Vaughn Williams / Athletic Director & Presidential Cabinet Member, Kennesaw State University

Vaughn Williams brings his extensive knowledge and experience of collegiate athletics to the position of athletic director at Kennesaw State University. On April 12, 2011, University President Dr. Dan Papp announced at the conclusion of a national search that Williams would fill the void created by the retirement of Dr. Dave Waples, who had been the department’s athletic director since 1987. Williams officially took his post on May 2, stepping in for Senior Associate Athletic Director Scott Whitlock, who had served as Interim Athletic Director since Waples’ departure in August, 2010.

Prior to accepting the job at Kennesaw State, Williams has had a prestigious six-plus year tenure at the University of Connecticut. While there, Williams served as Associate Athletic Director, with his responsibilities mainly involving strategic planning, facility master planning and policy and procedure improvement. He also served as chair of the University of Connecticut’s Sportsmanship/Fan Environment Initiative Committee. At Connecticut, Williams directed the operation and management of 11 campus athletic facilities for 24 varsity sports and 600 student-athletes, as well as the university’s recreational/intramural program, which serves 3,500 participants.

He also oversaw the Huskies’ event management team that provides support to varsity sports, including the hosting of Big East and NCAA post-season events. In addition, Williams served as the program’s home game administrator for football and basketball games. Before arriving at Connecticut, Williams had over 10 years of NCAA Division I athletics experience. He was a staple at Boston College in their athletic department as an assistant athletic director for six years from 1998-2004. While working at Boston College, he earned his Masters degree in Administrative Studies.

Williams got his start working in collegiate athletics at the University of Utah. During his two years there, Williams went from the Assistant Director of Finance to the Director of Finance before leaving for the University of Toledo, where he served as the Associate Athletic Director of Business Affairs from 1996-1998.

Williams’ experience in athletics reaches beyond the boundaries of administration. Earning his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) in 1992, Williams was a four-year letter winner in football at UMass.

Williams and his wife, Eileen, have three children.

An impressive 55% of new companies are begun by women.  What triggers these creative adventures?  A chance conversation?  A news article? A long held dream? An I can do that attitude?  A bit of each of these?  We learn about two companies begun by dynamic women determined to make a difference. Medical Staffing Resources is one of Atlanta’s oldest, established healthcare staffing firms. By providing top talent, MSR believes they can truly make a difference in the long term stability of the healthcare community. 5 WIVES is a concierge business created to make life more manageable and enjoyable for its clients. Whether it is cleaning house, organizing files, washing sheets, restocking a pantry, or picking up dry cleaning, 5 WIVES engages in best practices, adheres to efficiency, and constantly seeks ways to add value to the customer’s life.

The guests are Michelle Lee and Adecia Shumate. As always the guests will be asked in what ways writing is a part of their business.

Michelle Lee serves as President and CEO of Medical Staffing Resources; she began with the company as a recruiter in the first few years of the business.  Michelle continues to build upon the mission and dream of the founder from whom Michelle purchased the company.  Adecia Shumate founded 5 WIVEs after the idea was first conceived during lunch with about 20 single friends in 2006.

Gene Beckham is a native of Perry, Georgia.  He is the owner of Business Furniture Services, Inc. in Marietta.  Long active in his community, Gene is a past president of the Roswell Rotary Club.  As he was passing the torch to the next president in 2008, he was looking for a signature project for the incoming president.  At this time, Gene became aware of the Honor Flight Network.  Drawn to honoring our veterans and their sacrifices for our freedom, Gene immediately knew this was something in which he wanted to be involved.

The Honor Flight Network provides WWII veterans an opportunity to make an all expenses paid trip to Washington, DC to visit the WWII Memorial.  Since the first trip in 2008, the Roswell Rotary Club has created Honor Air to continue to provide opportunities for WWII veterans to take this trip, and be honored for their service to our country.  Four trips have been completed, with a fifth scheduled for October 10, 2012.  This year’s trip has been made possible by Coldwell Banker and their local Atlanta-based agents for up to 60 veterans. Listen as Gene tells how this “one time project” has become an ongoing initiative for the Roswell Rotary Club!

For more information about this terrific trip to honor our WWII veterans or to make a donation, click here, send an email to rrhonorair@gmail.com, or call (678) 318-3647.  Contact Gene directly at (770) 971-5424, email him at gene@bfsga.com, or visit his website at www.bfsga.com.

Beverly Fenello/Women’s Council of REALTORS

Beverly Fenello is a REALTOR with Keller Williams Realty First Atlanta. She began her career as a Buyer’s agent and worked for the top agent in her office for several years before establishing her own business. She credits her success for selling listings to the ability to know what Buyers want and create the “perfect” showing condition in order to entice them to buy.

Beverly grew up in Columbia, S.C., and has lived in Atlanta since 1997. She is an active member of Northpoint Community Church, where she has participated as a small group leader for the Middle School Ministry and presently serves on the Host Team.

Beverly is an active member of the Atlanta Board of REALTORS and the Women’s Council of REALTORS where she is currently serving as President-Elect for the Atlanta Chapter.

Wesley Boyd/Wells Fargo Home Mortgage

Before joining Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, he worked for large financial institutions as well as small community lenders. Wesley has originated and approved thousands of mortgages.

Ashley Testa/Allstate Insurance – The Lincoln Wells Agency

For the past two years, Ashley has been the Director of Outside Sales and a top producer at the Lincoln-Wells Agency with Allstate Insurance. Her agency is ranked in the top 2% of the state and has a Retention Rate of 94%. The Agency is very involved with Habitat for Humanity and sponsors multiple athletic programs in the community and in several school systems. Ashley also serves as Vice President for the Legacy Park Networking Group, a local group of nearly 30 business leaders in her community.

Ashley is a native of Georgia. She has been active in Equestrian sports since childhood. At the age of 20, Ashley’s father endured a brain tumor; this led to her to take over her father’s business, a large collision center in Smyrna. This contributed to her strong leadership skills and intensive goal setting. This also helped her formulate her comprehensive skill set of the insurance industry. After successfully leading her father’s company for several years, she remained in the field as a Collision Adjuster. Her vast experience in the collision industry greatly compliments her ability as an agent in going above and beyond ensuring that the customer gets the maximum benefit.

Susan is a native of Atlanta having grown up in Sandy Springs.  Her banking career spans over 40 years and includes retail, mortgage, private, and business banking.  She currently works with State Bank & Trust in Buckhead.

She began writing her first novel about three years ago.  She completed “A Season For Living” in 2010 and self-published with iUniverse.  The novel’s genre is Romantic Historical Fiction and follows the lives of four very strong women from the late 1940’s to 2000 in Atlanta.  You will take a walk back to the Atlanta that we remember so fondly.  Each of the women has her own struggles, but the bond of family and friendship provides the love and support they all need to survive and triumph over tragedy and hardship.  Susan’s love for interior design is evident in the book with detailed descriptions of the homes they lived in and the places they visited.  Many of the homes and places in the book are historic homes and places in Atlanta, Roswell, Charleston, Charlottesville, Williamsburg and Kennebunkport. The book is available at Barnes & Noble on line, Amazon, and iUniverse.

Because of the wonderful responses she has received from her readers and the encouragement they provided, she is currently writing a sequel to “A Season for Living.”  This book continues to follow the lives of these strong women and you will meet new people who will add to the inspirational story.

Susan has five children and six grandchildren.  She lives in a North Atlanta suburb with her husband, Don.  She is a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta where she is an ordained deacon and has taught adult Sunday School for over twenty years.
