Exploring Student Leadership E25

Engaging with student leaders and empowering their voice in decision making is the key to the continued success of the Chief Science Officers Program at SciTech Institute. During the show, learn how CSOs use their voices for change on campus and in their communities. Consider your own role in the journey of others, especially in STEM.

The conversation revolves around the experience with Chief Science Officers in Pennsylvania’s PA SEED Cabinet and collaborations with the STEM Ecosystem network. CSOs are required to complete at least one Action Plan during the year. Many students work together and do more than one to amplify student voice. These student STEM ambassadors are inspired to bring their peers and community leaders together to ignite new opportunities in STEM and innovation. Through digital support systems and opportunities, CSOs encourage each other to find success. It is an incredible network of changemakers.

Chief Science Officers is a program that allows students grades 6-12 around the world to create an impact on their communities. They are given the resources, guidance, and networks they need to promote STEM to their peers and the world around them. The CSO program not only enriches the community but also the CSOs themselves as they learn soft skills that are vital to successfully complete their action plans.

Sneha-Indrakanti-STEM-UnpluggedSneha Indrakanti is a 4th year Chief Science Officer. She is from Hatboro-Horsham High School and is part of the Pennsylvania Seed Cabinet.

While COVID 19 has had an impact on her journey as a CSO, she worked with her fellow CSOs at her school to continue to promote STEM through online posts and eventually was able to teach the STEM class at her local elementary school.

This year she will be involved in a leadership role in the cabinet.

About The Messy Middle Podcast & Radio Show

The-Messy-Middle-logo“Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad but it’s the middle that counts the most.”- Hope Floats

We often talk about the beginnings and endings of things. We celebrate our firsts and mourn our lasts. We often ignore the in between, or what we like to call the messy middle. In this nebulous space, often there are no awards or recognition.

It is frequently characterized by the long days, hard work, uncertainty, self-doubt, small wins, setbacks, persistence, and sheer determination to simply keep moving forward. And, yet, it is also where the magic happens. The middle part of our journey is what shapes us, prepares us and fills our lives with meaning.

Welcome to the Messy Middle Podcast & Radio show! Each month we invite guests to share their own version of the Messy Middle and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Whether you’re in the messiness of growing a business, healing from trauma, or navigating the wild world of parenting; this show is for you! We’re so excited to celebrate the messiness of life and business with you!

From a Chance Encounter in a Convertible to VP of Real Estate Development with Josh Tracy E13

Josh Tracy – VP of Real Estate Development at Ryan Companies US, Inc. shared an insightful perspective of what it’s like to be a national general contractor/developer. Josh attended ASU and was Ryan Companies’ first direct hire out of an undergrad program to be on their development team.

At Ryan Companies, we believe the value of the buildings we design, develop, finance, manage and construct is about more than dollars and cents – it’s also about the value they bring to the people who use them and the communities that surround them. That’s why we focus first on the “why” so we can give life to your vision and achieve the best possible outcome.

As a national leader in commercial real estate services, we know that our customers are as unique as their projects. That’s why, day after day, we’re driven to uncover their stories. To be inspired by what inspires them. To bring the right people to the table so we can collaborate on a deeper, more engaging level.

Together, we build something far more profound than the physical presence of a building. We build the backdrops to life’s stories.

At Ryan, our values – Safety, Integrity, Respect, Stewardship, Family, Excellence and Fun – define our culture and they shape and ignite the people who join our team. They are more than words in a mission statement, they are the inspiration that guides our decisions and shapes our belief that we offer something no one else can.

In the end, your building is better, your experience working with us more enjoyable, your community more vibrant and your project site safer – all because we embrace our values each day.

Josh-Tracy-MAC-and-BleuJosh Tracy provides valuable, highly strategic leadership as Vice President of Real Estate Development at Ryan Companies US, Inc. As a Phoenix native, Josh strives to make a difference in our community through his professional and personal efforts.

A highly motivated person, Josh started his first business at age 16, providing him with a source of income through high school and college.

After completing his Business Management and Real Estate studies at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, Josh secured a job at Ryan Companies, becoming the first person to be hired onto the Ryan development team straight out of undergrad studies. At Ryan, he has participated in developing over two million square feet of commercial space, creating employment centers for over 10,000 jobs.

Josh has understood the importance of giving back to his community from a young age. In addition to starting his own business, he utilized his love of baseball to help establish an organization to provide afterschool actives called Opportunity Through Baseball with his long-time Coach, Coach Payton.

The program’s goal was not only to provide underprivileged children with a healthy distraction after school but to help the children grow as people and become a “Major League Person.”

In his free time, Josh enjoys hiking and traveling with his wife, Angela. Together they enjoy exploring the world experiencing new cultures, and enjoying the tranquility found in some of the world’s most beautiful outdoor places.

Hylke-Faber-headshotFor as long as he can remember Hylke Faber has been curious about what this life is about. His ongoing inquiry has become his work: helping people individually and collectively to discover what is possible in life and express that authentically and fearlessly.

Hylke started his work life with Towers Perrin as consultant and then as Partner with Strategic Decisions Group, serving a wide range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, consumer electronics and life sciences companies. A major shift occurred during this critical phase of his life. He had become the typical, hard-charging, 16-hours-a-day strategy consultant, and was burning out at a rapid clip.

When he discovered meditation, everything changed. He was so taken by his new discoveries that he chose to bring to business what he was learning: that there is a way we can have it all – we can be fulfilled, do work we love, and create extraordinary results with others. He thinks of it as creating a sense of ease in business.

He learned how to coach and facilitate human transformation completing his coaching certification with Newfield Network and by working at Axialent, the culture and leadership company. After a few years, he founded Co-Creation Partners together with other leaders in the field of transformation and personal development. Then he formed Constancee to help people grow by creating the conditions where deep personal, interpersonal and organizational shifts happen routinely.

He leads Growth Leaders Network, the culture and team development consultancy. He has also taught coaching at Columbia Business School Executive Education and has contributed to Harvard Business Review. He is currently teaching a course on Climate Conscious Leadership at Arizona State University. His award-winning book, Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader, was published by Dover in 2018.

His next book, Taming Your Crocodiles Practices for Leadership Depth, came out in 2020. Besides helping others grow, which he loves, he is a trained opera singer, enjoys hiking and writing, is an avid reader, in particular of biographies, and is always in the process of growing himself. He integrates all of what he learns in his work with executives.

The Down and Dirty of Cookies E117

Bennett Maxwell of Dirty Dough Cookies joined Tycoons to talk about the down and dirty of the cookie business. Dirty Dough has its own unique process that embraces the imperfect cookie and truly represents the concept that life is messy, but it’s meant to be enjoyed. This message is so important to Bennett that he is starting a non-profit addressing mental health and its importance in our overall well-being. Dirty-Dough-Cookies-logo

Bennett has always been an entrepreneur since a young age and learned some important lessons along the way. After taking a course on starting a business, one of his biggest takeaways was the difference between being a small business and a scalable business. He implemented processes to reduce himself within the business so he can work on the business rather than in it.

Check out how the cookie crumbles at Dirty Dough. You’ll eat up its positive message while enjoying a delicious cookie.

Bennett-Maxwell-Tycoons-of-Small-BizBennett Maxwell is an entrepreneur and a business owner with Dirty Dough cookies. Dirty Dough cookies are engineered from the inside out, with every cookie featuring some combination of layers, mix-ins, or filling within the dough.

The unique flavor profiles and trademark gooey goodness of our cookies set us apart from other cookie-cutter brands (see what we did there?).

E108 The Power of Listening with Ruth Bedingfield

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Ruth Bedingfield. Ruth shares her journey working as a PMO Leader and her path to joining KeyedIn supporting customers. Ruth and Joe discuss the importance of listening, how to react when opportunity knocks, and having passion for your work.

Ruth has 15 years of business expertise with 5+ years focused on the Project Management Office. She understands what successful PMOs are doing today to bring value for their businesses tomorrow through working closely with enterprise project management professionals looking to deliver the value outcomes their businesses need. She understands the role of the PMO for today’s evolving businesses and jumps at the opportunity to help PMOs achieve their goals through data-driven insights from powerful project portfolio management software.

Ruth shared how important it is to be adaptive and flexible as a PMO Leader, “So I think I always like in PMO to being on the ocean. Sometimes it’s forever changing, but the ground is never stable. Sometimes the waves are small and it’s like a mill pond, sometimes it’s like a storm and the waves are crashing down around you. But as a PMO, you learn and you adapt to ride those waves. I think agility and adaptability were really key for me to be able to grow in the role of the PMO Officer.”

Many PMOs face the challenge of overcoming the perception of being the Project Management Police. Ruth had great perspective on this, “it was a really interesting journey. When I was able to sort of get hold of the reigns, I was really fortunate to also have the support of some really strong open minded leaders and sponsors as well as PMO that really felt the value. I think that was one key benefit that I certainly benefited from within our organization. But we did a full reset. I said to everybody, just stop, it’s not working. We’re firefighting, for instance. We’re chasing tails, we’re not proactively listening. We need to stop. That’s exactly what we did. And we went back to basics.”
