Susie Brown tells us that her parents called her a “late bloomer”. Originally from Mississippi, she didn’t start her college career until she was 30. After earning a degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, she went on to Wichita State University, earning a graduate degree in Healthcare Administration. This was just the first of many moves! Initially, she went back to Mississippi to work with a small United Way organization. From there, she went on to Kankakee, Illinois, Utica, New York, Somerville, New Jersey, then to Tennessee then to New York City. After spending 20 years with the United Way, she then took a job with the Urban League in New York. Whew!
More recently, Susie felt compelled to come to Atlanta to help her sister care for their mother, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She had tried to fly down to Atlanta a number of times for interviews, but always seemed to lose out to the “local candidate”. It was at that point that Susie decided to become the “local candidate”, and moved here. In June, 2011, she took on the role of Executive Director of the Star NeuroScience Foundation. This organization is the brainchild of Dr. Marshall Nash, of NeuroStudies.net. His vision was to create an organization that would help raise awareness of the value of clinical research as part of a physician’s regular practice. Why? Because the more physicians that incorporate clinical research, and the more patients that participate in the studies, the quicker some of the new drugs can make it to the market and benefit those who so desperately need it. Susie notes that it can take up to 15 years, and $1 billion to bring a drug to market. NSF’s goal is to try to help reduce both the time and cost to put these new drugs in the hands of patients.
