The Future of Community with Lava Sunder E29
On this episode of The Future of Work, we explore what the future of community looks like with our guest, Lava Sunder from Culdesac. Lava shares with us the details of the new car-less, people centered community being built right here in Tempe. Culdesac is creating a community where people build connection to their physical space and neighbors in a whole new way. The community will include an onsite grocery store and coworking space allowing people to have fast and efficient access to a place to work and fill their fridges.
This is a great episode if you are re-imagining what your life post pandemic looks like. If you are curious about the ways that Tempe is attracting innovative companies and communities, join us! Hear some great insight from Lava as she describes what community means to Culdesac and how they are pushing the car-free movement forward. An Arizona lifestyle doesn’t have to mean a tract home in ‘burbs. Oh and also, if you are currently living the car-free lifestyle, Lava explains how to get yourself a cool FREE sticker.
Culdesac is the world’s first post-car real-estate developer, and they are building the country’s first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in Tempe, AZ.
Culdesac Tempe is a 1,000 person car-free community – residents will get around via bike, scooter, light rail, and ride share, and have access to a bundle of retail amenities, including a grocery store, coffee shop and coworking space. Culdesac’s goal is to build the first car-free city in America.
Lava Sunder is the General Manager of Culdesac Tempe – the nation’s first car-free neighborhood built from scratch and Culdesac’s first project. Lava oversees the marketing and leasing of the project, as well as partnerships, site design and operations.
Lava was born and raised in Houston, and currently lives car-free in Tempe.

ABOUT YOUR CO-HOSTS
With a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.
Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6. Day to day, his main operational role is on the “spaces” side of the business, focusing on creating thriving communities in the commercial office buildings, the co-working space, and the co-manufacturing space. The other role that he plays is that of EOS implementer, working with clients to bring the Entrepreneurial Operating System, from the book Traction® to their businesses. Additionally, he sits on the boards of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona, and The Tempe Chamber of Commerce, sustaining Tempe’s quality of life and keeping our community and economy vibrant.
Kyle loves Arizona and wants to see us all collectively find great success based on the awesome things that are happening here every day.
