By including your family in your training you can have the best of both worlds. Do your short runs with your family. Beginners should test their fitness level before they start training in order to prevent soreness and injuries. And everyone should make sure they have good shoes. He began running in the Marine Corps and has completed 95 marathons and 15 ultramarathons – most without shoes. Matt is the author of A Barefoot Run Across North Carolina. That book talks about his 760 mile barefoot run across his home state. Learn more about Matt and his crazy runs at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/mattjenkins

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Carla Birnberg who answered a bunch of weight loss and fitness questions from our Twitter fans  and shared some of her best training tips. Here are some of the questions with answers – @fabfattieshan wanted to know proper running tip toes strike or heel – MizFit and Dr Fitness both said mid sole. @kwidrick wanted to know proper gym etiquette regarding correcting someone exercising incorrectly – answer is to not do it – unless you are considering asking them out but do give them a funny nickname.  Also wanted to know how MizFit motivates herself when she is not feeling motivated – Carla does it for her kid and Dr Fitness talks himself into doing it for just a couple of minutes which always turns into a full workout. @sugarwand wanted her thoughts on group exercise classes – Carla isn’t really into them but you should always pick out activities that you like and will do. @joannasutter wanted to know the self talk that Carla used to help her through her recent half marathon. Carla said her mantra was “I know I can F’n do this” and @dailykat asked the best way to integrate strength training into your routine – Carla said to make it fun and give yourself 6 weeks to see results. I’m sorry we couldn’t get to more of the questions but we ran out of time. To learn more about what she is up to go to www.mizfitonline.com

Are You Making This Common Marathon Training Mistake?

Are You Making This Common Marathon Training Mistake?

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the most common marathon training mistake and how to deal with it. The most common mistake when training for a marathon or half marathon is to not go for a long run each week? Remember, it usually takes 3 to 4 months to train for a marathon or other long endurance race. You need to experience what it feels like to be running for a long period of time – it’s going to take 2-4 hours to run the race. That is a long time to be alone with yourself without talking. You also have to acclimate yourself to the weather and the time of day you’ll be running. The best way to do those long runs are to have someone drop you off 15-20 miles away from you house and run home rather than run a loop that starts from your house then gets you home again. And do these long runs at the same time of day the race will be held if you can. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
