Randy Langford is a native Texan and grew up in Dallas before becoming a pastor. Through his work in the ministry, Randy developed a great passion for seniors and a desire to see them live rich and fulfilling lives. After 25 years in the ministry, Randy entered the security business and began networking with large retirement communities. Joining us today from the Wesley Woods Transitions Senior Program were Karen McMichael-James, Pat Rich and Sandy Glasser.  Karen McMichael-James is a licensed social worker originally from Philadelphia.  Pat Rich is a licensed professional counselor who fell in love with caring for the elderly while taking care of her mother.  Finally, Sandy Glasser is a licensed professional counselor, born in Germany who started her career in childhood education, but later returned to school to get her licensed professional counselor certification.

The Wesley Woods Senior Transitions Program is a comprehensive short-term outpatient program that provides support and treatment for older adults facing emotional or behavioral health difficulties.  The program meets Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm.  The structured format provides medical monitoring as well as therapeutic groups and activities.  Transitions can be used as a step down from in-patient treatment as well as a program for older adults needing an intensive level of care, but not hospitalization.  For more information about the Wesley Woods Senior Transitions Program, call them at (404) 728-4776, or visit their website here.

There are some mixed feelings about going to the hospital in July. Some people try never to do it – but some recent research says that it is a myth. The research says that hospital mortality rates don’t rise in July but that research was done by a bunch of doctors.

But lets look at these events that happen in July. More senior doctors take vacation in the summer and in July in particular. A lot of medical school student doctors are filling in and covering more hours for vacationing docs. With both of these factors in play do you think you will get the hospital’s best staff in July?

A recent Swedish study has shown that exercise may help create more cells in the disks of your lower back. The study concluded that the increase in cells should increase the circulation which in turn will help relieve lower back pain. To us the study was too small and not on humans so take it with a grain of salt.

Annabelle Malins and Lorraine ChilversTune in as CFOradio host Lorraine Chilvers interviews Annabelle Malins, head of the British Consulate General in Atlanta, Georgia.

Annabelle took up her appointment as Her Majesty’s Consul General in September 2009. She leads a staff working throughout the Southeast on a wide range of issues, including support for British nationals, public diplomacy on the UK government’s policy priorities, scientific co-operation, and trans-Atlantic trade and investment.

Prior to her Atlanta post, Annabelle was the Consul for Science and Innovation at the British Consulate General in San Francisco. In addition to building UK-US bridges in all aspects of science and technology, she led broad-ranging exchanges on climate change and energy issues. She facilitated a collaboration with California on climate change and energy launched by then-Prime Minister Tony Blair and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at Long Beach in 2006.

We were so happy to have on our good friend Liz Neporent she is a true leader in the fitness industry. Not only has she written all those fitness books that are on your shelf like:   Fitness for Dummies, Abs of Steel, The Ultimate Body, Weight Training For Dummies and The Fat Free Truth she hangs out with the smart folks at the Harvard Medical School. She also writes for Shape.com and  ABC online.

You may not know that Liz is an avid runner who has completed more than 20 marathons and ultra-marathons. Running in the Heat Tips

  1. Go early or late
  2. Stay hydrated – drink whenever you are thirsty
  3. Wear breathable fabric – but this is really important if you are going out for longer than and 1-2 hours
  4. Lube up to prevent chafing
  5. Find the right shoes for you

Minimalist Shoe Tips like the Vibram Five Fingers

  1. Not for everyone’s feet
  2. Not for every kind of workout
  3. Not for people with certain knee or foot injuries
  4. Get slowly acclimated with to the shoe
  5. Do extra foot exercises before running with these shoes

It’s hot out there so when you start exercising in the heat you have to be careful. Here are some tips to help you get outside and safely take advantage of this wonder hot weather.

  1. Acclimate slowly to the heat over 2-3 weeks
  2. If you can’t deal with the heat – go out early in the morning or in the evening
  3. Wear the correct breathable exercise clothes
  4. Drink plenty of fluids

Here’s another great Roni Noone breakfast recipe. This spinach egg muffin recipe is from her GreenLiteBites book and blog. Pre-heat your oven to 375. Whisk up your eggs or egg whites with some baby spinach the pour into some muffin tins. Toss some bacon bits on top for added flavor. Bake for 10-12 minutes and serve hot.
