Perceived exertion rate is an important component in determining if you’ll stay compliant with an exercise program. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on nutrition and human behavior expert Randy Karp joined us. He talked all about how we are totally misinformed about food. For example he says cooking with unstable vegetable oils is bad for you. Instead cook in high heat with extra virgin coconut oil. And be careful with your olive oil. Most olive oils are devoid of health benefits, especially when heated. When asked if he could only eat one food he said it would be avocado.  Regarding fish he said that the pro’s of eating fish are that they eat algae which is good for you but the cons are that they also live in water that has toxins. So choose your fish wisely. On his website he has lots of information about healthy eating and healthy foods. He produces his own line of extra virgin olive oil which he makes in very small quantities to ensure quality. And a new product called Just Like Sugar that has only 1 calorie in 5 lbs. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on an inspirational story from breast cancer survivor and author Lauren Miller. Lauren was diagnosed with Stage three breast cancer at age 38. A diagnosis that came just five days after her divorce became final. She was given a 50-50 chance of survival. As a mother of three children Lauren wrote of her spiritual journey in Hearing His Whisper. Lauren’s mantra “I Choose Life” helped her get through this harrowing ordeal. She has also used her battle with cancer not to feel like a victim but to empower her to live life in the moment. She actually said that cancer was a gift. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain proper hand washing techniques to prevent getting the H1N1 Swine, Bird, Hamster or any other flu. The TV character Monk who uses a wipe after each touch has it right. During this flu season you should be washing your hands way more often than normal. Some doctors say to wash your hands 10 times a day. The temperature of the water does not matter as much as the vigorous scrubbing with soap. So scrub, scrub, scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds. Or do what Monk does and have your assistant Natalie give you a baby wipe after each human encounter. We opened the show with Dr. Colin Roopnarine, of Northpoint Family Chiropractic.  Dr. Colin, and his wife Dr. Claudia have practiced Chiropractic for more than fifteen years.  Doctors Roopnarine serve families, from infant to senior.  For Dr. Roopnarine, he takes particular pride in helping seniors live active, pain-free lives.  Dr. Colin also specializes in fall prevention among seniors.  Prompted by falls from family members, he began to investigate ways to address structural ankle instability.  Listen as Dr. Colin discusses how to prevent falls.  Contact Dr. Colin at yourfamilydoc@comcast.net.
