In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to choose the right fitness program for you. Choosing an exercise program that fits is a little tricky. Most people don’t think much about it and just join a gym or they buy a treadmill. It is much better to choose an activity that you like to do rather than doing something that you think will whip you into shape. If you don’t really like to attend spin classes then you will probably quit at the first schedule conflict. So first get a doctor to check you out physically to get their blessing. Then pick something that requires you to move and fits your age and health.  And don’t jump right in -check it out first – go to a class or take the exercise equipment for a test drive. Debi Silber is a Registered Dietitian with a Master’s in Nutrition, a personal fitness trainer and a whole health and lifestyle coach. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Marta Montenegro with SobeFit magazine. So far Marta’s Montenegro Method has helped us lose over 20 lbs so far. As always she gave us some great weight loss advice and support. She explained that by making small changes and sticking with them until they become a habit before moving onto the next change will help us stay compliant and stick to our plan longer. She said that if we have reached a plateau we should change up our routine. That means we should increase the intensity or duration of our workouts or decrease the number of calories we are eating. She said it is not okay to binge on the weekends, if we are getting tired of eating the same thing day after day we should change up the foods but not increase the calories. She explained the importance of pre-planning. By always having a healthy snack with you you can resist the urge to go through a drive through or raid the vending machine. Some people, like Dr Fitness lack any natural rhythm. And when you watch the celebrities on Dancing with the Stars look so graceful you have to understand how many hours each day they are putting into learning those dance moves. So here are the tips…Focus on your balance and posture. Try line dancing first – that tends to be easier to follow and you can learn most line dances pretty quickly. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Desi Bartlett who has been teaching exercise, health and wellness for about 20 years. She has trained some celebrities like Alicia Silverstone and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. But her passion is helping moms get their bodies, and their fitness levels, back through yoga. She still teaches Mommy and Me Yoga, Pre and Post Natal Yoga and Mothers Living Fit classes in Los Angeles. But the big news is Desi is the host of Acacia’s  new Prenatal Yoga exercise dvd. Desi says that yoga is primarily for flexibility and that you should supplement yoga with some cardio and strength training. She also explained that yoga works great for women going through all three trimesters of their pregnancy but that it is important to do the yoga a little differently when you are pregnant. She also said that some instructors who have never been pregnant have a harder time adapting their exercise workouts to their pregnant clients becuase they themselves have never experienced being pregnant. Desi also shared some great tips about how to choose a yoga studio. She said to always talk to the manager and make sure the manager matches you up with an instructor or classes that meets your skill level and objectives.
