Higher-Humble-Purpose

Higher Humble Purpose E4

Stepping into our higher purpose, we connect to a deeper sense of energy that we experience viscerally, shares Erica Schaper, Chairman of the Board of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Purpose helps Erica to be decisive, also when she needs to take unpopular decisions. In the heat of a challenging conversation, she keeps an eye on what is truly important, so as not get distracted by emotions, hers or anyone else’s.

Erica finds greater strength in purpose by becoming clear what she is really called to focus on and what is outside of her scope. She humbly acknowledges that we are only on this planet for a very short time and we will not solve all our problems in our lifetimes. Does that dissuade her from giving it her all? No, not at all. Erica stays focused on her purpose and takes small steps towards it every day. This includes taking care of herself, taking time off, spending time with her wife Hetty at their horse farm, or losing herself in a good book.

NHL Stenden. Groundbreaking.

By expanding your boundaries, there is no telling what you might accomplish. That is why we challenge our students, staff and partners every day to discover and develop their talents, as part of a journey that transcends the limits of their own professional field and immediate environment. Erica-SchaperErica Schaper is a passionate director, executive and supervisor with a social heart and extensive experience in realising strategic reorientations with organisations in the public domain.

She makes sure the focus is on results and efficiency. In doing so, she uses the internal motivation of employees for their profession or the context in which they work. Her strength lies in moving people.

Within an organization, she encourages individual responsibility for employees’ own development and job satisfaction. People experience this as pleasant, but also as decisive, reliable, transparent and honest, with an eye for the human factor.

As a Chairperson of the Executive Board, Erica Schaper carries executive responsibility for NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. January 2018 marks the start of NHL Stenden University after the merger; a brand-new university where 24 000 students and more than 2000 academic staff expand their boundaries every day. About Our Host

Hylke-Faber-headshotFor as long as he can remember Hylke Faber has been curious about what this life is about. His ongoing inquiry has become his work: helping people individually and collectively to discover what is possible in life and express that authentically and fearlessly.

Hylke started his work life with Towers Perrin as consultant and then as Partner with Strategic Decisions Group, serving a wide range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, consumer electronics and life sciences companies. A major shift occurred during this critical phase of his life. He had become the typical, hard-charging, 16-hours-a-day strategy consultant, and was burning out at a rapid clip.

When he discovered meditation, everything changed. He was so taken by his new discoveries that he chose to bring to business what he was learning: that there is a way we can have it all – we can be fulfilled, do work we love, and create extraordinary results with others. He thinks of it as creating a sense of ease in business.

He learned how to coach and facilitate human transformation completing his coaching certification with Newfield Network and by working at Axialent, the culture and leadership company. After a few years, he founded Co-Creation Partners together with other leaders in the field of transformation and personal development. Then he formed Constancee to help people grow by creating the conditions where deep personal, interpersonal and organizational shifts happen routinely.

He leads Growth Leaders Network, the culture and team development consultancy. He has also taught coaching at Columbia Business School Executive Education and has contributed to Harvard Business Review. He is currently teaching a course on Climate Conscious Leadership at Arizona State University. His award-winning book, Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader, was published by Dover in 2018.

His next book, Taming Your Crocodiles Practices for Leadership Depth, came out in 2020. Besides helping others grow, which he loves, he is a trained opera singer, enjoys hiking and writing, is an avid reader, in particular of biographies, and is always in the process of growing himself. He integrates all of what he learns in his work with executives.

Living-The-Dream

Living The Dream E121

Franco Albarran, Principal Architect at Albarran Architecture + Construction, engages listeners as he starts off the show sharing that he is one of 10 siblings and comes from a family with over 40 grandchildren.

Franco comes from a family of Jewelers and was taught a lot about business ownership and leadership. Although he did not continue on as a jeweler like fellow family members, he has continued on with their hard work ethic and successful traits. Tune in to hear Franco talk about how being an architect and builder has paved the way for a successful future.

ALBARRAN | Architecture + Construction a Boutique Architectural and Construction Firm with a unique Architect Led Design + Build process where the same design professional is the single point of contact from beginning to end. This allows for seamless transitions through all phases of design and construction. Albarran Architects Logo 2020-05

Their goal is to simplify the client experience through effective communication, proactive/efficient project management, and a forward thinking approach to design & construction.

Franco-Albarran-2020ProfilePhotoBorn in Mexico City, Franco Albarran is a first generation immigrant.

He was raised in Rosenberg – a suburb 30 miles southwest of Houston, Texas. He’s the youngest of 10 siblings and the only one to attend college and graduate. He attended the University of Houston and received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1999.

The impulse to design and create are in Franco’s DNA. At an early age he learned the value of design aesthetics and craftsmanship to create a unique piece. His father was a 3rd generation custom jewelry designer and fabricator.

Some of Franco’s best memories were being allowed to join his father in his workshop, where he witnessed the entire process from beginning to end. It started first with a client’s idea of what they wanted, then his father’s intricate design, then many hours spent creating the piece, and finally seeing the sheer joy of a customer receiving their unique design.

Franco started out as many architects do – creating architectural designs based on a client’s wish list and then engaging the services of a contractor to build the project. He felt this process could be disjointed and subtleties of a refined design were sometimes lost in the process. He wanted the opportunity to carry a project through from design to construction and was able to pursue this in 2010.

This allowed the client to have a single point of contact throughout the entire project and made the process seamless for the owner. Having one individual at the helm of what can be a fairly complex process simplifies the client experience, and ensures that the true intent of the design is preserved.

Over the years Franco has had the privilege of developing strong relationships with interior designers, craftsmen, vendors, and suppliers who are trusted and essential members of the team and work together to create each unique custom project.

E110 Making an Impact with Project Management featuring Milan Dordevic

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Milan Dordevic for an in-studio discussion. We get to hear Milan share his story and how he began a career in Project Management spanning many countries and industries. Milan and Joe also discussed Leadership, Certifications, Artificial Intelligence and so much more.

Milan is a certified project management expert and leader, author, speaker, and business and technology mentor for high-tech start-ups. His expertise is in complex & remote project and product management, organizational development, and change, all of which he has gained over the course of 15 years. Through dynamic leadership and vision, he is driving business and product innovation, automatization, digitalization, program efficiency, and scaling agility in the organization.

Milan has made a big impact in his career and when asked about how did he do so much so quickly he shared, “I was never afraid of doing some project or taking the project or jumping into something that I didn’t know I was learning by doing. In the meanwhile, every night I was reading about it, I was enrolling myself, currently in parallel with my family.”

When asked about some lessons learned during his experiences Milan shared, “I think the biggest mistake that people, organization do, they read about some methodology, they read about some approach or they hear that one company succeeded because they did it in that way and they want to do the same. So there is one person who succeed. He was doing it the same way and you want to do the same. No, but you are in different industry, you have different products, your story is different. You need to take all those things into consideration and apply to your organization company approach. So you cannot implement. There are probably chances that you will succeed, but there are plenty of approaches, plenty of methodologies, frameworks, and you can select one of them or you can make even better, custom one, select the best from all of them and apply to your organization. Make a custom fit.”

Eagle-Eye-Productions-logo

Eagle Eye Productions is a company based in the DFW metroplex that provides construction consulting work for Construction, Mining, Oil and Gas, Forestry and Transportation companies across the US and International markets.

Through their main services being Media, Branding, Web Development, Operational Development and Training Eagle Eye Productions has a goal to change companies through building a foundation for people centered service culture companies. Their core mission is to create a community build on values that create “Limitless Boundaries”

Their team believes that with a big enough community of companies focused on doing what’s right above what’s making them more money, there will be real change in the blue collar industries and may solve some workforce issues we see today.

Forrest-Dorhmann-MAC-and-BleuForrest Dohrmann first got his first opportunity to get a taste of the construction industry as a freshman in high school at the age of 12-13 working as an intern at a local Drafting agency in his small town.

Throughout the years in high school he stayed interested in the industry and began working his junior and senior years full time as a laborer and carpenter at a local remodeling business while also doing duel enrollment in Gainesville FL Santa Fe College.

After officially graduating high school online through his college, he decided to drop out of college and keep working as a carpenter and foreman in the Gainesville and surrounding areas.

Shortly after he moved to the DFW area where he began his career learning commercial construction working for a few General Contractors. Working from a carpenter to foreman, Assistant Superintendent to Project Engineer He realized there was a massive issue in the construction industry and decided to make some changes in the industry by starting his company now, Eagle Eye Productions.

Young but with over 13 years experience in the industry, his goal is to learn as much about how blue collar businesses operate so his company can help offer value to the areas they need help.

The Excitant and The Igniter – aka The 2 Dudes E11

Kyle McIntosh of the Mac6 co-working space in Tempe faced a major problem. Tenants of the building began to fear for their safety and were moving out due to a growing homeless population in the area. Kyle & community leader Darren Chapman put their heads together to come up with a proactive solution that not only alleviated the problem but also benefited the the displaced individuals taking up residence.

Carla explores the idea of “Conscious Capitalism” in this episode of Smashing Through Walls with her guests Kyle and Darren (aka Dude 1 & Dude 2). Together, the three take listeners on a journey of positive impact & change through relationships. They discuss how commercial real estate can institute concepts that push the community in a positive direction.

The Tiger Mountain Foundation, led by Darren Chapman installs community gardens with native, food producing plants in spaces that you might not expect to find them and uses these gardens to create a sense of community pride and lift up people in need. TMFLogoNewTiger31521

What if you could smash down some walls and create an effective solution of social entrepreneurism? Join Carla and her guests Kyle & Darren to find out exactly what that means, how they did it, and and the major positive impact it is having on their community!

TigerMountain Foundation converts space into edible landscaping, workforce development and lifestyle transition and transformation opportunities.

PicDarrenlittlegirlsplantingDarren Chapman is a community pro-activist who has committed his life to helping people. He is Founder and CEO of TigerMountain Foundation (a.k.a. TMF), which has implemented Empowerment Initiatives to uplift communities and eliminate blight.

TMF’s initiatives are community garden / landscaping development, audio, visual and performance art, community service and volunteerism. The gardens promote healthy living and active lifestyles by feeding, engaging and enfranchising the community.

2) Flexibility: From the perspective of, The most flexible work spaces in Arizona, getting you laser focused on what you love to do and building your business with the freedom to not need to know what it may look like tomorrow let alone in three years.

3) Community: From the perspective of, growing your team and your business in a high performing and healthy environment, while being connected with the MAC6 Community of over 100 businesses.

Located in Tempe, 10 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and 15 minutes from Arizona State University, the MAC6 Entrepreneurial campus offers 150,000 square feet of space including traditional and non-traditional private office suites, a variety of coworking office space solutions, and a unique light co-manufacturing space; all in service to growth-oriented entrepreneurs, startups, and mid-market.

Kyle-McIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?”

From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6. MAC6 Builds Better Communities where People and Businesses Thrive, in commercial office buildings, co-working spaces, and co-manufacturing space. Additionally, he sits on the board of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona.

E109 Utilizing Research in Project Management with Robert Joslin

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Robert Joslin to the show. We get to hear Robert share his story and learn about the founding of AIPMO. Robert and Joe also discussed global associations, industry research, Agile in PMOs and so much more.

Robert is a Portfolio/project/program management consultant, professor, and engineer. He has 25 plus years in designing, initiating management delivery of business transformation, reengineering, infrastructure, and strategy development including winning national prizes for ideas and product innovation.

Why start AIPMO? “AIPMO stands for the Association of International Project Management Officers. So really the association should be about the individuals rather than the project management office itself. So the O could be officers or office, depending on how you use the term. And the reason I actually set up AIPMO back in 2015 was having worked on projects pretty much all my life and experienced projects, good ones, poor ones, you realize actually in the projects that are poorly run, how it actually impacts individuals.”

What differences do you find with PMOs from different regions around the world? “I actually call Saudi Arabia the Kingdom of PMOs because it has so many structured PMOs run by consulting companies like McKinsey, for example. PwC is big into PMOs. So really Saudi Arabia has maybe surprising to some, it’s extremely advanced in the way that PMOs they’ve actually developed.”
