The Barrow County Economic Development Authority is responsible for the recruitment of new industries and existing industry expansions; manages the local development authorities and the incentive process; responds to state and site selector requests for information (RFI); promotes the county’s 270 acre industrial park, known as Park 53, as well as many other industrial sites within the county.

The department also promotes the county to investors, developers, brokers and construction firms; works closely with the Barrow Chamber of Commerce, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Economic Developers Association, the Southern Association of Economic Development, the International Economic Development Council, the Georgia Innovation Crescent Regional Board, the Innovation Corridor Joint Development Authority, and the Northeast Georgia Joint Development Authority.

The department also promotes the County through newsletters and various social media platforms to economic development stakeholders; and serves on the Chamber Workforce Development Committee, Adult Literacy Barrow and the Employ Barrow Coalition.

Thun’s Buns & Jams is owned and managed by former chef, Travis Thun. Born and raised in Southern California, and relocated to Georgia in his childhood- Travis found his passion for cooking along the journey in his early professional career as a sous chef in prestige kitchens. After 10 years in the grueling industry, he began dreaming of another outlet for his creativity and passion in culinary arts. Ironically enough, one of his favorite quick snacks are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The aha-moment came to life after being disappointed by the additives and questionable ingredients and freshness of grocery store jellies and jams. So began the process of bringing Thuns Buns and Jams to life.

After months of developing unique recipes for jams and baked goods, Travis established his business in 2019 and went out with a bang. Despite the 2020 pandemic slowing business down, Travis took the additional time to continue developing new jams, pickled goods, candies.. and buns! To this day, all the goods made with care by Travis are done at the Thuns’ home kitchen and sold across Georgia in farmers markets, fairs, and festivals. Alongside Travis is his partner-in-crime, Audrey, who helps prepare and pack jams, manages the social channels, and attends all fairs and events with Travis to share the love of Thuns Buns and Jams.

The Empower College & Career Center (EmpowerC3) is an educational partnership with businesses in Jackson County and the surrounding area. The Empower Center engages students in career relevant learning experiences. Through partnerships with business and industry, higher education and our community, students work toward goals that help them reach their college and career objectives. Some of these goals include completing pathways and earning credentials.

EmpowerC3 provides a variety of high-tech and academic opportunities as part of the high school experience. Students can work toward associate’s degrees through the University System of Georgia or the Technical College System of Georgia while earning their high school diplomas, qualifying them immediately for a variety of professional careers and post-secondary opportunities. Parents of students participating in dual enrollment will save up to two years of post-secondary tuition.

Students will leave high school with authentic experiences that will help them define and refine their choices about college, careers, or the military. EmpowerC3 will provide a continuum of work-based learning experiences, internship possibilities, and a pervasive use of science, math, technology and engineering within the classroom curriculum.

The ultimate goal for every EmpowerC3 student is to graduate prepared for a successful career in an ever-changing world. Established high school programs and dual-enrollment programs offered through partnerships with the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College will allow EmpowerC3 to provide high-demand skills for high school students and adults from Jackson County and the surrounding areas. Empower College and Career Center will provide post-baccalaureate opportunities for individuals seeking new skills or a career change after earning a college degree. Students will engage in authentic, integrated, work-based, and service-learning experiences that simulate the professional environment.
