Burkard RosApril is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, so in keeping with our tradition, we are joined by two return guests this morning to discuss what’s happening in Atlanta to raise awareness, raise funds, search for a cure, and support  families struggling with the disease.  In particular, don’t miss the APDA’s annual golf tournament being held on April 28 at the Smokerise Country Club in Stone Mountain.  There are still spaces for both players and sponsors!

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Lynn Ross attended Auburn University, earning a degree in interior design.  After getting married, Lynn moved to Valdosta with her husband.  There she found a job as the Activities Director for a skilled nursing facility, and absolutely loved it.

Finding she had a knack for working with seniors, she decided to enroll in Valdosta State University’s new Masters program in Social Work.  In 2001 she was part of the second graduating class, with only 30 other students!  A year later, in 2002, Lynn moved to Atlanta, and continued to work as an Activities Director at an assisted living facility.  This work led her to a position as a geriatric social worker for an elder law attorney.  Six years ago, today, Lynn became the first social worker in Emory University’s Department of Neurology Movement Disorders Program.

Lynn is very passionate about her work with Movement Disorders.  Though her work covers seven different movement disorders, Parkinson’s Disease is the most common.  To that end, Lynn is also the coordinator for the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s information and referral center.  To find out more about the Movement Disorder Program at Emory University’s Neurology Department, or to reach Lynn directly, call her at 404-728-6300, or call the Parkinon’s Resource Hotline at (404) 728-6552.

Eric Burkard is a life insurance agent who specializes in long-term care funding solutions.  He has helped hundreds of individuals look forward to retirement without jeopardizing their financial security or having to be a burden to their families due to unexpected events affecting life and long-term health.  Eric earned his Bachelors degree in Psychology from the SUNY at Buffalo, and his Masters degree in International Management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.  Eric lived in Venezuela for many years and is fully fluent in Spanish.

One of Eric’s passions is raising awareness and funds for research and family resources for those individuals and their families suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.  To that end, Eric is the Georgia Chapter President of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).  In addition to the upcoming golf tournatment, The Georgia Chapter of the APDA wants you to put October 11 on your calendar for their fabulous Skyline Gala, to be held again at the Nelson Mullins Skydeck at Atlantic Station.  For more information about both events, go to www.apdageorgia.org, or call Eric directly at (770) 777-5988.  Eric can also be reached via email at eburkard@earthlink.net, or visit his website at www.burkardinsurance.com.

Every person that has ever spent a day as an in-patient in a hospital has experienced a care transition.  And every person that has stayed in a hospital in the last several years has seen changes in the way in-patient stays and discharges are handled.  One in six of Medicare beneficiaries discharge from a hospital were readmitted within thirty days during 2009.  More than 1/3 were readmitted within 90 days.  In 2009 alone, the cost to taxpayers for unplanned readmissions was more than $19 billion!

The good news is that these unplanned readmissions can be drastically reduced by observing some fairly simple guidelines for post-discharge care.  Join Sam and Brad as they discuss Griswold Home Care’s approach to Care Transitions, and explore what other organizations are doing to help keep discharged patients safe and healthy in their own homes.  For more information about care transitions, please contact Sam or Brad at (770) 908-0707, or send and email to brad@gscatlanta.com, or sam@gscatlanta.com.

Ben Jackson was 28 years old when he received his Parkinson’s diagnosis.  To say that this was devastating and life-changing at such a young age would be the understatement of the year.  Married, with a young daughter, Ben has battled the disease for 8 years.  Now 36, he is an active advocate for Parkinson’s research and awareness.

On the other end of the spectrum, Carl Wilhelm had just completed a long and fruitful career as an ordained minister, a missionary to Ecuador for 15 years, and more than 25 years as a Shepherding Pastor for Perimeter Church.  Ten years ago, looking to retire and spend more time with his family, he also received the Parkinson’s diagnosis.  His world changed overnight.

Listen in as both Carl and Ben share their stories – about how they went from grieving, and even anger, to acceptance, to active participation in using their experiences to help other families deal with their own diagnoses.  These men have faced their own personal struggles to discover a new mission serving others in a way they never expected.  Carl runs a Parkinson’s Support Group twice each month at J. Christopher’s in Duluth, and Ben is also an active member.  To get more information, contact Carl via email at carlw@perimeter.org.  To contact Ben directly, email him at bendjax@gmail.com.

“Show Me”!  Amy Hentschel is a Show Me Girl!  Born and raised in Missouri, Amy believes that actions speak louder than words.  Drawn to serving seniors at an early age, Amy spent many hours during her high school years volunteering in hospitals and with hospice.  After earning a degree in Communications and Mass Media from the University of Missouri, she took a job with Medicare provider and equipment distributor in Illinois.

After moving to Atlanta and working for a number of years with an assisted living community, Amy began planning a new business that would provide support, advice and resource to the seniors she’d become so attached to.  Senior Provisions is an organization dedicated to assisting seniors and their families in evaluating their needs, and finding solutions to meet those needs, whether in their current home, or in a new environment.  Her services are free to her clients.  She provides expert guidance in the areas of senior living options, adult day programs, skilled nursing options, Alzheimer’s care, non-medical home care, support groups and financial/legal services.

Amy tells us that her business is also her mission.  While she provides high quality professional services, she is also their to minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of her clients.  To that end, she hosts a monthly Caregiver group focused on providing this kind of support and assistance to family caregivers – whether they are hands on with a family member, or supporting from a distance.  Amy’s next Caregiver Meeting will be held this Saturday, February 23, from 10am to 11am, at the Sunrise at Johns Creek located at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road.  Brian Byars, a certified VA claims advisor, will be speaking.  To register for this event, or find out more about Senior Provisions, please call Amy directly at (678) 925-0223, or visit their website at www.myseniorprovisions.com.

Return guest, Jeff Smythe discovered early on that he wanted to spend his life and career helping people.  While in college, he spent time with WorldTeach in Costa Rica.  Upon return and graduation from college, Jeff moved from Denver to Atlanta.  He started working with OpenHand Atlanta, and went on to earn a Masters in Public Administration from Georgia State University.  About 10 years ago, Jeff began working for Senior Citizen Services, now Meals on Wheels Atlanta,(www.MealsOnWheelsAtlanta.org).  Now, as the Executive Director of the organization, Jeff takes pride in the fact that the organization serves more than 100,000 meals per year through its Meals on Wheels program, and provides home repair for literally hundreds of Fulton County citizens each year.

Jessica Gill has never held a job that didn’t involve serving seniors!  Growing up in Connecticut, she spent time in school visiting nursing homes.  While doing that, she also learned to square dance.  As a result of that experience, she developed a passion for the senior community.  She went on to school at University of Southern Connecticut, earning a Masters in Public Health, and then to Boston University, where she received a certificate in Gerontology.  Upon graduation, Jessica took a job with the CDC, and was ultimately transferred to Atlanta.  She is also a certified geriatric care manager, and has spent time working with the Area Agency on Aging, as well as working as a geriatric care manager in private practice.  Today she works for Sunrise Senior Living as an Area Manager of Business Development. Part of her role with Sunrise is linking arms with like-minded organizations in the community.  Thus, Sunrise and Meals on Wheels Atlanta have come together to provide more than 300 Christmas Eve/Christmas Day meals for Atlanta’s most needy seniors.  To find out how you can donate or get involved, please contact either Jeff or Jennifer.  Here are their coordinates:

Jeff Smythe:  Phone – (404)-351-3889  Email:  jsmythe@mealsonwheelsatlanta.org

Jessica Gill:  Twitter @GillJJLL, Email: Jessica.Gill@sunriseseniorliving.com

To donate canned goods, blankets, CO2 or Smoke Detectors, simply drop them off at any of the 10 Atlanta Sunrise locations, but hurry – only 19 days to Christmas Eve!
