Loving Fiercely, Living Fearlessly and Learning Forgiveness with Toni Townes-Whitley, E1

Hylke Faber speaks with Toni Townes-Whitley, NASDAQ Board Director and former President of Microsoft US Regulated Industries, about how to lead from a place that is deeply connected to our core. Toni shares insights about how foundational forgiveness is in soulful leadership and that it includes assuming positive intent, taking deep breaths and looking at people and situations with peripheral vision beyond the issue at hand.

Also, how is a ‘round no’ a powerful way to serve another person? How can we practice forgiveness by explicitly making space for ‘ugly conversations’? How can we use conflict to become even more connected with each other? Learn more about being and becoming a rooted & unwavering leader from this deep dialogue about connectedness.

Learn how foundational forgiveness is to being a connected leader.

Toni-Townes-Whitley-Rooted-and-UnwaveringToni Townes-Whitley is a global technology leader who currently serves as an Independent Director/Trustee on eight Boards: Nasdaq, PNC Financial Services, Empowerment Inclusion Capital, United Way Worldwide, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Partnership for Public Service, and the Princeton Faith & Work Initiative.

As former president of US Regulated Industries at Microsoft, Toni led the US sales strategy for driving digital transformation across customers and partners within the public sector and commercial regulated industries. With responsibility for the 5200+ sales organization and ~$16B P&L, she was one of the leading women at Microsoft, and in the technology industry, with a track record for accelerating and sustaining profitable business and building high-performance teams.

Her organization was responsible for executing on Microsoft’s industry strategy and go-to-market for both public sector and regulated industries in the United States, including Education, Financial Services, Government, and Healthcare. Prior to her U.S. role Toni led Microsoft’s global industry strategy for manufacturing, retail, media, and all regulated industries. In addition to leading a sales organization, she helped steer the company’s work to address systemic racial injustice – with efforts targeted both internally at representation and inclusion; as well as externally at leveraging technology to counter prevailing societal challenges. She has developed expertise and speaks publicly about “Civic Technology,” applying tech innovation for social impact.

Toni helped to launch new initiatives at Microsoft, building the ethics framework for Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, establishing the carbon-negative initiative, sponsoring Blacks & Africans at Microsoft (BAM), partnering with the Athena Alliance, an organization that prepares tech women for corporate board roles, and working with Gender Fair, an organization which rates companies on their gender-equity practices, policies, advertising and philanthropy.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Toni was president of CGI Federal, where she was responsible for a portfolio of more than $1 billion, leading 6,600 employees to deliver greater value to US Government civilian, defense, and intelligence sectors. Previously, Toni held several management roles at Unisys Corporation leading global and commercial-sector system integration and the Federal Civilian group, where she achieved 500 percent revenue growth and doubled profitability.

In addition to her board service, Toni has been a long-time advisor to and fundraiser for the Women’s Center of Northern Virginia, and a past president and Board Chair of Women in Technology. She is the recipient of numerous awards that include: Fortune’s Most Powerful Women: Ones to Watch, Women in Technology Leadership, Black Enterprise Top Executive, FedScoop Top50 for Industry Leadership, the 2020 IES Lifetime Achievement Award, and NVTC Tech 100 Executive. In 2020, she was awarded the prestigious Federal 100 Industry Eagle Award.

About Our Host

Hylke-Faber-headshotFor as long as he can remember Hylke Faber has been curious about what this life is about. His ongoing inquiry has become his work: helping people individually and collectively to discover what is possible in life and express that authentically and fearlessly.

Hylke started his work life with Towers Perrin as consultant and then as Partner with Strategic Decisions Group, serving a wide range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, consumer electronics and life sciences companies. A major shift occurred during this critical phase of his life. He had become the typical, hard-charging, 16-hours-a-day strategy consultant, and was burning out at a rapid clip.

When he discovered meditation, everything changed. He was so taken by his new discoveries that he chose to bring to business what he was learning: that there is a way we can have it all – we can be fulfilled, do work we love, and create extraordinary results with others. He thinks of it as creating a sense of ease in business.

He learned how to coach and facilitate human transformation completing his coaching certification with Newfield Network and by working at Axialent, the culture and leadership company. After a few years, he founded Co-Creation Partners together with other leaders in the field of transformation and personal development. Then he formed Constancee to help people grow by creating the conditions where deep personal, interpersonal and organizational shifts happen routinely.

He leads Growth Leaders Network, the culture and team development consultancy. He has also taught coaching at Columbia Business School Executive Education and has contributed to Harvard Business Review. He is currently teaching a course on Climate Conscious Leadership at Arizona State University. His award-winning book, Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader, was published by Dover in 2018.

His next book, Taming Your Crocodiles Practices for Leadership Depth, came out in 2020. Besides helping others grow, which he loves, he is a trained opera singer, enjoys hiking and writing, is an avid reader, in particular of biographies, and is always in the process of growing himself. He integrates all of what he learns in his work with executives.

Making-Up-For-Lost-Time-E108

Making Up For Lost Time E108

In this episode of Tycoons, Austin and Landon welcome back their 1st show guests, Josh and Joel Zolin, CEO and CFO of Windy City Equipment.

As former guests of Tycoons, Josh and Joel reflected on their father and son relationship and how it has impacted their relationship and the company.

Tune in to hear Josh and Joel talk about the importance of respect and authenticity and how these two characteristics have proved to be the reason for their strong bond as business partners and as father and son. WCELogoSteelHexagonNEWV02Glow

Windy City Equipment specializes in Commercial Facilities Maintenance such as HVAC, Refrigeration, and Cooking Equipment. Founded in 2003 by Joel Zolin, they have been serving the Phoenix area for 19 years.

Joel’s son, Josh, took over as CEO in 2017 and has since expanded the company footprint to Tucson, Houston, and Albuquerque. WCE also started a Youtube channel that offers how-to videos, podcasts, vlogs, and other industry-related information.

WCE has made the Inc 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in America the three years in a row, 2018, 2019, & 2020.

Josh-Zolin-Tycoons-of-Small-BizJosh Zolin came on with Windy City Equipment in 2008 as a service technician and worked his way through the ranks to eventually become CEO in 2017. His passion for the skilled trades spread through the company and enabled him to create a team of industry professionals that have exceeded the expectations of many.

Eventually, that passion manifested in the form of a book, Blue is the New White, which was published in May 2019. Josh has made it a personal mission to educate America’s youth on the opportunities that exist in the skilled trades in hopes of closing the skills gap, reducing student loan debt, and ultimately enabling the success of millions.

In addition to running WCE, Josh now speaks around the country to industry professionals and educational institutions about the trades. In the free time that he does have to spend, he enjoys the company of his wife and two daughters.

Joel-Zolin-Tycoons-of-Small-BizJoel Zolin started his career in equipment repair at Imperial Baking Co in Chicago, IL.

After years of working 80 hour weeks, he decided to take his talents elsewhere. So he went to HVAC/R school and decided to move to sunny Arizona.

From there he spent a few months with a local company before his entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and he decided to open the doors to Windy City Equipment.

From 2004 to 2008 he ran the business by himself, knocking on doors, and making connections. His front room was his office, and his garage was his shop. Little did he know that he was building the foundation for what would soon become one of the fastest growing companies in the US.

Strong Towns – Advocacy by Chuck Marohn E6

Charles Marohn, known as “Chuck” to friends and colleagues, is the founder and president of Strong Towns. He is a land use planner and (retired) professional engineer with decades of experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, both from the University of Minnesota.

Strong Towns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit media advocacy organization. They produce content that analyzes the failures of the post-war North American development pattern while giving citizens the knowledge and tools to start making our places better today.

They seek to replace America’s post-war pattern of development, the Suburban Experiment, with a pattern of development that is financially strong and resilient. They advocate for cities of all sizes to be safe, livable, and inviting. They work to elevate local government to be the highest level of collaboration for people working together in a place, not merely the lowest level in a hierarchy of governments.

Chuck offers an insightful look into the paradigm shift of development and how through education we can all become better stewards of the communities we work and live in.

Transferrable Skills E107

In this episode of Tycoons, John talks about his experience transitioning from a career in the Air Force, to getting his executive MBA, to acquiring a small business. The leadership training in the military gave him the confidence to get into a business he had no experience in. John knew how to hire the right people with the right experience and let them do their jobs while he provides the top-level guidance. John walks us through the process of buying a small family-owned business, the challenges he faced, and the opportunities he found to grow and scale the business.

As the new management of a business built entirely upon it’s reputation, John’s focus was ensuring the same quality of workmanship and keeping existing customers happy. He also implemented a process and tracking method to identify which types of projects were most profitable to gather data in understanding where and how to improve.

As a veteran, John understands the challenge of interpreting the skills learned in the military and transferring them to a civilian job. The most important skills are not obvious on a resume, but rather speak to the ethic, quality, and pride of the work. If you or someone you know is interested in millwork, reach out to John. He would love to give a tour and increase exposure to the millwork trade.

About The Messy Middle Podcast & Radio Show

The-Messy-Middle-logo“Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad but it’s the middle that counts the most.”- Hope Floats

We often talk about the beginnings and endings of things. We celebrate our firsts and mourn our lasts. We often ignore the in between, or what we like to call the messy middle. In this nebulous space, often there are no awards or recognition.

It is frequently characterized by the long days, hard work, uncertainty, self-doubt, small wins, setbacks, persistence, and sheer determination to simply keep moving forward. And, yet, it is also where the magic happens. The middle part of our journey is what shapes us, prepares us and fills our lives with meaning.

Welcome to the Messy Middle Podcast & Radio show! Each month we invite guests to share their own version of the Messy Middle and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Whether you’re in the messiness of growing a business, healing from trauma, or navigating the wild world of parenting; this show is for you! We’re so excited to celebrate the messiness of life and business with you!

Proptech’s Role in Innovating AZ’s Real Estate Market E26

Arizona’s business-friendly environment, weather and affordability have made it a hot spot for tourism and inbound migration for decades. But in a post-pandemic world where an estimated 269 people are moving to Arizona each day, the real estate market is experiencing an unexpected surge in demand that is affecting the availability of affordable inventory.

The May 2022 episode of the Arizona Technology Council’s AZTechCast podcast featured proptech experts including Ryan Egan, founder and CEO of Stackhouse; Bill Gleason, vice president of business development at ApostleTech; and Dusty Parsons, chief marketing officer at Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona. These leaders joined Karen Nowicki, president and owner of Phoenix Business RadioX, and Steve Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council, in exploring technology’s role in discussing the innovative technology solutions that are helping to stabilize Arizona’s housing market.

Throughout this hour-long episode, this panel of experts spoke about the pandemic’s unprecedented impact on the national and local real estate market. With the rise in remote work, workers were no longer tied to a physical office space and could disperse across the country, moving from urban metropolises like New York City and San Francisco to more affordable states more commonly known as “flyover states.”

This influx of new residents into Arizona, combined with the hesitancy to overbuild left over from the 2009-2010 recession, means that the state is still severely lagging in housing stock, particularly affordable housing stock. This shortage has inevitably pushed technologists and innovators into reimagining the real estate solutions that can help alleviate this social problem.

Stackhouse is a patent pending technology that allows you to take your container home with you no matter where you move.

Ryan-Egan-AZ-TechCastRyan Egan has been working in real estate since the age of 9 when his father started taking him to property showings. His first “real job” was filing for Larsen Baker. He worked for Bank of America but in 2008 he left banking and moved to the other side of the table negotiating short sales for his clients and other agents.

In 2009 he joined Heights properties, the real estate arm of Brake Masters. Starting in property management he quickly added site selection and construction management to his list of responsibilities.

In 2012 he was acquiring and repositioning non-performing assets in San Francisco when the idea for Stackhouse first came to him. Since starting the company in 2017 Stackhouse has been a first-place graduate of the UofA Forge incubator, and UACI.

In 2021 Stackhouse graduated from the Highly selective TechStars Anywhere program. He is currently scouting for property in Austin Texas with his solar-powered shipping container model home and his 3 Humane Society Specials.

Building Trust, Honesty and Cohesion – One Soul at a Time E22

We had a wonderful open conversation about culture, transparency, honesty, trust, and leadership. We knew this conversation would be powerful with Andrew Kolikoff and Christine Rogers.

Here is a bit of story that started off the conversation:

During the planning of this particular Culture Crush Business Podcast episode, there was a different team member from Aspireship that was supposed to be on the podcast as our guest. As we were approaching the show date, she informed our team that she was in the process of transitioning and leaving the company so it made sense to bring Christine on the show instead.

Our team wanted to make sure that this original guest was not leaving the company because of the culture and in reality we found out the complete opposite. Not only is that individual leaving the company on positive terms, but they are leaving with grace, transparency and the support of Christine, the company COO, and the rest of the team. This should be an example that we all live by. Now this story was not the entire conversation of the show, but it gives you a taste of where we started.

This podcast was not only full of stories, but it was full of examples. There are numerous examples in this podcast of ways that leaders can improve the culture, in baby steps, within their organizations.

What does that look like:

  • Be intentional.
  • Be human.
  • Own your mistakes.
  • Be transparent.
  • Power of pause. Pause and take a moment if you need it.
  • Think- how can you show up at that moment?
  • Build cohesion with your team.
  • Create space for your staff to be vulnerable.
  • Be curious.

Take a listen and hear the stories and examples that can help you improve your team culture, trust, and connection. As Andrew says, “It takes one soul at a time.”

While he brings with him his additional, wonderfully diverse experiences: 10+ years of not-for-profit board chairmanship, former chief science officer, university adjunct professor, and national director of business development,

Andrew’s true gift has always shown up in HOW he delivers the change and growth. As he says, before you can authentically create a culture of accountability, authenticity and scaled profitability… each leader first has to “see themselves for who they truly are and align themselves with themselves”.

About Culture Crush

Culture is not just a tag word to be thrown around. It is not something you throw in job descriptions to draw people to applying for jobs within a company.

According to Marcus Buckingham and Ashely Goodall in their book Nine Lies About Work, “Culture is the tenants of how we behave. It’s like a family creed. This is how we operate and treat each other in the family.”CultaureCrushKindraBanner2

As a growing company- Culture Crush Business Podcast is THE culture improvement resource that supports companies and leaders.  Our Mission is to improve company cultures so people WANT to go to work. Employees and leaders should like where they work and we think this is possible.

Within the company: Culture Crush has Vetted Resources and Partnerships with the right people and resources that can help improve your company culture.

On this podcast:  We focus on everything surrounding businesses with good company culture. We will talk with company leaders to learn about real-life experiences, tips, and best practices for creating a healthy work environment where employees are finding joy and satisfaction in their work while also striving and growing within the company.  We also find the companies that offer resources to help improve company culture and showcase them on the show to share their tips and tricks for growing culture.

About the Host

ABHOUTHOSTHEADSHOT

Kindra Maples  is spartan racer, past animal trainer, previous magician’s assistant, and has a weakness for Oreo cookie shakes. Her journey working with people actually started working with animals as a teenager (don’t worry we won’t go that far back for her bio).

She worked for over 15 years in the zoo industry working with animals and the public. Her passion of working with animals shifted into working with people in education, operations and leadership roles. From there her passion of leadership and helping people develop has continued to grow.

Then came the opportunity for leading  the Culture Crush Business Podcast and she jumped on it. Leadership, growth, and strong company cultures are all areas that Kindra is interested in diving into further.
