Rebecca Black has a dark past. She has lived many lives, from working for the Department of Child Welfare to teaching as an adjunct professor to volunteering with the Pima County attorney’s office for 6 years working with 88 Crime. She graduated from the FBI Citizen’s Academy in 2012 and has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. However, her life took an abrupt turn when she died–three times–on the ER operating table. She is a survivor, a BRCA1 previvor and suffers from PTSD as a result of an abusive childhood. In the midst of it all, she has found a physical connection and a spiritual purpose with a family of elephants.

Rebecca was born in Michigan but grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where she lives today with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. She loves the art–especially Gustav Klimt. She adores music–Tori Amos, Otis Redding, and Radiohead. She is an eclectic, fierce woman and is working on her second book.

Mary Reed has always been a nerd obsessed with ideas, and with art of creating things. She had a career in high tech, working as a software manager for Apple, University of Chicago, Novell, and the phone company (back when there was just one).

After being shot three times in the Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting in 2011, she decided to pour her energy into leading TEDxTucson.* She believes that Tucson is a magical place: innovative, creative, kind, and underestimated. She works with her team of professionals (who volunteer their time) to create an amazing, immersive conference where live speakers share unique ideas from this region. All speakers and entertainers take part on a no-fee basis.

Since she took over this license from TED, TEDxTucson has become an Arizona powerhouse:  creating a library of 100 videos with over 5.6 million views.

Jessica Badowski is the owner and founder of Tucson based Too Busy Gals. Too Busy Gals was established in 2008 in Ohio and moved to Arizona in 2011. It was established as a business to the business service provider after multiple requests for assistance with social media, branding, and marketing from peer business owners. After 20+ years in non-profit management and anti-poverty social work, Jessica decided to break out and start her own business. In 2008, it became quickly apparent the need for high-quality education and coaching social media services was exploding. After 3 years working with national partners in marketing and social media, Too Busy Gals began developing its own roster of clients. Jim Grasham is a retired, 42-year veteran of the Arizona Fire Service and a member of the Arizona Fire Service Hall of Fame.  He is also a Vietnam-era military veteran serving in the U. S. Air Force from 1965-1969.  Jim was born and raised in Gary, IN.  He joined the U. S. Air Force in June 1965 and it was during his military service that he ended up in Tucson.  He is married to Susan and they have 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.  Jim and Susan will be celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary in December 2019.  Jim currently enjoys the outdoors, playing golf, fishing, and supporting local firefighters and their families.  In his younger days, he enjoyed playing and coaching baseball, men & women’s fastpitch softball, basketball, and football.  

  Jim joined the Tucson Fire Department in July 1969 immediately following his honorable discharge from the military.  He progressed through the ranks and became an Assistant Fire Chief before retiring after 28-plus years of service.  Jim joined the Northwest Fire District as their Fire Marshal/Division Chief in 1997 and also served as the District’s Health & Safety Officer and Special Projects Chief until he retired in 2010.  Although it was not a childhood dream, being a firefighter turned into a career that he was passionate about even to this day.  Jim continues to work with area fire departments and non-profits by writing grants, and participating in various fundraising activities including the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation’s Fiesta de los Bomberos – Feast & Fairways Event.  

A major goal of the NFFF & GTFF is to reduce firefighter line of duty deaths.  More specifically, deaths caused by heart attacks, cancer, and suicide.  Heart attacks are responsible for nearly half of all line-of-duty deaths.  Cancer is rapidly growing and is projected to become the leading cause.  More firefighters commit suicide than are actually dying fighting fires.

  Challenges include getting all firefighters, career & volunteer, in shape to be able to perform the rigorous physical demands of the job.  Providing adequate protection for firefighters to address cancer concerns.  Getting firefighters to get checked for various cancers and then following through on treatment.  Overcoming the stigma and barriers of seeking mental health counseling for post-traumatic stress, depression, and other pressures caused by the daily exposure to traumatic situations involving illness, death, and injuries, especially to young children.

Rick was born in NYC and grew up in suburban New York. Following graduation from the University of Denver’s Film program, he was invited to join the prestigious Director’s Guild of America in L.A.

Although this represented a tremendous opportunity, it required working in a highly structured Union environment, Rick reluctantly declined the offer, and in Summer of 1976, headed towards Tucson, where he had previously filmed the Tucson Rodeo for NBC.

Within a short period of time, Rick was appointed by Mayor Lew Murphy as Vice-Chairman of the Tucson Film Commission under Old Tucson Studios founder Bob Shelton, and he remains the youngest member ever appointed to the Commission.

Rick’s film and television credits literally fill three pages (with really small type), and the list keeps getting longer.

Highlights include: ‘The Global Arena,’ a film on the Lake Placid Olympic Games; ‘How Strong is the Wind,’ a documentary the definitive documentary work on the Wright Brothers; and ‘The Human Experiment,’ the story of the visionary Biosphere 2 project.

He’s also worked on shows like; ‘Three Amigos,’ ‘The Law at Rendado,’ ‘The Cellar,’ ‘The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper,’ ‘The Young Riders,’ ‘Desperado,’ ‘Portrait of America,’ ‘Little House on the Prairie’, ‘Highway to Heaven’, as well as literally hundreds of commercials, marketing, and video productions.

In 2011, Rick was chosen as the Advertising Federation’s ‘Advertising Person of the Year’, in 2014 he was given the AAF Silver Medal, and in 2016 he was inducted into the Advertising Federation’s Hall of Fame.

Rick is an avid golfer, a private pilot, a Rotarian, DM50 member and a Chairman’s Circle Member at the Chamber of Commerce. Dustin Williams is a lifelong Native Tucsonan.  He graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1992 and began working with local youth- coaching youth softball in the Frontier Little League- a job he maintained throughout his university studies. He entered the University of Arizona in 1992 and began studying business and accounting and considered joining his grandfather’s accounting firm.

Ultimately, Dustin’s coaching experiences lead him to the epiphany that he wanted to work educating Tucson’s youth thus inspiring him to change his major to Education.  While completing his degree in education at the University of Arizona he continued working with students and the community in Flowing Wells 21st Century after-school programs.  Dustin described his involvement in the program as, “truly the best way to get first-hand teaching experience.”

Dustin began his career teaching elementary education in Tucson. During his tenure, several accomplished leaders and administrators mentored Dustin and encouraged him to pursue his passion for education and explore his natural ability to lead and inspire students. Dustin followed his heart and decided to become an administrator and enrolled in the Northern Arizona University program in Tucson where he successfully completed a Master’s in Education.

Upon the completion of the program, Dustin accepted a position as Assistant Director of a Native American Charter school called Ha:san Preparatory & Leadership School. He accepted the position and began working to improve the school’s cultural diversity and academic test scores. In his first year as A.D., the school’s AIMS scores showed a 30% combined increase in the areas of reading and writing and an increase of 8% in mathematics. During his time at Ha:san, he truly learned about the beautiful culture of the Tohono O’odham people and will forever be grateful that the community embraced his leadership.

Dustin has traveled full circle and most recently taught 6th-grade math at Mansfeld Middle School in the Tucson Unified School District.  His passion for Public Education has energized him to take the next step in his life. Dustin Williams was elected the Pima County Superintendent of Schools and is excited about the future. He is committed to improving the public education systems throughout Pima County. Arlene has a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education with a Student Affairs concentration from the University of Arizona; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with a minor in Spanish from Arizona State University.

Arlene’s career in higher education began in 1996 as the senior regional coordinator for Northern Arizona University’s Office of Admissions in Tucson, where she was responsible for the recruitment of high school students from the southern region of Arizona. She then moved to The University of Arizona in the Office of Early Academic Outreach where she managed the Academic Preparation for Excellence program in 42 middle and high school sites serving over 2000 students. During that time, she was on the implementation team for two GEAR UP educational grants for the Dreams Come True (Amphitheater School District) and Building the Future (Tucson Unified School District) college preparation projects.

Currently, Arlene is serving as Executive Director for the Metropolitan Education Commission, where she oversees operations and programming; and works alongside government, educational, business and community leaders to advocate for a quality and affordable education from pre-school to post-secondary; and offer programs that promote youth leadership, civic engagement, workforce development, and higher education pathways.

Greg D’Anna is the Director of Public Relations for the Pima County Joint Technical Education District (JTED). For the past 11 years, he has helped build Pima JTED’s brand in Southern Arizona, sharing student and teacher success stories, as well as program information, during live presentations, in printed publications, and on the web. Greg started his career in public relations and marketing 32 years ago. He has worked for the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Pima Community College and the Sunnyside School District. He and his wife Lori are both native Tucsonans. Greg earned his degree in Journalism, Media Arts, and English at the University of Arizona.

A native Tucsonan, Michael Guymon’s twenty-one-year professional career has primarily centered on political strategy, business development and advocacy, and organizational management. As Vice President for the Tucson Metro Chamber, Michael is responsible for developing and implementing the Chamber’s local public policy and workforce development/attraction programs and initiatives.

Michael’s previous positions include Vice President of Regional Partnerships for Sun Corridor Inc.; Executive Director of Metropolitan Pima Alliance; Chief-of-Staff to Tucson City Council Member Fred Ronstadt; Asst. Vice President for Governmental Affairs for the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce; and political consultant to The Bridges, a 360-acre mixed-use, infill development that will include Tech Parks Arizona, GEICO’s regional headquarters, housing, and a 111-acre commercial development.

Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Arizona.
