Donut Try This At Home…

June 21, 2011 by angishields

Scene: A break-room in a corporate office. It’s early, and employees are just starting to trickle in to begin their busy workday. Suddenly, a shrill, high-pitched shriek cuts through the early morning hustle and bustle…

Janice from Accounting: What’s the matter? I heard a little girl scream…

Jack: Ummmm… that was me.

Janice from Accounting: You?

Jack: Somebody brought a big box of donuts.

Janice from Accounting: So?

Jack: There’re still warm. See?

Janice from Accounting: How many have you touched?

Jack: Ummm… how many did you see me touch?

Janice from Accounting: What’s the big deal with donuts?

Jack: Think about it: they’re nothing more than refined sugar and flour, artificial flavors and partially hydrogenated oil that’s loaded with trans fats. There’s no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Janice from Accounting: They make me happy!

Jack: They’re evil… and this appears to be a job… FOR THE AMAZING DIETER-MAN!

Janice from Accounting: You can’t change clothes in the break-room, Jack!

Jack: No time to argue right now! I need to… crap! I thought I was wearing my Amazing Dieter-Man pants underneath my slacks…

Janice from Accounting: What are you supposed to be anyway?

Jack:

I’ll tell you, Janice from Accounting!

Dieter-Man, Dieter-Man
Eats whatever’s on his dieter plan.
Prepares a meal, real low-cal.
He is really losing it, pal.
Cook Out!
Here comes the Dieter-Man.

Is he committed?
It’s no jive.
He’s got radioactive drive.
Can he jog on the road?
He’s in super-exercise mode.
Hey, there
There goes the Dieter-Man.

During the course of the day,
He shows grit and determination.
He avoids the buffet.
He can fight off any temptation.

Dieter-Man, Dieter-Man
Hungry neighborhood Dieter-Man.
Cake and pie,
He’s ignored.
Losses are his great reward.

He leaves food on his plate, boss.
Whenever there’s a weight loss,
You’ll find the Dieter-Man.

Stupid Skinny Intern: Why’s that guy standing on the table? What’s wrong with him?

Janice from Accounting: I don’t know where to start…

Stupid Skinny Intern: Donuts? Cool!

Guest Post: Powerhouse

April 14, 2011 by angishields

So much emphasis is placed on the “core” these days, most people who exercise regularly today can tell you that by using their abdominal muscles, they will support their backs in exercise.  Pressed further, most people understand the relationship of good posture and that it is also necessary for good back health.  But how does a muscle group above the waist support a narrow column of bony vertebra that stack on top of one another?   In the Pilates technique we use Joe Pilates’ term, the “powerhouse.” The Powerhouse includes the abdominal, inner thigh, and hamstring muscles, a band of strength that wraps around the body like a cummerbund.  This term represents the muscle groups that keep the pelvis and spine in good alignment.

When a sapling needs support to grow straight, it is common to tie rope or wires from the trunk to stakes in the ground to help it grow up.  The muscles that attach to the pelvis assist in much the same way.  However in our bodies we posses a set of muscles that pull our pelvis up in the front, up in the back, down in the front and down in the back.  It is the balance of these muscles that are important in keeping us upright and unencumbered.

The rectus abdominus (six pack muscles), oppose the Rectus femoris (a quadricep), the Sartorius (a skinny muscle that begins at the top of the outside of our thigh and attaches at the end of the inner thigh), and the Tensor fasciae latae with their attachments on the crest of the hip.  Behind us the erector spinae (back muscles) and quadratus laborum pull up in opposition to the hamstrings.

Once those guide wires are in good placement, the trunk of that tree intrinsically has strength from the structure the bark gives it and the cells of xylem and phloem that give the tree its rings.  We have a ring of muscle that wraps from either side of the spine to the front of our bodies called the transversus abdominus and then we have our own built in cross wires called obliques.  The external obliques start from the midline of the various rib attachments to insert more laterally in the pelvis; and the internal obliques attach from the more lateral aspects of the ribs to insert down medially at the pelvis.  These muscles weave together on each side of our body in such a way that not only allow us to rotate around, but also hold the spine erect when tension is placed on each end of these muscles.  As discussed this tension comes from the guide wires that pull the pelvis up and down in the front and back of the body: a powerhouse of support that affects all of the parts of the body both above and below.

So, when you are aware of the abdominal muscles working to support the back do remind yourself  to lengthen your body when utilizing that abdominal strength.  Your spine and your waistline will thank you.

A cheat day. Jon Basso was getting tired of being constantly asked if  his clients could have a cheat day. So this former Jenny Craig owner and personal trainer has turned his back on healthy living and has built a burger emporium that caters to the overweight and the people who just don’t care about eating healthy.

He figures that if 60% of the population are still overweight despite the efforts of all the experts – maybe the experts are wrong in their approach to help people lose weight.  If you can’t beat them join them – his restaurant is the ultimate cheat day. He figures a person will not take losing weight seriously until they hit rock bottom and he feels his restaurant is the perfect place to hit rock bottom. So in his mind he is actually helping people lose weight by selling them the food they crave in an atmosphere that celebrates all things unhealthy.

The Heart Attack Grill, is a burger joint in Arizona (and soon all over the world) that lets 350 pound people eat for free, has waitresses dressed as naughty nurses and gives candy cigarettes to kids. They pride themselves on being politically incorrect at every turn. The good news is that while this place makes no excuses about being a high fat wonderland – they also use all natural products or pre-packaged products – everything is prepared on site. If you are ready to hit rock bottom in order to propel yourself to a healthier life then you can learn more about this temple of unhealthy eating at Jon’s website www.heartattackgrill.com

Becky’s Weight Loss Journey

January 31, 2011 by angishields

In January of 2009 I weighed over 220 lbs. I had been seeing a Doctor who prescribed weight loss pills and was diagnosed with a slight thyroid disordery.  I was able to lose 10 or so pounds with the pills, but I wasn’t exercising and I still had horrible eating habits so I wasn’t really making any progress.

That month I received the book “Making the Cut” by Jillian Michaels for my birthday. I am a huge fan of hers, but after reading the first few pages I realized that I had the wrong book.  “Making the Cut” is for someone who is trying to lose those last 20 or so pounds, and I knew I needed to lose more than that to get to a healthy weight.  So I went out and purchased her first book, “Winning by Losing,” and followed the program she lays out.  I was fortunate to have free access to a small gym about 5 minutes from my home, my parents friends owned it at the time, so I did the workouts every morning about 4 a.m., then went home, got the kids to school and went to work.  I used her nutrition plan as well. I knew how many calories I needed to burn, which I monitored with a Polar watch, and I knew how many calories I could eat in order to average a 2 pound weight loss every week.  The program in the “Winning by Losing” book was 12 weeks and I lost about 70 lbs during that 12 weeks, not usual I know but I was determined!

After the 12 weeks I was ready for Jillian’s second book, “Making the Cut” which is a 60 day program.  Again I followed this program to the letter and was able to lose an additional 15 pounds.  I finished the 60 day program in May of 2009.  During the months that followed I continued to exercise and eat right and in August of 2009 I signed up to run my first 5K.  I finished 3rd in my age group. After that I was hooked and have been running ever since.  I also earned my Personal Trainer Certification from N.E.S.T.A. in August of 2009, hoping I could help others do what I had done.

In September of 2010 I ran my first 1/2 Marathon in Nashville with a time of 1:51:44.  I used P90X and a running training program to get ready for that race.  Currently, I am training for the Knoxville 1/2 Marathon in April.  I am doing a 60 day program called Insanity as well as run workouts to prepare for this race.  My big goal for 2011 is to run my first full Marathon, but I want to do a couple more 1/2 Marathons first.

I could not have done any of this without the support of my family.  My husband is a great cook and made it so easy for me to eat what I was supposed to eat.  In fact, I do not enjoy eating out anymore because he makes my favorite dishes better than any restaurant that I have ever been to.

Also, my husband and kids have always been so supportive and understanding when I am off on a run or enter yet another race.

Thank you for your time and letting me share my story with you,

Becky Morgan

Do Structured Meal Plans Really Work to Lose Weight?

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how meal plans can help you lose weight. A funny thing happened when the Jenny Craig people funded a study to see if people who used a structured meal plan (like the one they sell) really helped people lose weight. It does. So now Jenny Craig wants insurance to cover plans like the ones they offer. Imagine getting free food – covered by insurance. The pros of structured meal plan are that you know exactly how many calories you are eating – so if you only eat those foods you will lose weight. The problem with these plans are that people like to go to restaurants and eat a variety of things and eventually people get bored eating these microwavable meals for every meal every single day. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
