On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Joe Puleo author of Running Anatomy. Joe is one of the top running coaches in the country – he has worked with runners from Rutgers University as well as the US Marine Corps. Joe shared some great tips to help runners run better and without injuries. He said that most new runners train too hard and try to run too fast. He said they would be better served if the took the tortoise hare approach of training slow and steady. He said runners should use  the same strategies that swimmers use when they train and spend a lot more  of their training time on perfecting their running form.  He talked about the barefoot running craze and had some great tips for new runners as well. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of the Fat Guy’s favorites…Top Secret Recipes author Todd Wilbur. Todd goes to the the top chain restaurants around the country and recreates their signature dishes. That’s right Todd clones your favorite recipes from your favorite restaurants and put them in recipe cookbooks. So you can make them at home for a lot less money than it costs to go to the restaurant and eat there. The Fat Guy makes his ribs using the Tony Roma rib recipe in one of  Todd’s early cookbooks.  He’s got a test kitchen in Las Vegas where he recreates your restaurant favorites. Todd said he brings home the dish then sifts through the meal in order to figure out what is inside. We had a bunch of these cookbooks to giveaway but they went in record time. Steve is a pioneer in using exuberant, joyful play to promote resiliency in children and a leader in the field of psychological trauma response. He is committed to the healthy development of children facing the most difficult circumstances. Steve started Project Joy in order to help spread the power of optimism and joy to Boston’s poorest children.  He thinks that in order to change the way we see the world we have to make every environment more playful. After awhile he joined forces with his childhood friends at Life is Good. Today Steve is the Chief Playmaker at Life is Good and runs this part of their non-profit foundation. She shared lots of fitness tips to avoid injuries and improve performance – for example she said that lunges and squats when done properly are the two best exercises to improve your glutes. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Ashley Johnston who was the runner up on Biggest Loser Season 9. She entered the couples show with her mother Sherry. Ashley talked about her 200 pound weight loss she achieved during the show. And she has keep it off and is moving closer to her goal weight by exercising and eliminating fast food. She shared that she used to always look towards food whenever she got stressed but now she exercises to release the stress and to burn some calories rather than consume calories. Ashley also talked about what goes on behind the scenes in the Biggest Loser TV show. She says she met her boyfriend on the show – this show has a better success rate in matching couples than the Bachelor or Bachelorette shows.  Since Ashley lived on the ranch for over 6 months she had lots of stories about Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper. Ashley said that changing her thinking was the key to her weight loss success. This dynamic mother daughter team is appearing Oct 1-2 at the Chattanooga TN Healthy Living Expo.  They are hosting the What If I Can  Workshop that includes fitness workouts, medical information and emotional support. But Chef Rock spent most of the time talking about his new book 44 Things to Know About Healthy Cooking For Kids. He had great tips for parents like: how to read labels, how to pay attention to your kids lunch box and what they eat for lunch each day, the importance of preparing and having availble at home healthy snacks for your kids after school, how it’s okay to indulge once a week but not everyday, how to flavor foods without salt and butter, why you should be taking your kids to farmer’s markets and to give your children variety.
