On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with award winning science journalist Gary Taubes, author of the controversial book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Fats, Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! His mostly protein based eating plan is a favorite of Atkins and South Beach diet lovers like Jimmy Moore with Livin La Vida  Low Carb www.livinlavidalowcarb.com . You can find Gary’s book on Amazon and in bookstores everywhere.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Dr Sandy Venditti, Canada’s favorite dentist. Dr Venditti explained the importance of good dental hygiene and shared some great health tips from her new book Pearls of Wisdom.

Dr. Venditti has been a practicing dentist for over 14 years and really looked beyond the gums and teeth of her patients. She witnessed the pain – the fear and confusion – behind their eyes.

She knew many of her patients didn’t need to be in her chair – that what she was treating was easily preventable.   As a traveling dentist, Dr. Sandy has treated patients of all ages and nationalities, and found the same problems, the same fears. Dr. Sandy is committed to educating her patients about gingivitis prevention. She says that a healthy body begins with a healthy mouth.

She believes that there is no good reason why three out of four adults over the age of 35 have gum disease and tooth decay remains the most common chronic condition among North American children.  She believes it is through education and counseling that we can begin to reverse these current statistics.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of Dr Fitness’ favorite authors. Dr. David Kessler. He is the former Commissioner of the FDA (the same guy who changed food labels and took on the tobacco industry)  and author of the bestselling book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. This book will change the way you look at food. In the book Dr Kessler cracks the code to why you overeat. He explains that the food industry has literally made it a science to figure out exactly what makes food so delicious and addicting. He calls these foods hyper palatable. These hyper-palatable foods have been engineered in food labs to actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave and want to eat more. Restaurants and food manufacturers combine fat, sugar and salt in cleverly delicious ways to make you want it more and more. They have come up with foods that have never existed before and that humans desire with such demand that many of these companies are multi-billion dollar money machines. Dr Kessler explains why you overeat and gives you some ways to stop. And stopping is not as simple as trying harder and having willpower because these foods change your brain chemistry much like drugs or nicotine does. In order to stop you have to treat your favorite trigger foods much like an alcoholic treats liquor. You have to avoid it and avoid the places it is served. And you can’t connect the food with emotional memories. Try to reward yourself and celebrate in other ways rather than eating and going out to restaurants.  To learn more please go to his website www.theendofovereatingbook.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Wendy Beckers with Yell At Your Fat.

Her story is very inspirational She said the reason why she decided she needed to lose weight started at a football game. She was 328 pounds, and had decided to take her father to an NFL game in Tempe.  While they were in line to get in, a man started choking on a hot dog.  No one was doing anything to help this guy — so she ran over to him as fast as she could and proceeded to give him the heimlich.  He was able to cough up the hot dog and she ended up saving him.  It was a surreal experience, and afterwards, she realized how precious life is.  And how silly it was to care so much for the life of a stranger, yet she didn’t care enough about her own life to do something about her weight.  That night, from the hotel room in Tempe, she and her my husband called Jenny Craig.  The next day, they started with the Jenny Craig Vegetarian plan, and lost a combined weight total of 231 pounds. Interesting development from losing weight:  she and her husband appeared in a national commercial for Jenny Craig– starring them with Valerie Bertinelli!

Check out her amazing weight loss story and hilarious podcast at www.yellatyourfat.com
