Max discusses how his firm differentiates itself from others by providing tax compliance services and also serving as a tax advisor. Improving Employment Outcomes E2

In this episode, host David Steinmetz and AIB President/CEO Chris LaFollette talked about the importance of recognizing the abilities of candidates who are blind or visually impaired, especially in a tight labor market.

Chris stated that Corporate America in partnership with nonprofit organizations can move the needle on the 70% unemployment rate among people who are blind or have other disabilities.

While small business and fortune 500 companies struggle to find qualified candidates to fill vacancies, they should look to the disability community. People who are blind or have other disabilities have diverse backgrounds, talents and abilities that help drive an organization forward.

How People, Planet and Profit Can All be Part of Your Business E19

Let’s be honest, we have been waiting to meet and record with this team for a while. It is one thing to be able to highlight companies around the world that have a great culture. It is different when we have the opportunity to highlight a company that we frequently visit. Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. is more than just a restaurant or brewing company.

They are a company with a passion to protect and conserve the great state of Arizona through growing a great culture that can help with that mission. We know that Jon and Pat will succeed in growing their company because of the purpose and the passion in what they are doing.

This conversation hit a few main areas that we were interested to dive into with this team; diversity and inclusion, passion for conservation, and the process of joining B corp. Pat and Jon’s journey through researching and joining B corp is what taught them more about diversity and inclusion and inevitably led them to searching for Johanna for the Head of People and Culture role. She hasn’t been with the team too long but has already brought her amazing background, education, and knowledge of diversity and people to the forefront of the company. Jon and Pat have always had a passion for focusing on people, but having Johanna in her role is really helping to put the processes and infrastructure in place to do so.

So what about B corp? It is very similar in some areas to Conscious Capitalism, which marks the step and repeat background in the studio. There is a focus on people, planet, and profit and how all areas can exist in the company evenly. They are still going through the process so we will look forward to hearing more about that journey for them in the future.

Then of course there is the conservation piece of it all, which we love. Their phrase “Drink like you care” is a reminder that the way they make beer—and the way people drink it—matters. One of their beers in particular, “This Beer Saves Water” is made using barley from Sinagua Malt. Every Arizona Wilderness beer uses Sinagua Malt as a base; This Beer Saves Water is made with 100% Sinagua. Since 2019, Sinagua’s efforts have kept more than 425 million gallons of water in the Verde River.

When we say we covered a lot of ground in this conversation- we mean it! Arizona-Wilderness-Brewing-Co-logo

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company is a craft brewery and restaurant created to reflect the beauty and biodiversity of Arizona.

Our mission is to produce socially, ethically, and environmentally responsible craft beer and food with the intention of inspiring and uplifting our local Arizona community.

We strive to enhance the lives of our guests, employees, and members of our community by creating unique, flavorful, and satisfying food and beer; providing legendary customer service; practicing solid business principles; participating in sustainable practices whenever possible; and treating our employees well.

Arizona Wilderness is a company born out of love for the great state of Arizona. AZW uses craft beer, inspired food fare, and community-driven atmosphere to act as a conduit between its consumer and the great outdoors.

AZW’s focus on sustainability, conservation, and community is what they believe to be the new way to operate a business in the new Arizona.

Johanna-Lortsher-Phoenix-Business-RadioXJohanna Lortsher is a certified (PHR) Human Resources professional with 17 year’s experience.

She has been with AZ Wilderness Brewing for 6 months, and prior to that spent 7 years as an HR consultant, the last 4 years as an HR Manager at a Professional Employment Organization where she helped companies of all sizes in all different industries with their HR issues large and small.

Now she is living her dream by combining her passions for employee culture, the outdoors, and craft beer.

Jonathan-Buford-Phoenix-Business-RadioXJonathan Buford is an avid backpacker and landscape photographer. Jonathan fell in love with the grandeur of Arizona when he moved here on 2002.

On a hike in 2010 he crossed the invisible boundary into one of the 90 protected wilderness areas of AZ, nature spoke to him. He knew his destiny would be to promote the protection and stewardship of the state he calls home.

Patrick-Ware-Phoenix-Business-RadioXPatrick Ware was already 5 years into his journey as a craft brewer when he began dreaming of opening his own brewery.

He had developed the skills of a professional brewer and just needed a business plan to make his dream happen. Turns out, that isn’t that easy to do when you’re brewing all of the time!

Once he met Jonathan, and they had shared a few beers together of course, it made sense to combine their skills and passion into one, bold dream.

They went on a hike to that very sign that started the ideas and dream that Jonathan had, and the name Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. was born.

Before joining CFA, Melanie worked at Arizona State University on two U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) five-year education grants; a Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) project titled Ready-for-Rigor and a Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) project titled iTeachELLs.

Melanie began as an administrative assistant on the Ready-for-Rigor project and on the most recent project, iTeachELLs held the role of Business Analyst. On both projects she led the project team and community partners through the application of improvement science, monitoring, measuring and assessing change in teacher classroom practices and communicating the broader social impact of grants to community stakeholders.

At the heart of each project was cultivating a shared purpose by curating a set of experiences and connections around three main skillsets: building relationships, project evaluation, and managing the human side of change.

How to Overcome, Find Your Path and Build Your Community E2

On this episode of The Messy Middle, Kelly Kussman, CEO & Founder of Cayla Gray Candles, and Rachel Tarman, Business Development Executive of VIP Mortgage bring us along as we travel through their path to success.

Both women share their unique story of heartbreak, how they overcame obstacles and defined their own path on their own terms. We talk about the power of community and connection and how to find “your people” in this post-covid world.

If you are trying to find your own path and purpose this is a great episode! Kelly and Rachel share tips on how to find your community even when it is not right in front of you. Join us for a few laughs as we reminisce on business date missteps and support each other in vulnerable moments as we describe the challenges we have each faced.

You will be sure to walk away with pages of notes and ideas on how to triumph despite the tragedies in your own life.

Get ready to be inspired!

Cayla Gray is a luxury line of clean fragrances. We have cleanly formulated perfumes and candles in four core scents as well as quarterly limited-edition scent releases.

In 2017, owner Kelly Kussman suffered from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, losing her first baby and almost losing her own life. She realized after this tragedy that life is short and not guaranteed, and decided it was time to start her dream business. Cayla-Gray-logo-primary-black

In 2020, she launched a fragrance company and named it Cayla Gray, to honor the name of her first baby.

“I am so fascinated with how deeply personal fragrance is to an individual not only in its ability to evoke emotion but also to encourage a tangible connection to past experiences; the connection between scent and memory is so strong! How many times have you smelled something that transports you back to a moment in time? I wanted to bottle that feeling and build a brand that harnesses these memories so people are wearing more than a perfume – they’re really feeling something. So often we move through life without even noticing the beauty around us. I wanted to create products that caused a moment of pause for us.” -Kelly Kussman

Kelly-Kussman-Phoenix-Business-RadioXKelly Kussman has 18 years of experience leading large teams in corporate retail, but always had a passion for fragrance and decided to set out on her own to start Cayla Gray.

She took her decades of experience and launched her direct to consumer brand in 2020, all during the pandemic.

About The Messy Middle Podcast & Radio Show

The-Messy-Middle-logo“Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad but it’s the middle that counts the most.”- Hope Floats

We often talk about the beginnings and endings of things. We celebrate our firsts and mourn our lasts. We often ignore the in between, or what we like to call the messy middle. In this nebulous space, often there are no awards or recognition.

It is frequently characterized by the long days, hard work, uncertainty, self-doubt, small wins, setbacks, persistence, and sheer determination to simply keep moving forward. And, yet, it is also where the magic happens. The middle part of our journey is what shapes us, prepares us and fills our lives with meaning.

Welcome to the Messy Middle Podcast & Radio show! Each month we invite guests to share their own version of the Messy Middle and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Whether you’re in the messiness of growing a business, healing from trauma, or navigating the wild world of parenting; this show is for you! We’re so excited to celebrate the messiness of life and business with you!

E96 Finding Passion in Your Work with Louise Gardner

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Louise Gardner and PMO Joe discussed the PMO space and how to push the start button, entrepreneurship, strategies that have helped resolve organizational resistance to new PMOs and much more.

Passion goes a long way when you’re thinking about starting your own business. Louise shared how starting her own company has made her feel that she has a purpose. “I dance to work every day. I’m having an awesome time and I’ve never quite felt like that. There’s lots of positive things to be said about corporate life, but I’m having more fun than I’ve ever had right now.”

Louise started her PMO career as a Project Controller in the Water industry in the late 90’s. Working with topflight engineering companies on large projects, she developed a passion for supporting project teams and creating transparency around project data. After moving to Sydney, Australia in 2004, Louise continued to work with Utilities across water, power, and transport before establishing Pledge Consulting in 2012.

“PMO is such a people centric Department team. It’s about giving people a level of comfort that you are there to support them on the journey. And these things that they think can’t be done shouldn’t be done. Let’s just deal with them one step at a time. Evolution, not revolution, is one of my favorite things” -Louise

Driven by passion for creating efficiency, quality and an overarching desire to help organizations get more value from their project controls and project delivery teams. Pledge Consulting’s mission is ‘To help organizations deliver value by doing projects better’.
