Cheerleading is getting more and more popular as a recognized sport. Now you can watch cheerleading competitions on ESPN and in the movies. This recognition has helped grow the sport but it has also increased the injury factor as well. As teams become more competitive they perform riskier and riskier routines in order to stand out in the judges eyes. Cheerleaders are getting injured regularly and the cheerleader in the flyer role is getting hurt the worst. Here are some things to look for in a good, safe cheer team
- Emergency plan – ask what the emergency safety plan is and how it would be implemented
- Medical exams – make sure they insist that each child gets a medical exam prior to joining team
- Qualified coaches – background checks on the coaches along with checking references from past employment is always a good idea
- Certification – National cheerleading certifications are also good guides to a reputable team
