E77 Zen and the Art of Strategic Alignment with Stuart Easton

Are you working on the proper projects within your organization? Why do we even do projects in an organization? So much time in Project Management is spent trying to improve project execution and not as much on project selection and strategic alignment. In this episode we take a deep dive on Strategic Alignment and Portfolio Management with Stuart Easton CEO of Transparent Choice.

Stuart and PMO Joe share several anecdotes from their experiences which highlight the importance of understanding the value and purpose for project selection and strategic alignment. It doesn’t work to try to do every project. We do projects to achieve our business goals. The art of strategic alignment is to get the leadership team to own the decision making process and to agree on the overall business goals and portfolio priority.

Stuart provides several tools and techniques to help us improve our ability to prioritize strategic portfolios. One technique used within the Transparent Choice solution is AHP, Analytic Hierarchy Process. The process helps you define and quantify the value you are going to deliver to the organization. ABOUT PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE HOURS SERIES

Project Management Office Hours is intended to provide Project Management professionals a place to drop in and discuss Success Stories, Best Practices, and Lessons Learned.  Project Management Consultant Joy Gumz has shared with us, “Operations keep the lights on, strategy provides the light at the end of the tunnel, but project management is the train engine that moves the organization forward.”

Each of us has a unique story to tell, but collectively we share a message that organizations who embrace Project Management Best Practices perform better than those which don’t.  Organizations which align Projects to Strategy perform better.  Organizations with Engage Executive Sponsors deliver better results.  Organizations which measure Project Management performance outperform those which don’t.

During our Project Management Office Hours, we hear directly from Industry leaders how to make an impact in our profession. How we, collectively, will Advance Project Management Best Practices, One Listener at a time!

E54 Adding PMO Value with Strategic Intent and Portfolio Alignment

Is your PMO adding value to the organization? How do you know? In this episode we have a fun and informative discussion with Stuart Easton Co-founder of TransparentChoice. We chat about Project Prioritization, Project Success rates, Investment in People, interesting facts about Lord Byron, Stuart’s niece’s artwork, and we hear a bit about Stuart’s career in the US and UK.

Stuart joined us from Cambridge in the UK and hit on some great points. One example to consider, our teams can be great at project execution but if we aren’t working the correct projects are we truly adding value to the organization? Do we have Strategic Intent with our portfolio? Are our projects supporting the strategic interests of the organization?

How many of you have 5, 6, 10, or more #1 priorities within your portfolio? Are you truly examining the projects to evaluate importance and impact on the business? Are you having challenges with Resource Management? Perhaps the challenge isn’t not enough resource rather there is a lack of focus on which projects which will add value.

Thanks to our sponsor THE PMO SQUAD. Visit www.thepmosquad.com to learn to Empower People to Deliver Results and assist your PMO as you evolve in the new post-COVID business world.

TransparentChoice is a world-leading provider of project prioritization and decision-making software. Based in the UK, our customers span the globe, mostly large enterprise, government or non-profits.

Stuart-Easton-on-Project-Management-Office-HoursStuart Easton is the CEO and co-founder of TransparentChoice. He writes a blog (mostly) about project prioritization and portfolio management. He is also guest lecture on the University of Oxford’s Masters in Major Programme Management. Having trained as a physicist, Stuart likes data and research and everything in his talk is based on research. This makes his content a little “different” to the typical “self-appointed YouTube expert”.

Stuart’s belief that “doing right” is more important than short-term profit recently lead to the tough decision to offer TransparentChoice’s software for free during the Covid 19 crisis. This is a brave attempt to reduce the economic and social impact of this pestilential disease.
