On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Dr Gerard Musante from The Structure House in Durham NC. Dr Musante is a renowned clinical psychologist who founded Structure House in 1977 and understands firsthand the struggle faced by overweight people. He has devoted his life to developing and teaching the principles of behavior modification. Today his internationally respected weight control program has helped more than 30,000 people change their attitudes, perceptions and lifestyles with diet, exercise and education. He is also the author of The Structure House Weight Loss Plan. He shared some great weight loss tips and explained all that is happening on his new website. You can now go online and create a 28 day action plan so you can develop your own personal plan to lose weight. He also shared his thoughts on the Biggest Loser TV show and programs like that that encourage extreme diet and exercise. He feels on the plus side they inspire people who felt that it was impossible to lose large amounts of weight. But he feels a big negative  about those shows are that they downplay the dangers of extreme dieting and exercise and that they are not a good way to keep weight off for the long run. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy shares Dr Fitness’ favorite baked banana recipe. Healthy desserts can be tricky – so here’s one for banana lovers. Peel your banana and cut it lengthwise. Put it on a pan. Drizzle some olive oil then sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, raisins, and whatever else you like. Cover and bake for 10-15 minutes. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains the breast cancer risks for women. Cancer refers to any abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. One in 8 women get breast cancer. While the main risk factor is if someone in your family has or had breast cancer there are a few others as well such as: if you got your period at a very young age or if you are obese or live a sedentary life. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Leslie Bonci, sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Pirates. She is also the author of the new book Sports Nutrition for Coaches. On the show she shared some great nutrition tips for athletes and their trainers. Some of the common mistakes she said that trainers make with their athletes are not giving them enough information regarding how food and fluids can improve their performance. She says that since different sports have different metabolic demands that each athletes food and fluid requirements are different – so it is important to eat and drink for your needs. She also said that their is too much emphasis on protein consumption and not enough on eating carbohydrates. She isn’t a big fan of not eating before workouts then drinking protein shakes afterward. She says trainers also have to be aware of eating disorders in athletes especially those in weight class sports like wrestling and gymnastics. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Mitchell Yass, the author of the book Overpower Pain: The Strength Training Program that Stops Pain Without Drugs or Surgery. Mitchell is a licensed Physical Therapist and has spent years helping his patients avoid unnecessary drugs and surgery while freeing them from pain indefinitely. Mitchell explained that a lot of pain is caused by muscle weakness or muscle imbalance and that the right exercise can make your pain disappear. He said a lot of chronic pain is misdiagnosed as acute pain.  He says that most doctors rely on x-rays or MRI’s for their initial diagnosis which then leads to an improper diagnosis and treatment plan. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Heather Harvey creator of the Measure Up Bowl. Heather shared her story about how she created this innovative weight loss product. She had gained some weight during her pregnancy that she was having trouble getting rid of. So a nutrition coach suggested she should measure and weight the foods that she ate. So Heather figured out a clever way to measure foods you put into bowls. And by the way, she lost about 80 pounds. The Measure Up bowl is one of those product that once you see it you think, why didn’t I think of that – it is so obvious. The Measure up Bowl has subtle lines telling you how much you are putting into each bowl in quarter and half cup increments. You will not find a better product to control your portion sizes. Especially with cereal. Heather did a great job with the design and quality. These bowls are dishwasher and microwave safe.
