Flexibilty – Catholic Education Arizona and Fasturtle E9

This was a very special episode for our Culture Crush Podcast team. Our sponsor, Catholic Education Arizona, was on the show! Not only is Catholic Education Arizona a great sponsor, but they are also a company building a great company culture.

Nancy Padberg has been an amazing leader and advocate for building a great company culture. Nancy had the opportunity to invite a guest on the show with her that is leading a company with a great company culture, and Eric Olsen with Fasturtle Digital Marketing was her choice. What a great choice it was too!

The energy with Nancy, Eric, and the Culture Crush host, Kindra Maples, was so dynamic and fluid that the hour flew by. This conversation dove into a variety of different angles of company culture including what culture is and what it is not. The trio discusses the need to grow positive company culture in all teams, the importance of values that align the team, and remembering that company culture not just having a foosball table in the office.

This episode is a great one to listen to if you are a company leader that thinks you have a great company culture. This episode will help you double check the culture that you are growing and help you ask yourself if your employees think you have a good culture or if you are just handing out free snacks and have fun games in the office for the team. If you are not the company leader, this is a great podcast to listen to in order to help understand what good company culture really is and if you have it with the company that you are currently working.

Thank you again to our sponsor Catholic Education Arizona, for being a great sponsor, as well as a company with a great company culture!

For 23 years Catholic Education Arizona has helped serve underserved children with $268 million in scholarships. Catholic High Schools have a 99.4% graduation rate and 97% move on to higher education or military service.

About Culture Crush

Culture Crush is officially relaunched! We are thankful to Debra Caron who launched and hosted the show originally. Culture Crush is back with a new host but the same focus- highlighting what makes a great company culture and how it affects the overall success of a company.CultaureCrushKindraBanner2

Culture is not just a tag word to be thrown around. It is not something you throw in job descriptions to draw people to applying for jobs within a company.

According to Marcus Buckingham and Ashely Goodall in their book Nine Lies About Work, “Culture is the tenants of how we behave. It’s like a family creed. This is how we operate and treat each other in the family.”

On this long form podcast we will highlight companies local to Arizona and beyond that are crushing it with great culture!

We will talk with company leaders to learn about real-life experiences, tips, and best practices for creating a healthy work environment where employees are finding joy and satisfaction in their work while also striving and growing within the company.

About the Host

ABHOUTHOSTHEADSHOTKindra Maples is your new host taking the lead on the relaunch of Culture Crush! She is spartan racer, past animal trainer, previous magician’s assistant, and has a weakness for Oreo cookie shakes. Her journey working with people actually started working with animals as a teenager (don’t worry we won’t go that far back for her bio).

She worked for over 15 years in the zoo industry working with animals and the public. Her passion of working with animals shifted into working with people in education, operations and leadership roles. From there her passion of leadership and helping people develop has continued to grow.

Then came the opportunity for relaunching the Culture Crush Podcast and she jumped on it. Leadership, growth, and strong company cultures are all areas that Kindra is interested in diving into further.

Shout Outs

We want to thank a few people for their behind the scenes effort in helping this relaunch to come to life. James Johnson with Tailored Penguin Media Company LLC.– It is a small, but powerful video production company with a goal to deliver the very best by articulating the vision of your brand in a visually creative way. Gordon Murray with Flash PhotoVideo, LLC. -Flash Gordon has been photographing since high school and evolving since then with new products that will equip, encourage, engage, and enable. Renee Blundon with Renee Blundon Design – She is not only one of the best free divers (that’s not how she helped with the podcast) but she is great with graphics design and taking the direction for the vision that you have while also adding creative ideas to bring to your vision to life.

These are just a few of the folks that supported the relaunch of the podcast. If you would like to be part of the Culture Crush team or would like to support underwriting the show- please reach out: culturecrushpodcast@gmail.com

Growing Culture Through Music – Brian Mohr E9

When it comes to finding the right guests to bring on to the People and Profit Podcast, our team always has our eyes open for great company leaders that align with Conscious Capitalism and the four tenants. This month we did not have to look very far to find a well-known leader in the Conscious Capitalism network here within the Arizona community as well as the Conscious Capitalism International Team.

Brian Mohr jumped on the Conscious Capitalism bandwagon back before 2015 when he found “his people.” As many others, Brian stumbled upon the Conscious Capitalism movement and knew he had to be part of the tribe. He has been on the board for Conscious Capitalism International and currently sits on the board locally for the Arizona Chapter as well. Not only has he been part of Conscious Capitalism in that facet but also in his past and present company leadership roles that he has held. From growing the very culture focused company Y-scouts, to his new and very culture focused company anthym.

anthym is an interactive, personal storytelling platform leveraging the power of music to catalog some of the most meaningful and pivotal moments and memories in our lives.

It’s becoming clear that the future of work will be embracing an increase in work-from-anywhere and remote work scenarios, which presents a whole new set of challenges for teams and companies. anthym is focusing on bringing the team members together and allowing them to connect on a deeper level. We know WHAT people do but this program allows the team members to truly learn about WHO the people are that they work with.

This podcast dives into the tenant of company culture, why it is important, the need to improve it, and how anthym can improve it. This is a great podcast to listen to if you have read about conscious capitalism and you think that these people align with you. Listen in to fund your tribe just like Brian did.

Building cohesive remote teams and culture is incredibly difficult – anthym is here to make it easier. At its core, anthym is a personal storytelling platform that helps you reflect on and catalog  some of your most meaningful and important life moments by leveraging the power of cultural touchstones like music, movies, books, and TV shows, which results in your personal anthym profile.

Together with your teammates, the anthym experience is brought to life by a facilitated virtual onboarding where you and your teammates share stories with one another and create powerful, authentic connections. After the onboarding experience, the anthym platform allows for continuous team connection and helps promote connection, inclusion, belonging and trust.

Brian-Mohr-anthymBrian Mohr’s career is a learning-based journey with an intense focus on people, purpose, values, culture, and leadership. Brian has had amazing entrepreneurial and leadership experiences at Jobing.com, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Y Scouts and Conscious Capitalism Arizona. Today, Brian is channeling his experiences and energy into helping organizations build cohesive teams in the rapidly accelerating virtual workplace through his new company, Anthym.

Brian is on the national Board of Directors of Conscious Capitalism, Inc., he is a Board member and President Emeritus of the Arizona Chapter of Conscious Capitalism, a member of the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of the Pacific Southwest, a TEDx speaker, and the co-author of “Hiring on Purpose – How the Y Scouts Method is Revolutionizing the Search for Leaders”.

Brian’s most important and cherished responsibilities are being the lucky father to his 2 daughters, Taylor and Riley, and the proud husband to his wife, Jackie. In his spare time, you’ll find Brian practicing guitar and catching a live music concert every chance he can get.

Freedom and Collaboration – Support for CEOs to Grow and Lead Great Companies E8

The Culture Crush Business Podcast team wants to make sure that we are always sharing great companies with our audience. We want to make sure that we are highlighting companies that are crushing it with a great company culture but there is more to it all then that. We want to make sure we are also proving our listeners with the best resources out there to help with building a great company culture. A great company culture starts at the top. The CEO is the individual that the team looks up to and follows. This puts a lot of pressure on that individual to show strength in leading the team in the right direction. It is important to see the leader as more than that. They are humans too; learning to balance work, family, teams, budgets, emotions, and more.

Our two guests are two amazing resources that help support the CEO’s in order to give them the tools and support they need to grow their teams and their companies.

Andy Maurer, Emotional Wellness Coach
Tom Goodman, Vistage CEO Chair

New research around neuroscience and leadership shows that there is a large disconnect between logic and emotion that greatly limits a leader’s capacity to perform at optimum levels in their life, work, and relationships. Leaders rarely have a place to safely and confidentially process and make sense of their inner struggles. As an emotional wellness coach, and a former licensed therapist specializing in leadership, Andy has created a space for them to show up and reclaim their humanity and true identity.

Although you might have heard of Vistage before, Tom is one of the best Vistage Chair’s out there. Vistage is the world’s largest CEO executive coaching and peer advisory board organization, with over 24,000 members worldwide. Executives join Vistage groups to connect with other high-performing presidents & CEOs to help them become better leaders and accelerate their company’s growth and profitability.

Who should listen?
This episode is a great episode for everyone to listen to but the focus is definitely on support for CEOs. Do you know a CEO that you would like to support and provide some resources to? Are you the CEO of a company and you are needing support from other CEOs that you can connect with? Are you a CEO that is looking for personal support that allows you a safe space to help dive into some inner struggles? Or if you are a CEO that thinks you are doing “fine” leading your company, you should listen to this episode.

Thank you to Catholic Education Arizona for sponsoring this episode!

Vistage-Logo-Color

Vistage is the world’s largest CEO executive coaching and peer advisory board organization, with over 24,000 members worldwide. Executives join Vistage groups to connect with other high-performing presidents & CEOs to help them become better leaders and accelerate their company’s growth and profitability.
Vistage members do three things differently compared with other CEOs and business leaders:

  1. They step away from their day-to-day duties on a regular basis to think about and focus on their business, rather than work in their business. They get out of the weeds and are able to focus on strategy.
  2. They connect with other leaders in like roles and share learnings to help each other make important, more informed decisions. They become better decision-makers and are more confident in the decisions they make.
  3. They are constantly looking for outside perspectives for new and innovative ideas to bring into their businesses.

Vistage peer advisory boards work: a D&B study showed that Vistage member companies grew on average 2.2x faster than did other similarly-sized companies.

Tom-GoodmanheadshotBefore becoming a Vistage CEO Chair, Tom Goodman founded and led two technology companies that spearheaded commercialization and business development for clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies; frequently he embedded with the clients’ executive teams to develop and implement successful growth strategies for business, technology and manufacturing.

Prior to focusing on his passion for developing executives and their businesses, Goodman performed in a wide range of roles from R&D, product & process engineering and manufacturing, to sales & marketing and management. He was worked extensively developing international businesses and markets, particularly in Asia.

Goodman holds Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in science and engineering. His fields of specialty include business consulting, international business, product development, strategic development and technology.

Andy-Maurer-HeadshotAndy Maurer is a keynote speaker and an emotional wellness coach for high level leaders in business and entertainment. In addition, he has a background as a licensed therapist specializing in leadership and trauma. He works with high performance leaders, including CEO’s, founders, entrepreneurs, and influencers, educating and equipping them on the issue of toxic stress, and trauma and its impact on their work and relationships. After years of working with leaders, he has come to believe that any leader can change the world, but only whole and emotionally healthy leaders can change the world for the better.

He has worked with numerous leadership groups including YPO, EO, Vistage, Marketplace One, and Renaissance Executive Forums–building out curriculum, facilitating trainings and live experiences, and consulting around the issue of emotional health and leadership.

He earned both a Masters of Divinity in Professional Counseling from Phoenix Seminary and a Masters in Marital Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Then came the opportunity for relaunching the Culture Crush Podcast and she jumped on it. Leadership, growth, and strong company cultures are all areas that Kindra is interested in diving into further.

Their Story is Our Story E50

The Tycoons break the normal mold for this show and interview Sherianne and Robin of the non-profit organization, Their Story is Our Story. This is a great show highlighting the passion for volunteerism and the framework for purposeful living.

Sherianne and Robin give an inspiring picture of real refugee stories and the contributions they provide to our society. It’s a story that’s worth listening to to understand that refugees can be a real asset to our community. They are ready to work and innovative. They are entrepreneurs that create jobs, new products, pay taxes, and have a spending capacity that pays back into the economy.

The refugee stories have to change something in the way we welcome them so that we’ll benefit from that societal dividend. The purpose of the stories is to teach us to be better.

TSOS (Their Story Is Our Story) shares stories of the refugee journey and experience to advocate and educate, and to actuate integration. Through stories the TSOS teams aim to transform the perception and reception of refugees worldwide; one story at a time. TheirStoryisOurStoryBadgeWordmark

The right kind of stories educate and inform. They embolden advocacy and generate meaningful change. Collaborative, interpersonal relationships are the seedbed for individual and communal progress. Ultimately, TSOS envisions a world where there is no “them,” only us.

TSOS gathers and shares stories that inform, edify, and spur a desire toward individual engagement with and advocacy for refugees in individual communities, and perhaps even across the global landscape. TSOS presents these stories to be explored and studied that readers might discover human commonalities: that all stories no matter how varied, cohere in one human story. There is no them, only us. Their story is our story.

Sherianne-Schow-Tycoons-of-Small-BizAfter having lived in several US cities, Sherianne Schow currently lives in Montana. Her interest in equal opportunities for newcomers fueled her studies in Linguistic and Education. She holds a BA in English and French and an MA in French Studies and Linguistics. Her friendships with refugee populations began while teaching in Luxembourg. Having understood the profound and positive influence of these friends, she has made similar connections wherever she has lived.

Prior to her work with TSOS (Their Story Is Our Story), Sherianne helped found and served as the president of L3 – Love, Literacy, Life. She works regularly with various international medical foundations, focusing primarily on helping refugees. Her service experiences have been foundational in building her passion to promote communities of diversity and inclusion. Sherianne and her husband have six children, and she enjoys volunteering at her local school library, working with childhood literacy and serving on the local school board.

Robin-Peterson-Tycoons-of-Small-BizRobin Peterson lives in Arizona with her husband and children. Her passion for storytelling stems from her deep love of history. While attending Brigham Young University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History, she had the opportunity to intern at the National Archives in Washington, DC. Professionally, storytelling plays a large role for Robin as she provides deep rooted family connections through her work as a professional genealogist, researching for shows such as Who Do You Think You Are.

The importance of telling and preserving individual stories led her to join Their Story Is Our Story in 2019 to serve as the Director of Archives. In November 2019 she accompanied several team members on her first story gathering trip to the Northwest. Robin also spends time volunteering with various refugee organizations in the Phoenix area.

In her free time, Robin enjoys hiking, trail running, paddleboarding and weightlifting.

E77 Zen and the Art of Strategic Alignment with Stuart Easton

Are you working on the proper projects within your organization? Why do we even do projects in an organization? So much time in Project Management is spent trying to improve project execution and not as much on project selection and strategic alignment. In this episode we take a deep dive on Strategic Alignment and Portfolio Management with Stuart Easton CEO of Transparent Choice.

Stuart and PMO Joe share several anecdotes from their experiences which highlight the importance of understanding the value and purpose for project selection and strategic alignment. It doesn’t work to try to do every project. We do projects to achieve our business goals. The art of strategic alignment is to get the leadership team to own the decision making process and to agree on the overall business goals and portfolio priority.

Stuart provides several tools and techniques to help us improve our ability to prioritize strategic portfolios. One technique used within the Transparent Choice solution is AHP, Analytic Hierarchy Process. The process helps you define and quantify the value you are going to deliver to the organization. Our Mission

We help local business leaders get the word out about the important work they’re doing to serve their market, their community, and their profession.

We support and celebrate business by sharing positive business stories that traditional media ignores. Some media leans left. Some media leans right. We lean business.
