Emilie Christie opened her company which specializes in making cakes, cupcakes, pizza and doughnuts for people with severe food allergies. For those with these allergies, even smelling the offending ingredient can send an allergic person to the hospital in anaphylactic shock, a life threatening condition.

The main allergies are to Wheat/Gluten, Eggs, Dairy, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Soy, Fish and Shellfish. As one might imagine, she found that there was little available that a child or adult could eat in the prime food groups like pizza and doughnuts much less cupcakes and cakes as they use these ingredients extensively. Deserts and tasty stuff the non allergic take for granted were simply not available and what was available didn’t taste too good.

With her own severely allergic child and being a take charge sort of person, she set about to create tasty items for her own family. Experimenting with ingredients and finding sources for alternatives to the common ingredients used in so many products was quite a challenge. She succeeded and makes creations that taste as good or better than the regular versions, opening up having birthday parties, deserts, pizza and doughnuts to people who never even tasted these delights.

Asked if it is something she can box up and sell like a cake mix, she says that it’s a lot of work since it is a multi-step process that most would not want to undertake. Definitely not for people like your host who find putting a bowl of soup in a microwave challenging…

But the good news is with a kitchen right here in Alpharetta, you can order these delicacies for your family and pick them up, now work involved. You can reach Emily at 770-664-5638 email mama@mamabakessafecakes.com or on the web at www.mamabakessafecakes.com

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Lynn Ross attended Auburn University, earning a degree in interior design.  After college she went into the retail industry, and was a buyer for a department store.  After getting married, Lynn moved to Valdosta with her husband.  There she found a job as the Activities Director for a skilled nursing facility, and absolutely loved it.

Finding she had a knack for working with seniors, she decided to enroll in Valdosta State University’s new Masters program in Social Work.  In 2001 she was part of the second graduating class, with only 30 other students!  A year later, in 2002, Lynn moved to Atlanta, and continued to work as an Activities Director at an assisted living facility.  This work led her to a position as a geriatric social worker for an elder law attorney.  Six years ago, today, Lynn became the first social worker in Emory University’s Department of Neurology Movement Disorders Program.

Lynn is very passionate about her work with Movement Disorders.  Though her work covers seven different movement disorders, Parkinson’s Disease is the most common.  To that end, Lynn is also the coordinator for the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s information and referral center.  Coincident with Lynn’s appearance on the show, Eugeria! Radio wants to make our listeners aware that April is National Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.  To that end, there are a number of events coming up including a golf tournament at Smokerise Country Club, a fundraising walks, several educational events, two shows with Lamb Chop and Mallory Lewis, and more.  For details on these events, check the APDA Georgia Chapter’s website at www.apdageorgia.org/.  Also don’t miss an opportunity to hear from Emory’s researchers on the latest ideas in Parkinson’s Disease research:  “Community Conversations with Emory Parkinson’s Disease Researchers” on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 10:00 am – 1:30 pm in the Claudia Nance Rollins Building, 1518 Clifton Road, Atlanta, 30322.  To register, go to www.udall.emory.edu/community_outreach.

To find out more about the Movement Disorder Program at Emory University’s Neurology Department, or to reach Lynn directly, call her at 404-728-6300.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.

VetJobs is the leading Internet niche job board for reaching the 10.5 million military veterans currently in the work force, the 200 thousand active duty military personnel who transition each year, the over 400,000 members of the National Guard and Reserve who return to the United States each year from extended deployments, and their family members.

VetJobs was established in 1999 following extensive research on job and resume sites catering to the military market. The research indicated there was a gap in sites which assisted employers in identifying the transitioning military and veteran candidate. VetJobs is operated by a seasoned management team of professionals to assist companies, recruiting firms and hiring authorities to successfully reach the military market.

VetJobs is owned and operated by veterans for veterans. In January 2000, The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States exclusively sponsored and purchased ten percent of the company. Since then, VetJobs has garnered more veteran service organization endorsements than any other site. Major endorsements include the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Naval Reserve Association and the Veterans of Modern Warfare.

VetJobs is recognized in the industry as the leading recruitment site to reach the military market.

VetJobs makes it easy for employers to reach and employ all the members of the military community. VetJobs defines the military community to include Air Force, Army, Coast Guard,  Department of Defense Civilians, Marine Corps, Merchant Marine, National Guard, Navy, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Public Health Service, Reserves and their spouses and dependents. VetJobs makes it easy to reach not only the transitioning military member, but also the highly qualified men and women who are veterans that have separated over the decades and are now productive members of the civilian work force in all disciplines.

VetJobs Vision

The VetJobs vision is to meet the shortage of qualified candidates in the civilian sector with highly trained veterans who can offer employers technical skills, management expertise and most importantly, leadership.

What VetJobs Offers Employers

With the VetJobs flat-fee structure, employer members get predictable annual expenses, no matter how many candidates they hire using the site, or how many recruiters use the site or company locations.

What VetJobs Offers Candidates

VetJobs has thousands of employers who have used the site to identify candidates from the transitioning military and veteran market. VetJobs averages more job postings than any other military or intelligence related job board!

The Employment Assistance section has guidance on how to organize a job search, write a resume, interview and identify your next employer.

VetJobs publishes a monthly newsletter for veterans called the Veteran Eagle. The newsletter has vital information about employment and the market, as well as topics of interest to people who have been associated with the military.

Ted Daywalt, President

Since 1999 Ted Daywalt has been the president and CEO of VetJobs (www.vetjobs.com), the leading military job board on the Internet and recognized as the best job board for veterans by CareerXRoads, WEDDLE’s, Workforce Management Magazine, AIRS and AOL. Mr. Daywalt is regularly cited and interviewed in the press, including USA Today, 60 Minutes, Military Times, PBS Frontline, NPR, CNN and FOX Business News.

Ted’s background includes both extensive military service and roles in the corporate world.  From 1971 to 1978 he served on active duty in the Navy as a line officer and intelligence officer, then transferred to the Naval Reserve Intelligence Program, from which he retired as a Captain (O-6) with 28 years of service. Ted has held executive positions in the steel, electric utility, importing, chemical and recruiting industries. He is a published author and is an in demand speaker, he testifies regularly before Congress on veterans and economic issues.

Ted Daywalt is recognized as having the best understanding of veteran employment in the United States.
