Customer Service is Meaningless, Customer Loyalty is Value E104

In this episode of Tycoons, Todd Ludlow joins the show to talk about Chenoa Fund. Todd takes us back to 2006 and helps us visualize how and why the concept of Chenoa Fund came about and the positive impact it has on homeowners today. Chenoa-Fund-logo

Austin, Landon and Todd take us behind the scenes of how mortgages work and how the broker firms make their money.

Tune in to hear what Todd’s why is and how his background in loan origination has led him to be a successful entrepreneur in a leading market, the FHA housing market.

Todd-Ludlow-Tycoons-of-Small-BizTodd Ludlow, Co-Founder of Chenoa Fund, developed the business concept in 2006 and due to the financial melt-down had to wait until 2013 before he could begin to get market traction.

Chenoa Fund is operated in partnership with a Native American tribe, which gives them the structure needed to provide down payment assistance to aspiring homebuyers.

They focus on reducing the homeownership gap by assisting minorities (primarily, but not limited to that demographic) in obtaining the funds needed to purchase a home with a local lender.

The local lender then sells the loan to Chenoa Fund, and they combine that loan with hundreds of other loans each month and deliver them to the financial markets.

In 2019 they beat HUD in a legal matter that allowed  their business to really gain traction. They help over 1,100 households each month at present.

A simple desire in 2003 to have a naturally delicious, authentic and healthy granola without lots of fat or fillers led Chef Laura Briscoe to the creation of Vanilla Almond Crunch -the first of what became nine distinctively different varieties of granola created under the banner of her second company, Laura’s Gourmet Granola.

Each mouthwatering flavor of Laura’s Gourmet Granola uses only premium ingredients and is baked the artisan way – one batch at a time – making this elevated brand truly “gourmet granola”.

Laura-Briscoe-Germain-SolisChef Laura Briscoe is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and spent 14 years in sales executive roles for companies like Apple, Oracle and Sun.

A self-described “high tech refugee”, Laura Briscoe made the dramatic change from IT sales to culinary professional and gourmet chef.

Leaving a highly lucrative career in sales for well-known tech companies but suffering burnout, Laura Briscoe had always found cooking to be a source of comfort and relaxation.

In 2001, Laura trained to be a chef with Le Cordon Bleu North America and invested her passion into creating high quality cuisine. Her first company, Celebrated Cuisine, was known for high end elegant events throughout Arizona’s Valley of the Sun.

In addition, Chef Laura offered culinary education in a variety of formats, including hands on, demonstration and through various media, including several locally broadcast TV shows.

Chef Laura started her second company, Laura’s Gourmet Granola, after finding traction with a recipe she created for her own enjoyment.

Germain Solis is Chef and Manager of Production and Supply Chain at Laura’s Gourmet Granola.

He is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu North America and has been employed by Laura’s Gourmet since 2016 and Celebrated Cuisine since 2016.

Germain is responsible for all aspects of production including scheduling production runs, baking, packaging and palletizing finished goods for shipping to distributors.

He manages both the baking and production associates, their schedules and responsibilities.

E102 Project Management Research, Key Findings with Louise Worsley

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe chats with Louise Worsley. Louise is a consultant, lecturer and coach in the Project Management industry for over 30 years. She shared several stories and experiences with us including key points from years of research conducted for several organizations.

Louise leads the leadership module on the Masters in Project Management at the University of Cape Town and is the author of several books and publications on portfolio and project management, including Stakeholder-led Project Management: Changing the way we manage projects.

Louise and PMO Joe chatted about Leadership, with Louise sharing, “And for me, the currency of leadership is relationships. So I had to build those relationships in the University so that I could run this relatively complex program and build that coalition of support that we needed in order to do this major change program. And I think I personally had to change. I have to now focus not on doing things, but on creating those connections. And I think that for me was when I started to feel, gosh, this is what it means to be a manager. Here’s what it means to run projects.”

We also learned quite a bit about the research Louise has conducted over the years. What important findings can we learn from research? Is there a method or process that is more successful than another? She shared, “what we also found is that you could have one person using the same method and another person using the same method. One was incredibly successful, one was incredibly unsuccessful. So what was different about the people? What really mattered? So we went and measured their high performing project managers and looked at them. And I think one of the interesting first, the most important behavioral competence came out. And I’ve mentioned this before was integrity.”

Louise and PMO Joe continue their discussion about the various research findings and what to look for with successful project management.

Architecture – Present and Future with Lance Baker, Synectic Design, Inc. E4

Lance Baker, Principal at Synectic Design, Inc. joined us on MAC & Bleu today. Lance is an accomplished architect that has been in the Valley since 1996 and has owned his own shop for 23 years. Lance brought an infectious energy about adapting technology and fostering collaboration into the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) industry.

Lance discussed how REVIT and BIM (modeling) are the new normal and how design is being delivered to the clients and the associated consultants and contractors. Lance is excited and passionate about taking the modeling to the next level; incorporating future technology to help on items like energy efficiency, life cycle costs, and return on investment. Lance focuses on a strong culture for his firm and his client base. It was a pleasure to have Lance on the program as the first Architect in the series.

Lance brings a pragmatic and refreshing approach to Architecture and the role as an Architect. SDI logo_thin outline

Synectic Design, Inc. (SDI) is an architectural design and planning firm created in January 2000 with the idea of bringing together an intimate, carefully-selected group of individuals of diverse personality and specialization. The result is a unique blend of design excellence backed by technical expertise.

The size of the firm ensures that each project receives the full attention and stewardship of one of the two principals, Lance Baker and David Hamblen. Together they continue to create constancy of purpose for the improvement of their product and service. For this – and many other – reasons, they enjoy great loyalty from their clients in the commercial, private, government, and residential environments.

The structure of Synectic Design is tailored around serving their clients with a continuity of service. Unlike many larger firms that spread the work among many departments, they entrust each project to a project manager who shepherds the project through completion. They feel that having a knowledgeable, experienced staff helps deliver a coordinated and quality product.

Lance-Baker-MAC-and-BleuLance Baker, founding partner and principal of Synectic Design, has successfully completed many projects in the Federal, public, private and commercial markets. As an owner and designer, Lance participates in the design, documentation and administration for every project Synectic Design completes.

With 27 years of experience, Lance works closely with each and every client to ensure that he understands both their needs and their expectations. He prides himself on working together with clients, contractors and subconsultants to find solutions to the complex needs of each project. He is sincerely dedicated to actively leading the design team through all phases and participates in every major decision affecting successful project completion.

Lance graduated from Drury University in 1996 and is a licensed architect in 20 states; he’s a member of the American Institute of Architects, an NCARB certificate holder, and active in the Scottsdale Charros, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community through the promotion and support of education, youth programs and economic development.
