On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Steve Bordley  to discuss his TrekDesk. Steve says that he was recently nominated for an award for his desk at CES. This amazingly large workspace is 72″ x 34″ and fits over the treadmill that you already own that is gathering dust in your garage.  According to Dr Fitness this will change the way you work. In his perfect world workers will move from cubicles to treadmill desks like the TrekDesk. Steve explained that by walking at a slow 1 mph pace all day long you can burn a significant amount of calories. For example sitting down burns about 15 calories an hour – standing burns about 50 calories an hour and walking at 1 mph can burn over 100 calories an hour. And at that non-strenuous slow pace you barely even notice you are doing anything – you’re not tired or sweating. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on cardiovascular surgeon and certified fitness trainer Dr Averel Snyder. Dr Snyder is one of the few heart surgeon’s who also is a certified fitness trainer. He coaches his patients on the health benefits of strength training and vigorous cardiovascular exercise as part of their treatment. Dr Snyder explained the health benefits of getting your heart rate elevated through interval training in order to improve aerobic capacity and weight training. He also recommended some supplements like fish oil. He also had an interesting take on hormone replacement therapy for men. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Tara Costa, The Biggest Loser Season 7 finalist who lost over 150 pounds on the show. She also won a record setting 8 challenges, the most of any contestant in show history. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Matt Brzycki, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Fitness at Princeton University. Matt explained the dangers of weight lifting on swiss exercise balls, how to read supplement labels and the benefits of drinking chocolate milk after you work out.  We have talked about the dangers of working out with weights while laying on a swiss exercise ball but the message is not getting through – an NBA player hurt himself when the ball burst as he was pressing weights while on the ball. The balls may say they can’t burst but if you put enough weight on them they can. Using supplements when you are a college or pro athlete can be dicey – the labels may not include any ingredients that are banned but during the manufacturing process banned substances can make their way in. A study Matt mentioned said that up to 15% of supplements had some form of steroids in them. And lastly we talked about the protein power in chocolate milk that is not in other sports recovery drinks. Matt’s new book on Youth Fitness can be found on Amazon.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend award winning health journalist Robert Davis, author of The Healthy Skeptic. Robert is kind of like the MythBusters guys for the health and fitness industry. Today he shared his thoughts about anti-aging clinics and their controversial human growth hormone programs. Robert and Dr Fitness discussed the recent NY Times article profiling Cenegenics, a popular anti-aging clinic. These kind of clinics take advantage of the law that says growth hormones can be legally prescribed if there is a deficiency in the patient – but as you age your levels decrease naturally so a doctor can almost always show that the patient is deficient. These clinics usually tout some anecdotal evidence of success and downplay some of the side effects of using hgh or human growth hormone, testosterone, etc. Side effects which can range from joint pain to diabetes. If you are considering using these kind of anti-aging methods please learn from the women who used hormone replacement therapy. While that therapy was used for decades it wasn’t until recently that results revealed that the risk of stroke and cancer outweighed any benefits of the treatment.
