How to Assess Franchise Opportunities

With all the business opportunities out there, franchising remains the best path to owning your own business. But you really need to understand how to assess the opportunity, or you might wind up working for the Franchisor instead of yourself. I’m happy to help you do that.

Mark Kaplan has a BS in Finance from The Wharton School, and an MBA from NYU in Strategic Marketing. After a short stint in Banking on Wall Street, he started his Marketing Career at Colgate Palmolive as the Assistant Brand Manager on Palmolive Dishwashing Liquid. He then joined Nabisco Brands, as the Brand Manager on Baby Ruth Candy Bars, and was later promoted to Senior Brand Manager on Wheat Thins Crackers. He then joined The Coca Cola Company here in Atlanta as the Senior Brand Manager on Sprite and Diet Sprite. During Mark’s tenure on the Brand, Sprite overtook 7UP as the #1 Lemon Lime in the Country. In 1989, Mark and his partner acquired Gyro Wrap, and set out to develop this small, local food concept into a national franchised-chain of Hot Wrapped Sandwiches. They renamed the Brand “Great Wraps” in the mid 90’s, expanded the Concept to offer a variety of tasty/healthy Wrapped Sandwiches, and are approaching their 80th store. Great Wraps has recently developed the most cutting-edge, “greenest” cooking platform in the industry that enables them to serve their Hot Wrapped Sandwiches, Cheesesteaks, Fries and Full Breakfast with no grill, no frying and no hood. This proprietary operation results in even tastier, hot food…..but is now far less caloric and fattening than competition. This superior operation now enables Great Wraps to expand from the Shopping Mall sector to capitalize on smaller spaces in the College, Airport and Military sectors. The future is indeed bright for Great Wraps!

We sat down to talk with Jennifer Dorian, senior vice president, strategy development, for Turner Entertainment Networks (TEN) and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media group (AYAKM). In this lively and fun-filled interview, listen to Jennifer’s stories about what it takes to succeed. She embodies someone who is very comfortable in her own skin and has these four pieces of advice:

1) Be your own agent, 2) Act like you belong, 3) Be fearless, 4) Be a catalyst for change.

Scroll down below to read the fun “Declaration of Personal Responsibility” that Jennifer and her team enacted in 2009 to get better work life integration.

In her role, Jennifer serves as a strategic business and branding consultant for TEN, which includes TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and truTV, and AYAKM, which includes Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. Dorian is based in Atlanta and reports to Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, and to Stuart Snyder, president and chief operating officer of AYAKM

Previously, Dorian served as senior vice president, network strategy and brand development, for TEN. She oversaw strategic business planning and brand identity development and image marketing for both networks. Prior to that position, Dorian was vice president of branding for TNT where, in 2001, she led the network’s launch and on-going strategic brand positioning as “TNT: We Know Drama.” Dorian’s positioning of the brand became a resounding success, with TNT ranking as ad-supported cable’s #1 network in delivery of key adult demos for six consecutive years. TNT has been able to monetize its positioning with advertisers in large part because of the groundwork laid by Dorian and the network team.

Dorian also oversaw the June 2004 creation and implementation of the “TBS Very Funny” brand. The positioning proved enormously successful, with TBS consistently ranking as one of basic cable’s Top 5 networks with young adults. On the strength of her work with TNT and TBS, Dorian was honored with a Brand Builders award from Brandweek. She is also leading Turner Entertainment Networks’ strategic business planning, brand development and portfolio management.  Her work in that area includes a focus on innovation for the organization and exploration of extending brands into new arenas and platforms, such as the highly successful TCM Classic Film Festival.

Prior to joining Turner in 2000, Dorian was director of strategic services for sports and leisure marketing at The Coca-Cola Co., based in Atlanta. In that capacity, Dorian oversaw a portfolio of U.S. sponsorships, assessing proposals and evaluating brand alignment and potential returns on investments. Previously, Dorian was manager of kids marketing for Pizza Hut, Inc., a division of PepsiCo. She joined the company as assistant manager of new product development. Dorian also served as director of marketing for InfoVentures of Atlanta, a partnership of Cox Enterprises and the former BellSouth.

Dorian holds a master of business administration degree in marketing from the University of Texas and a bachelor’s degree from Emory University. Within Turner, she is involved in mentoring through Turner Women Today and TEN Mentoring. She serves on the board of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau; the National Marketing Committee of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF; and the board of the PATH Foundation. In 2009, she was recognized by Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) with the Horizon Award. In 2011, WICT named Dorian as a Woman to Watch.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, creates and programs branded news, entertainment, animation and young adult media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world.

Declaration of Personal Responsibility by Jennifer Dorian and Team

The unanimous declaration of the Strategy Development Department

When in the course of work/life events, it becomes necessary for one team to dissolve the traditional habits and norms that pre-dated them in the corporate world, and to proactively assume leadership of their own destinies and create the best working environment, norms and personal habits to propel them to do their best work and live their best lives.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all team members are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Having a Life, Personal Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  That to secure these rights, Employers provide outlets for creativity, constant learning, making a contribution, teamwork, challenges, self-esteem and financial compensation and benefits.  We embrace the role of employers in our lives but cast off the yoke of tradition.

It is our duty to throw off such conventional out-dated habits which may hold us back, and to provide new norms for the future success of our enterprises and our personal selves.

We cast off the following conventions of corporate life:

  • Traditional, rigid work schedules
  • Staying late at the office to impress others
  • Bound to working only at our desks
  • “Dress for success”
  • Lunch “hour”

We replace these conventions with an invitation to find personal work habits that are most effective for the individual and still effective for the group and clients.  These may include (but are not limited to):

  • Telecommuting and working off-site
  • Pre-established flexible hours (core hours and communication to immediate manager)
  • Exercise during business hours
  • Appropriate dress for the occasion
  • Thinking time, exploring time
  • Spending time with outsiders
  • “Meetings management” (the right to say ‘no’)
  • Punctuality

We solemnly publish and declare that these employees of the strategy and brand development team are absolved from all allegiance to “the old ways” and may act as free and independent people with the full power of personal responsibility to produce excellent work and make full contributions while achieving our unalienable rights.  We mutually pledge to each other our work lives, our fortunes and our honor.

Signed this 24th day of September, in the year of 2009.  We the undersigned affix our signatures to this document:

Blake Hawkins is a North Georgia native!  He went to the University of Georgia, then later to Florida State.  After graduation, Blake spent a number of years with Florida’s Lee County Recreation Department, then moved back to his native Georgia to work for Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation.  About five years ago, Blake fulfilled a lifelong dream of going into business with a group of investors to open a local Sports Bar in downtown Grayson, The Hail Mary Sports Pub.  Blake says the name came from the notion that the investors put all their money into this venture, kind of like throwing up a “Hail Mary” pass in a football game.

During his time at Gwinnett County, Blake became acquainted with Gary Galloway and Gwinnett County Senior Services through a number of cooperative events.  Serving the seniors of Gwinnett County is important to Blake, particularly as he deals with care issues for his own parents.

To that end, Blake is proud to host the Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services 4th Annual Shrimp & Crawfish Boil this coming Saturday, May 19.  The event will be from 4pm to 7pm at The Hail Mary Sports Pub, located at 1950 Grayson Highway.  Tickets are $25 ($15 for designated drivers), and are likely to sell out.  To reserve your tickets, please call (770) 963-0205.  Bring your appetite, and we’ll see you there!

From the other end of Atlanta, Ginger Couch is also a Georgia native!  Growing up in South Fulton County, Ginger attended La Grange College for her undergraduate work, then went on to West Georgia College for her Masters.  To help with her college expenses, Ginger worked part time as an Activities Director in an assisted living community, as well as a Med Tech.  Like Blake, she also dealt with family aging issues as her family moved her grandmother into a community in Lithonia.

Today, Ginger is the Regional Director of Community Relations for the Principal Senior Living Group.  Principal Senior Living Group owns and operates five unique assisted living communities in the metro Atlanta area, including Douglasville, Newnan, Roswell, Covington and Stockbridge.  New communities are planned in the north metro area in the next year or so.  Most operate under the name Benton House.  They are unique in that they are designed around a central common area, with the doors of each unit opening into the common area.  This provides an enhanced sense of community.  To find out more, visit their website at www.bentonhouse.com, or send Ginger an email gcouch@principalseniorliving.com.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.  Griswold Home Care has offices in more than 175 markets nationwide.

We opened the show with a quick  Blackberry PlayBook review, the new tablet from the folks at RIM (Research in Motion). It is a great tablet for the money – excellent value for all the features you get and you don’t have to be a Blackberry phone user to get the PlayBook (but it helps). This device has a camera and a video camera. It also has HDMI ports so you can hook it up and watch movies on your HD TV. The video quality is top notch. It seems faster than my Kindle Fire and the video quality is definitely better plus you get a camera so if those are the features that are most important for you then the PlayBook is a no brainer.

Rosie Falconi/Falconi Designs/Whimsical Wascals

Rosie Falconi is a local artist who started her business “Falconi Designs” 10 years ago here in the Atlanta area. Her focus is on custom murals for the home, business, school or any other area that needs a splash of color. Last year she created another division called, “Whimsical Wascals” which specializes in original and whimsical hand-painted pet portraits. Her most recent project however, was when she illustrated her 1st book, “I CAN Fix America” by David Duley. It is a coffee table book with 52 common sense ways YOU can make the United States great again.

Ron Rizzi/Drive For Research Foundation, Inc.

Ron Rizzi is the founder of Drive For Research Foundation. He created this new organization in the last quarter of 2011 in response to the many challenges and obstacles that prevented success in attaining the goals that were set to raise awareness and prevent brain tumors.

As an Acoustic Neuroma brain tumor survivor he understands the financial, emotional and physical challenges as well as the hardship that invades the life of a brain tumor patient and their family.

The programs Daily Drive To Survive® and Pledge The Miles You Drive® were  created and designed by Ron for the purpose of raising awareness and most importantly to raise funds for the cause. He felt that many other causes captured all of the media’s attention to the detriment of others, especially brain cancer, brain tumors and brain tumor research.

His idea of reaching out to all of us as we drive our car or ride a bus or train to work each morning is a universal theme. One that would allow more people to get involved and support this important effort.

Their “mission is to supply the ‘Drive’ to support high performance accelerated clinical brain tumor research, find the key to unlock brain cancer and prevent all types of brain tumors in our lifetime.”

Funds raised throughout the United States will initially provide research grants that will support:  Duke Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Raleigh, NC., Emory Brain Tumor Center, Atlanta, GA., and Swedish Neuroscience Center, Seattle, WA. Long range research grant plans include expansion across the country adding additional accelerated brain tumor research organizations and institutions.

With the support from contributors’ personal daily drive, riding commute and pledge of the miles they drive or ride the Foundation will make the road to finding a cure for brain cancer and brain tumors a short ride. Other Cause InnovatorsTM – Created Specifically For Accelerated Brain Tumor Research are Grey Matters More Than You Think!TM, Daily Drive to Survive® and Pledge The Miles You Drive®, Daily Ride to Survive® and Pledge The Miles You Ride®, and Daily Commute To SurviveTM and Pledge The Miles You Ride®
