A rare native Atlantan, Sheri Maddox attended Georgia State University, earning an undergraduate degree in business.  She started her career in sales.  Not too long after graduation, Sheri’a grandmother passed away.  Her grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001, and needed to move out of his house to a community where he could get the care and attention he needed.  As Sheri became involved in her grandfather’s care, she realized how much she felt called to work as an advocate for seniors.

Today, Sheri is the Director of Community Relations for Sunrise of Johns Creek.  She loves the resources that Sunrise brings to bear in providing a safe, secure, caring and compassionate home for seniors – particularly those with some cognitive impairment.

Sheri also advocates for seniors through her volunteer work with the Alzheimer’s Association.  She got involved with this organization as a result of her grandfather’s diagnosis, and has found a place where she can really make a difference.  Our listeners can help Sheri make a difference by attending a terrific evening of food, cocktails and entertainment on September 13, from 6pm to 9pm at 56 East Andrews in Buckhead.  No RSVP required – just show up, enjoy the evening, and donate to a worthy cause.

Additionally, Sheri is co-chairing this year’s Atlanta Walk to End Alzheimer’s, being held on September 29 starting at 8 am at Atlantic Station.  To get more information or register a team, visit www.alz.org.  To find out more about Sunrise of Johns Creek, call 770-814-0505, visit their website at www.sunriseseniorliving.com, or send Sheri an email at johnscreekdcr@sunriseseniorliving.com.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.

Studies and personal experience tell us that writing about challenging, pain chilling experiences can help us move on after the trauma. In this broadcast our guests share their own experiences around this kind of writing.

The ArtReach Foundation, Inc. is an international non-profit dedicated to children and adults in their recovery from the traumatic effects from war, violence, or natural disaster. The ArtReach Model®  incorporates the creative arts therapies within a psycho-dynamic group process. Writing is one of those art forms. ArtReach is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and is also a registered NGO in Jordan. Ms. Susan Anderson is Founder & CEO of The ArtReach Foundation, Inc. Ms. Anderson is establishing an important U.S. initiative called “ArtReach: Project America” to help U.S. military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress and mild-traumatic brain injuries.

Robert Faulkender is a retired Army officer, businessman, and college professor. He is a graduate of West Point, and, while in the Military, earned an advanced degree in Operations Research Systems Analysis from Georgia Tech. In retirement, Bob has taken an interest in writing.  In his first book, Bob wrote about his military experiences based on his first year in Vietnam – Filtered by Time.

The Real Estate Connections event for this month will be on Thursday, September 6, from 6pm-9pm, and it will be held at Aja, a modern Asian kitchen, located in the Alliance Center on Lenox Road. If you are in Real Estate in Atlanta this is a must-go-to networking event.

Peter Pasternack/Foundations Designs

Peter Pasternack, from Foundation Designs, is one of our hosts and is also one of the stars of Flip This House,  one of television’s most recognized real estate investment and home renovation shows. His company designs, builds, and renovates residential andFoundation Designs commercial property.

Peter is in charge of the largest real estate networking event in town, Real Estate Connections, that is held every month.

Kevin L. Palmer/BrokerHost Solutions

Kevin L. Palmer serves as the CEO of BrokerHost Solutions.  Prior to founding BrokerHost Solutions, Kevin spent 25 years in the financial services industry in Atlanta. Kevin has held many senior management positions, including Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Operations Officer and Chief Compliance Officer. Most recently Kevin served as Chief Executive Officer/President and board chairman of one of the nation’s largest securities brokers-dealers and registered investment advisory firms. Kevin has also served as litigation strategist at one of the nation’s leading law firms, advising partners and their clients on regulatory and compliance matters.

In 2006, Kevin founded a very successful real estate agency in Atlanta, PalmerHouse Properties. Through the development and growth of the agency, Kevin identified a significant and unmet need of the real estate entrepreneur. Often times real estate agencies are started by talented and successful real estate agents; however, the talents that make a successful real estate professional does not always translate into the business skill-sets to operate and manage a business.

It was these personal experiences that caused Kevin to form BrokerHost Solutions – to support the real estate entrepreneur. BrokerHost will assist Brokers and Owners by assuming the back office and administrative operations of a real estate agency, at a cost less than hiring and maintaining a staff. BrokerHost has the qualified staff, systems and experience to support a real estate agency’s needs.

Craig M. Halperin/Halperin Lyman, LLC

Craig M. Halperin was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from North Springs High School, he conducted his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a B.A. in Business Economics. After graduation from law school, Craig practiced corporate law until making the switch to the practice of real property law in early 2006. Craig has acted as the Managing Partner and CFO of Halperin Lyman, LLC since its inception. Halperin Lyman has successfully conducted thousands of closings for hundreds of different clients, working hand in hand with real estate investors, agents and brokers, both conventional and private money lenders, as well as a team of vendors specializing in real estate investments, to see each transaction through from cradle to grave.

In addition to his work with Halperin Lyman, Craig is also the Owner and CEO of CGC Real Estate Services, LLC, an Atlanta based investment company providing a full spectrum of real estate investment consulting services. CGC purchases and sells its own investment properties, as well as helps other investors find inventory and buyers for their properties. Craig uses both personal and professional experience and knowledge of the economic markets surrounding the real estate industry, entrepreneurship, private investing, and finance in his consultations with clients and his speeches at educational and networking events to provide comprehensive advice for other real estate investors.

Strategies for Managing Less and Accomplishing More

All too often, companies become stagnant in their leadership processes and techniques and as a result, a wide gap is formed between employees and management. This gap results in an “us vs. them” mentality. In order to be effective, managers must learn the principles of “UnManagement.” This entails knowing how to develop processes that tie into key business objectives and learn to manage by using these processes, not personality. Managers will also develop an accountability process that will reinforce and drive business results. This session is designed to help leaders drive business objectives throughout their organization using the UnManagement principles and create a communication process to increase trust and improve morale. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Use the principles of UnManagement to build trust and communication in their organization

• Know how to develop, track, and implement key business objectives

• Know how to use processes, such as business scorecards and action registers, to drive accountability.

Seth has over 19 years experience in the consulting and training arena. Seth stresses organizations today must create and sustain a culture with three non-negotiable attributes. Those attributes include: a sense of urgency, a clear and concise business focus and leadership driven, shared accountability. At Competitive Solutions, Inc. he is a managing partner and senior consultant delivering business solutions to organizations. Organizations he has worked with include Pfizer, Goodwill Industries, Revlon, Genzyme, Manatee County Tax Collector, Michelin Tire, Genetech, National Institute Severely Handicapped (NISH)
