Dr. Jeffrey Garrett, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, joined The Longstreet Clinic (TLC) in early 2015. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Garrett attended medical school at East Carolina University, completing his residency at Wake Forest University and a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at Tampa General Hospital. His specialty is joint replacement, specifically hip replacement. Margaret Spratlin, a native Georgian, has been in the medical profession her entire career and joined TLC in 2014. Both acknowledged that TLC’s strong leadership of CEO Mimi Collins, and their centralized administration allow the physicians and health care practitioners “focus on the patients, not paperwork”.
A new innovated surgical procedure, anterior approach hip replacement, has Dr. Garrett very excited about post-operative outcomes. This procedure inflicts far less trauma to the large muscle groups which greatly improves the recovery time. Many patients are up walking within 24 hours of the surgery and home the next day. Dr. Garrett says, “Patients just recover better if they are in their own home and surroundings!” Though the idea of being discharged so soon after major surgery can be scary, Dr. Garrett believes that it’s really the fear of the unknown that has to be addressed. “It’s an educational process; speaking in a language that is easily understood. Don’t be afraid to talk with the doc.” Data suggests that the number of joint replacements will double in the next twenty years. Dr. Garrett and The Longstreet Clinic coupled with the anterior approach hip replacement procedure is well positioned “to deliver more efficient and high quality medical care in a changing environment.”
