On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Healthy Skeptic Robert J Davis PhD. Robert is an award winning health journalist whose work has appeared on CNN, PBS, WebMD and the Wall Street Journal.  He debunked all those myths about sunscreen. Robert explained that there is a lack of FDA regulation of  sunscreen. So there are very often misleading claims on the the sunscreen packaging.  He shared tips on which sunscreens are safe and which are a rip off. He also explained that any sunscreen over 30 spf is pretty much overkill. According the Consumer Reports the best sunscreen is a brand from Target not one of those expensive designer brands. Instead of relying on sunscreen to protect you – go old school and wear a hat and cover up, stay in the shade and wear black. To learn more about bogus health claims please buy his book The Healthy Skeptic. Cutting Through The Hype About Your Health on Amazon and go to his website www.everwell.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Pete Thomas from the Biggest Loser TV show. Pete did such a great job living this new healthy lifestyle that the morning after the competition ended he went out for a 90 minute run. And when he came back the other contestants asked him if he ever turns it off – and he said he doesn’t because an active lifestyle is now just part of his daily life.  Pete walked away from the show $100,000 richer because he lost the most weight out of all the contestants that season. The amazing things about that weight loss success story is that he lost 123 of the 185 pounds while working out on his own. When he was voted off the ranch he knew that he had all of the tools to lose the weight on his own and sure enough he did. Pete also gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of the Biggest Loser TV show – he shared some stories about fitness trainer Jillian Michaels and he revealed that the contestants are put through a vigorous training regimen for weeks prior to filming the shows – we’re talking 4 hours of exercise 6 days a week for weeks so they can get in good enough shape to do the activities on the show. After going through this experience Pete feels that there has to be a different weight loss plan for people who are extremely overweight – he said that the weight has to come off fast in order to keep the obese person motivated so he has written a book titled Lose Big to help those people who are extremely overweight. To learn more about his amazing weight loss success story please go to his website www.winningman.com

Lisa has been working with kids for years and is the medical correspondent for Good Morning America. She has seen 300 pound 12 year olds and 140 pound 4 year olds. She says kids are getting diseases that were only found in middle aged and seniors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.  Lisa has just helped write the new book Eat! Move! Play! A Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy Happy Kids featuring 75 recipes tested by moms and kids. The book explains how your personal relationship with food and exercise as a parent affects your child’s perception of what is a healthy lifestyle. By the end of reading the book you will have the skills and the tools to create and sustain a fit household. Lisa shared some great weight loss tips for keeping kids healthy and in shape like: the importance of giving kids a variety of foods to taste and try; teach your kid what a proper portion size really is; learn what it feels like to feel full and then stop eating; how to deal with picky eaters; how to eat together as a family; by limiting your child’s time in front of the TV, computer and other screens you will invariably increase their time moving and playing.  To learn more about the book go to www.weightwatchers.com or order online at Amazon.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Michael Lipowski with Pure Physique – he is also the President of the International Association of Resistance Trainers. Mike also was the trainer for the winner of Mens Fitness Magazine’s Fat to Fit Challenge in 2009. Mike has written a book Pure Physique: How to Maximize Fat Loss and Muscular Development. Mike shared some of his best resistance training tips. Mike says your goal should be to get the best results by performing the least amount of exercise. You can do this in 30 minute workouts if you really focus your level of effort – your intensity. When you get to the point where you can’t budge the weight with your greatest effort and perfect form then you have reached momentary muscle failure and you are ready to move on. A key factor in staying compliant to any exercise or weight loss program is finding an outside source of leverage – this could mean an upcoming wedding, high school reunion or anything else that motivates you. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened with Andrew Wood with Muve. His company has created a device called The Gruve which is a positive feedback activity based wellness solution to monitor and increase your activity and help you lose weight. You wear the Gruve on your waistband of your pants and it records all the activity you are doing throughout the day. You then plug it into your computer and you can literally see a minute by minute graph of your daily activity. The Gruve is based upon the work of Dr James Levine’s non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT.  They created this device because one of the main differences between fat people and thin people is that thin people move more throughout the day than fat people do. And we are not talking about thin people exercising like crazy and running marathons they are just moving around more. Created with help from the Mayo Clinic the Gruve encourages and tracks all of your movement – in accordance with the NEAT method of exercise and weight loss management. It actually vibrates when you are sitting around too long in order to encourage you to get off your butt and move a round a little bit. During their research in creating the Gruve they discovered that Gruve users increased their activity behavior and that caused a drop in their blood pressure and blood lipid levels along with weight loss.  To learn more about getting your Gruve on check out their website www.muve.me
