Marta is the founder of SobeFit Magazine and creator of the Montenegro Method. A big congrats to Marta’s husband who recently took Silver in a Masters Judo competition that was held here in Atlanta. Marta coached us up and has us ready to achieve our fitness and weight loss goal. We have lost over 25 pounds in total and are both highly motivated to lose weight now. Marta explained the benefit of adding strength training to our weight loss program to boost our metabolism and and really changing the shapes of our bodies. She said that we should make one small change and stick with that one until it becomes a habit then move on to the next small change. Marta also reminded us to vote for the Fittest Person. Stephanie is a community activist in the Oakland and Richmond California area and is the author of three books on crime prevention. She is launching a new program called Safe Kids Now and she explained how her Safe Kids Now program helps keep kids safe. Neighbor involvement is the key to the program and she spoke about some ways to engage your neighbors into the program. After all it is for everyone’s benefit to make the neighborhood safer. She said a simple way to get to know your neighbors is to walk the neighborhood and say Hi. She also said that playing in your yard is a great way for kids to get exercise and also meet your neighbors. She put to rest Dr Fitness’ fear of having his kid abducted when she explained that there are only about 135 kids abducted by strangers each year. She also said that ahving a relationship with the police in your area is a great investment of your time. Her books also help you deal with gangs, drug dealers and graffiti as well. Self Defense for Modern Times. He teaches the Revat Fitness technique. He shared some of his best self defense tips for women or the Fat Guy. Some people think that women need different self defense techniques than men – Ingo disagrees. Ingo thinks that surviving crime requires more mental toughness than physical abilities. Size, weight, conditioning and upper body strength don’t make the difference. Ingo says that lady like self defense and anti-crime gadgets offer unrealistic guarantees. His tips were great. Number 1 – never go to the floor or ground to fight back. Number 2 – never start wrestling or grappling with your attacker. Number 3 – target groin, eyes throat. Remember you only have a couple of seconds to react and your attacker is probably stronger than you so be proactive, look the guy in the eyes and take charge once you know a confrontation is inevitable. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Tim Harlan aka Dr Gourmet came on his regular segment to explain the role of carbohydrates in your diet. He talked Glycemic Index and told us about how his website and program helps. Dr Gourmet’s favorite carbs are legumes, he said that if you eat legumes 4 times a week, studies show that you could lower your risk for a heart attack by over 20%. He says that eating healthy and being healthy is all about balance. He said he thinks that the Atkins and South Beach diets are silly. He said that the glycemic index rating of a Milky Way bar is lower than that of rice – which do you think is healthier for you? Do you really think pork rinds are better for you than carrots? John gave us the inside scoop to one of Dr Fitness’ favorite gadgets from Apple and Nike. He has been using the Nike Plus for about a month to track his runs. But he doesn’t like to listen to music when he runs so be bought a wrist band that tracks his runs instead of his iPod. John said you don’t even have to buy Nike shoes to use this device you can just get a velcro pouch and put the little monitoring thingy into and put it on any shoe.
