His research has shown that spices are important for human health. Following a spice regimen he noticed improvements in his health, his athletic performance and so did others who did what he was doing. The top spices to curb inflammation are turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, ginger and licorice. Chili, garlic and turmeric are also good appetite suppressants and help you lose weight. There is a difference between culinary herbs and medicinal herbs – so get an experts advice before trying this on your own. Kids develop taste preferences before age 5 so make sure you get your kid to try a variety of ethnic and spice filled foods at an early age.  If you want to learn about the importance of spices in your own health please go to his website www.spicemd.com

First he says to take care of yourself first – like they say on airplanes – put your oxygen mask on before you put it on your kid. His holiday party tip was to make sure you are eating healthy when you are alone so you can splurge a little when you go out to holiday parties. But he said that you only get one trip through the buffet line. And eat your protein becuase that will make you feel full. Then go strong with the veggies. Also slow down while you eat which also will make you feel full. To learn more please go to www.dustinmaherfitness.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Rick Osbourne, a former Physical Educator who wants to help kids immunize themselves from obesity by coaching them how to do a pull up. He says that if you can do just one pull up then you will never be obese. Rick’s obesity prevention strategy happened kind of by accident. Once he discovered the relationship between the ability to do pull ups and obesity he put together a program that helps people build enough strength to do a pull up.  You start with assisted pull ups then slowly progress until you can do pull ups with out any assistance. He thinks the pull up test should replace BMI because it is easier for people to understand and quantify. Rick wants you to be Strong at Everything Weak at Nothing. So how many pull ups can you do? To learn more please go to www.pullyourownweight.net

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Laurie David, producer of the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient truth and author of the new book The Family Dinner – Great Ways To Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time (recipes by Kirstin Uhrenholdt). Laurie explained that dinner time is the number one place that family history is passed on. The food part of dinner can be almost anything – the key is sitting down together and spending time together. Some of her rules are: no cell phones or electronics at the table; no phones are answered during dinner; one meal for everyone – no special orders; and everyone tries and tastes everything. Have your kids get involved in the dinner process – from setting the mood, to helping prepare the meals to even cooking dinner as they get older.  Her book gives families tools to have more meaningful moments – she has games, recipes, conversation starters and great anecdotes by families who do these things.  A game she plays at her dinner table is the “pet peeve” or “idiosyncrasy” – where everyone goes around the table to share their most annoying pet peeve or idiosyncrasy. She even shared some stories about her dinners with Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm creator Larry David. She explained that rituals like family dinners become that much more important when their is a family crisis like a divorce. This wonderful book is a must have this holiday season. You can find it at bookstores everywhere – go to www.lauriedavid.com for more information.
