Kimberly-Mitchel-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAs a young adult at the age of 25, Kimberly Mitchell was very blessed that all four of her grandparents and one great-grandmother were still alive.

She was close to all five of them and it was very emotional for her to watch their health decline the last few years of their lives as they received very poor care from untrained caregivers.

Kimberly’s great-grandmother, Dorothy, was an incredible woman and lived to be 103 years old. When her family couldn’t take care of her anymore, they chose to place her in a nursing home facility where she was, unfortunately, miserable. She declined because she was so unhappy.

If she knew then what she knows now about home care, her family could have made her last years more comfortable and happy at home.

Later, her grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. His wife, an untrained caregiver, was not the greatest about getting him his meds and prepping decent meals, etc. Within a few years, her other grandfather was diagnosed with emphysema.

Witnessing these situations set Kimberly on a mission to advocate for our older generation and become a part of the solution.

At the age of 11, he was selling jewelry at his family’s jewelry store inside one of the busiest malls in southeastern Michigan.

Listen in as members of the Executive Leadership Team share what’s new with the Phoenix Zoo. As with countless other organizations and businesses, the Phoenix Zoo has had to be quick on their feet and find creative ways to keep our community engaged during the covid pandemic; and, they’ve done that masterfully! 

It was difficult decision to close the Zoo in the spring which is during the best of their revenue generating months. The affects on personnel hit hard with cutbacks in all areas; and yet, still having the vital need for full operation and top-notch animal care.  The Zoo staff’s ability to adapt to changing priorities – being nimble and looking for new ways for the Zoo to be sustainable is impressive! Thank you for being such an important part of Arizona and global conservation. 

The Arizona Center for Nature Conservation (ACNC) operates the Phoenix Zoo. The ACNC advances the stewardship and conservation of animals and their habitats while providing experiences that inspire people and motivate them to care for the natural world. The Phoenix Zoo opened in 1962 and is the most visited cultural institution in Arizona.

The Phoenix Zoo is the only zoo in the Valley accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a non-profit zoological park, serving 1.4 million guests annually. The Zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals, many of which are endangered and threatened species. Bert-Castro-Phoenix-ZooBert Castro is the President and CEO of the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, which operates the Phoenix Zoo. He began his professional career in 1985 as a volunteer and then, later that year, as a Keeper at the Tulsa Zoo. He then served as Assistant Curator of the Asian Domain at the Audubon Zoo, Curator of Birds and Mammals at Zoo Atlanta, General Curator at the San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium and Executive Director/CEO of the Oklahoma City Zoological Park and Botanical Garden.

Castro has an Associate’s degree in Natural Science, a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies.

Castro has been a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1985 and has served on the Diversity Committee, Ethics Committee, and was Chairman of both the Government Affairs and the Wildlife Conservation and Management Committee. He is currently serving a second term on the AZA Board of Directors, having previously served on the Board from 2009 – 2011. He has been a member of the Zoo Conservation Outreach Board, serving as Chairman in 2006 and 2007. He served on the Board of the Foothills Community Foundation from 2012 – 2017, serving as Chairman from 2015 – 2017. He was appointed by President Obama to seve on the Institute of Musuem and Library Services Advisory Board and served from 2012 – 2017.

TCC brings together the community – including government, nonprofits, faith groups and residents – to support Tempeans in need, plan for present and future needs, and build an enduring foundation.

Octavia has worked in the nonprofit sector for the past 10 years and her experience includes leadership, program management, fundraising, grant management, volunteer coordination and community engagement at non-profits in Alaska, Washington State and Hawaii.

Octavia is a proud AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps Alumni. She holds both Masters in Public Administration and Political Science and is a Certified Non-profit Professional. Octavia is delighted to join the Tempe Community Council in a role that engages and supports the Tempe community.

After dedicating 25 yrs of her career in community relations, HR management, thought leadership, biz development, and volunteer arenas, Julie decided to branch out and work with others to develop their skills and to bring their business goals to life when she founded Paradigm Promoters.

Currently, Julie shares her creative touch on the brand management and digital footprint scene by building unique campaigns for her clients. Focusing on their passion, story, digital stamp, and vision she ensures they understand the importance of creating their legacy. Most importantly she teams up with them to identify their connections and current trends to explore new business opportunities.

Julie proudly served as the 2013 AZSHRM State Conference Director, and was the 2012 AZSHRM State Conference co-Chair. Other community initiatives include PWC Youth Council, Fresh Start for Women, and the Junior Achievement Women’s Golf Classic committee, JA ‘You’re Hired’ board and as a volunteer/sponsor.

In 2011, she was a featured chapter in the book, Shattering Barriers: Amazing Women’s Journeys to Personal Empowerment written by Dolores Seright. She received her BA in Org Comm from Wright State University, and she is a Master Graduate of Rapport Leadership International.
