On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Katie Bell, who leads Gallup’s well-being initiatives, including the
Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Each day (for 25 years) they will poll 1000 Americans and ask them questions about their life, their well-being and their health. This massive undertaking will create a database of health and well-being data that will provide government, business and healthcare leaders with a consistent metric to measure the health, wellness, and prevention needs of the US population. They have to call about 26,000 people each day to get their 1000 interviews. Some things they’ve learned so far are that Colorado is among the best states in terms of well-being and as Jamie Oliver discovered West Virginia scores among the lowest. In terms of jobs – park rangers have among the highest well-being scores while truck drivers and manufacturer line workers have among the lowest. Two good predictors of high school graduation in teens are 1-the belief that there is something better for them outside of high school and 2-having an adult in their lives who believes in them.
