US State Department and ITAR Compliant, is a Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and has been granted a Federal Firearms License by the BATF.

SSI is known for it’s expertise in manufacturing parts with complex geometries held to very close tolerances even when machining parts from the ‘exotic’ corrosion resistant, extreme temperature, and high strength materials such as Inconel, Monel, Duplex Stainless Steel, Titanium and many others.

Primary markets served are Aerospace (Including the rapidly growing Space segement), Defense, Firearms, Subsea Oil and Gas, and specialty Automotive. SSI’s customers in these markets flow down blueprints, Solid Models, Work Instructions and other information which provide the specifications and tolerances for the parts to be machined, the type of material to be used when manufacturing the part, and if any non-machining processes are required such as Heat Treat, Anodize, Platings or other types of Protective Finishes.

Gary-Hutchison-Tycoons-of-Small-BizPenny and Gary Hutchison acquired SSI Manufacturing Technologies as a going concern in 2007. They are the third owners of the company since it was founded over 50 years ago. When purchasing SSI, Penny became the majority shareholder with Gary owning the rest of the stock of the company. When the youngest of their five children graduated High School a few years later, Penny began working at SSI in several different capacities and now is Chief Executive Officer.

Gary obtained his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). Upon graduation, he joined the Kimberly-Clark Corporation at a large forest products, pulp and paper mill in Alabama as a Financial Analyst. Kimberly-Clark’s Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer maintained an office and primary residence at that location and two years later Gary was invited to become a member of his Staff. Over the next 10 years, Gary held a variety of Marketing, Product Management, and Corporate Strategic Planning roles and assignments in Atlanta, GA and Dayton, OH.

In 1994, Gary joined Champion International, a global manufacturer of printing, writing and publication papers and moved with his family to Connecticut, where he and Penny still live. In 2001, Champion was acquired by International Paper and Gary was offered and accepted a Division General Management position with IP to merge two separate Engineered Wood Products facilities (Calgary, Alberta and Birmingham, AL into one unit.

Still, Gary had always wanted to own and manage a manufacturing company at some point in his career, and also to be in a position to determine major decisions that affected his family, especially as the downsizing and consolidation in the Paper and Forest Products industries accelerated. This eventually led to the purchase of SSI Manufacturing Technologies in 2007.

Dustin Carreon spent his early years learning just how hard life could be. After joining his father’s one-person operation scrap business, he had a dream to grow and make something bigger. He took that vision and made it something real. He learned the value of his time and the importance of delegating to the right people.

Tune in to hear about how Dustin went from a two-person company to a holding company that operates four separate companies. Learn more about Dustin at www.coiholdings.org or find him on LinkedIn.

COI-Holdings-logo

C.O.I. Holdings is a holding company that acquires, manages, and grows small businesses. COI mission is to create opportunities by acquiring a small business, creating value for employees and customers, and helping owners/founders with an easy transition onto their next venture.

In addition to Freelance Electronics, which Dustin Carreon founded in 1996, COI holdings own and operates three industrial supply businesses in California and the State of Washington.

Dustin-Carreon-Tycoons-of-Small-BizDustin Carreon grew up with a father in the scrap and precious metal business. He was attracted to the hustle and grind of buying and selling junk. Dustin Carreon eventually joined his father’s one-person operation scrap business.

The scrap business opened the doors to recycling old computers and electronics. With his father’s backing and encouragement, Dustin Carreon launched an electronic component distribution business from a modest 1200 SQF warehouse in 1996.

Freelance Electronics grew as a result of the technology boom. In 2001 Dustin Carreon acquired 51% shares of the company he didn’t own. Over the next 10-15 years, the business had many booms and busts related to the cyclical nature of electronics.

Seeing an opportunity to diversify from economic swings, in 2017, Freelance Electronics acquired a 40-year-old industrial and defense fastener company to operate as a stand-alone company.

Today, Dustin Carreon and an incredible team operate a total of 4 companies, including Freelance Electronics, B&B Sockets, Quest Fasteners, and Sierra Pacific Supply.

E8-Courageously-Curious

Courageously Curious E8

This episode is in Dutch. How do we stay grounded in authentic wisdom and purposefulness, without losing ourselves in our individual perspective? “We need to stay deeply curious about perspectives different from ours,” says Greet Prins, Chairman of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, and inquire into the underlying reasons why people hold these perspectives.

Greet speaks to the power of staying open and actively absorbing diverse opinions without getting lost in them. She also shares how we stay connected to others as human beings when there are polarized views. And she shares how staying focused on the greater good helps us lead through challenge and change. Listen to this episode of Rooted & Unwavering and contemplate how to bring different perspectives together in our own hearts and lead from that deeper, integrating, authentic place.

The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce is an independent administrative body under the supervision of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. They are managed at a national level, with links to the regions, with substantive input from our consultation boards: the Central Board and five Regional Boards.

With 18 offices, including five OnderNemerSpleinen (Entrepreneurs’ Plazas) across the regions, it means that they are close to entrepreneurs and to the regions. The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce OnderNemerSplein is the meeting point for entrepreneurs, government, education and other intermediaries, and aims to help entrepreneurs advance with their businesses. And it is where partners join forces to do business successfully.

The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce is headed by the members of the Board of Directors. In addition to their administrative responsibility, these members also assume operational responsibility for one or more parts of the organisation. This ensures swift and direct decision-making.

Greet-Prins-Rooted-and-UnwaveringGreet Prins is the Chairman of The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce.

Developing a vision is the first step, actually realizing it requires a balance between being stable and being flexible where necessary.

It is important to rely on trust, both at a distance and in close proximity. The wishes and needs of customers are guiding.

We ask ourselves: can we do better? Leadership also means being future-oriented and having an overview of developments in society: bringing the outside world in. In this way we can work together on future-proof and sustainable organizations.

About Our Host

Hylke-Faber-headshotFor as long as he can remember Hylke Faber has been curious about what this life is about. His ongoing inquiry has become his work: helping people individually and collectively to discover what is possible in life and express that authentically and fearlessly.

Hylke started his work life with Towers Perrin as consultant and then as Partner with Strategic Decisions Group, serving a wide range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, consumer electronics and life sciences companies. A major shift occurred during this critical phase of his life. He had become the typical, hard-charging, 16-hours-a-day strategy consultant, and was burning out at a rapid clip.

When he discovered meditation, everything changed. He was so taken by his new discoveries that he chose to bring to business what he was learning: that there is a way we can have it all – we can be fulfilled, do work we love, and create extraordinary results with others. He thinks of it as creating a sense of ease in business.

He learned how to coach and facilitate human transformation completing his coaching certification with Newfield Network and by working at Axialent, the culture and leadership company. After a few years, he founded Co-Creation Partners together with other leaders in the field of transformation and personal development. Then he formed Constancee to help people grow by creating the conditions where deep personal, interpersonal and organizational shifts happen routinely.

He leads Growth Leaders Network, the culture and team development consultancy. He has also taught coaching at Columbia Business School Executive Education and has contributed to Harvard Business Review. He is currently teaching a course on Climate Conscious Leadership at Arizona State University. His award-winning book, Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader, was published by Dover in 2018.

His next book, Taming Your Crocodiles Practices for Leadership Depth, came out in 2020. Besides helping others grow, which he loves, he is a trained opera singer, enjoys hiking and writing, is an avid reader, in particular of biographies, and is always in the process of growing himself. He integrates all of what he learns in his work with executives.

Did you know a fussy baby is not normal?! Common, but not normal. The doctors share how they can non-invasively identify what is contributing to the fussiness and use that information to focus their adjustments allowing the body to heal itself.

About The Messy Middle Podcast & Radio Show

The-Messy-Middle-logo“Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad but it’s the middle that counts the most.”- Hope Floats

We often talk about the beginnings and endings of things. We celebrate our firsts and mourn our lasts. We often ignore the in between, or what we like to call the messy middle. In this nebulous space, often there are no awards or recognition.

It is frequently characterized by the long days, hard work, uncertainty, self-doubt, small wins, setbacks, persistence, and sheer determination to simply keep moving forward. And, yet, it is also where the magic happens. The middle part of our journey is what shapes us, prepares us and fills our lives with meaning.

Welcome to the Messy Middle Podcast & Radio show! Each month we invite guests to share their own version of the Messy Middle and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Whether you’re in the messiness of growing a business, healing from trauma, or navigating the wild world of parenting; this show is for you! We’re so excited to celebrate the messiness of life and business with you!

Gene-Leyzarovich-Tycoons-of-Small-BizMore than 30 years ago, Gene Leyzarovich arrived in his new home of Pittsburgh as a refugee from Moscow, Russia. Only two years later, while he was completing his education at the University of Pittsburgh and working night shifts at UPMC, Gene founded Advanced Computer & Network Corporation (AC&NC) to build high-performance JetStor (US federal trademark) storage systems and he has never looked back.

In over 28 years in business, AC&NC has installed its JetStor RAID (redundant array of independent disks) systems for over 4,000 clients in numerous locations in the United States, Canada, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, and Australia.

A finalist in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2016 and the winner Immigrant of the Year Global Pittsburgh – Technological Innovation in 2017, Gene recognizes that risk-taking is an inherent part of running a small business that is in direct competition with multi-billion dollar corporations. The challenge of that competition and the thrill of coming ahead have motivated Gene to develop AC&NC JetStor as a nimble company that meets the customer’s needs in creative and innovative ways, including his involvement with new partners at the development stages of new products.

Gene has been a sponsor of USENIX, a 501(c)(3) Advanced Computing Systems Association, for 15 years. Gene has been a founding sponsor of the League of Professional System Administrators and a member of Pittsburgh Technology Council.
