The Future of Fitness with Scott Marsh E18

In this episode, co-hosts Jennifer Burwell and Kyle McIntosh interview Scott Marsh, resident fitness trainer at MAC6 and owner of Mind & Body Strengthening about how to kick start your fitness program for the new year. We learn about Scott’s unique background growing up on a farm and how that has translated to a strong work ethic and helping nature he applies to his practice. He encourages listeners to pick just one small thing to take the first step. He also talks bout the changes in federal wellness guidelines and the impact of technology on the fitness industry.

During this episode, our listeners will learn more about Scott Marsh and how Mind & Body Strengthening can help you meet your fitness goals. We will also unpack a few ways to get moving as we work from home and what to think about if creating a home gym.

Scott-Marsh-on-Phoenix-Business-RadoXScott Marsh is the Founder and Owner of Mind and Body Strengthening which is the culmination of working in the Physical Therapy and Fitness Industry for 26 years. ABOUT YOUR CO-HOSTS

KyleMcIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6.  Day to day, his main operational role is on the “spaces” side of the business, focusing on creating thriving communities in the commercial office buildings, the co-working space, and the co-manufacturing space.  The other role that he plays is that of EOS implementer, working with clients to bring the Entrepreneurial Operating System, from the book Traction® to their businesses.  Additionally, he sits on the boards of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona, and The Tempe Chamber of Commerce, sustaining Tempe’s quality of life and keeping our community and economy vibrant. Scott-McIntosh-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXFollowing an early career focused on underground mining engineering, operations and construction, Scott McIntosh grew McIntosh Engineering to become a preeminent worldwide engineering, design and project management firm focused on providing deep underground mining services to large international mining companies.  After growing to $50+ million in annual revenue and 280 worldwide employees, McIntosh Engineering was acquired in 2008 and Scott began his exploration for what’s next.

What’s next is Advocating Capitalism as a Force for Good through MAC6 and Conscious Capitalism Arizona (CCAZ).

  • MAC6 builds better communities where people and businesses thrive.  Founded by Scott and his son Kyle in 2011.  Current operations include a 10,000 ft2 state of the art Conscious Workspace, 50,000 ft2 of quiet occupancy office space, and a 38,000 ft2 light manufacturing facility in support of early stage businesses that adopt the principals of Conscious Capitalism to achieve long term sustainable growth.
  • Conscious Capitalism Arizona was founded by Scott in 2012 as the 3rd Chapter in the world, following only Chicago and Australia.  Now CCAZ is part of a truly global movement with 40 total chapters including 10 international locations.

Conscious Capitalism Arizona (CCAZ)

We believe that free enterprise capitalism has served to lift more people out of poverty than any other socio-economic system ever conceived – empowering social cooperation, human progress, and elevating humanity.  Globally, Conscious Capitalism is an idea, a movement, an approach to conducting business and an organization dedicated to advancing all of these. Conscious Capitalism exists to elevate humanity.

The future of business in Arizona lies with an upcoming generation of consumers, business leaders and employees preparing to make a difference in the world.  We (CCAZ) are passionate about giving them the tools and principles they will need to become the generation that eliminates poverty and elevates humanity. Conscious Capitalism Arizona is working with business and academic leaders to:

  • Create a library of over 1,000 stories of business as a force for good.

THINK-FIT-GETFIT-STAYFIT-Luke-SullivanLuke Sullivan moved to Arizona in 2006 to pursue his dream of making the 2008 Olympic team as a discus thrower. Injuries ultimately hampered his training so, despite qualifying to compete at the 2008 Olympic Trials, Luke chose to listen to his body and prevent further damage. After dedicating 20 years to training and competing, Luke officially retired from competitive discus throwing in June, 2008.

Next, He focused solely on changing people’s lives through fitness. Using the success he created from transforming personal-training clients of all body types, Luke launched Pinnacle Fitness in 2010. He has built Pinnacle Fitness into one of the premier movement education and corrective exercise gyms in Scottsdale. The foundation for the gym was built from the injuries Luke sustained while competing in track and field. Developing techniques to rehab his own body with no surgery, pain meds or invasive procedures. Luke now uses many of these methods with his clients and sees people’s lives change every day. Luke’s 20+ years of training have allowed him to work with all types of clientele. From athletes, to elderly, to post rehab and everywhere in between. He truly has a gift for connecting with people and putting all the pieces together to get clients in the best shape of their lives.

Fitness has always been a part of Luke’s life. As a teen, he was a three-sport athlete in his hometown of Verona, WI. He used his athletic abilities to earn a full scholarship to UCLA to compete on their Track & Field team, eventually being named Team Captain in 1999 and achieving All-American status four times during his collegiate career with the Bruins!

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS Heidi Jannenga with WebPT and Scott Marsh with Mind and Body Strengthening

With 30% market share, WebPT is the leading rehab therapy platform for enhancing patient care and fueling business growth. Operating under an overarching mission to empower rehab therapists to achieve greatness in practice, WebPT currently serves more than 80,000 rehab therapists, providing documentation, scheduling, billing, outcomes tracking, analytics reporting, lefferts201705044140patient relationship management, and system integrations.

WebPT’s mission has always been rooted in serving a deeper purpose and a higher vision—and that philosophy revolves around culture, people, and conscious leadership. In line with the tenets of Conscious Capitalism, the WebPT team believes in giving all stakeholders a voice—and considering them before making any important business decisions. This includes employees, customers, vendors, partners, and investors. WebPT focuses on the “we” instead of the “me”—and the executive team is integral to fostering this approach. With that in mind, WebPT leaders put forth a concerted effort to continually inspire, challenge, and collaborate with their team members in a highly visible, hands-on way. And it’s through their mission to serve a deeper purpose and their commitment to maintaining a people-first mentality that WebPT has achieved sustained growth and success.

Heidi-Jannenga-WebPT-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXDr. Heidi Jannenga, PT, DPT, ATC/L, is the Co-Founder and President of WebPT, the country’s leading rehab therapy EMR platform for enhancing patient care and fueling business growth. Since the company’s launch in 2008, Heidi has guided WebPT through exponential growth. Today, it’s the fastest-growing physical therapy software in the country, employing nearly 500 people and serving more than 75,000 therapy professionals at more than 12,000 clinics. WebPT has also ranked five consecutive times on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list and twice on the Inc. 500. Heidi has been recognized as one of Health Data Management’s Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT, an Entrepreneur of the Year finalist by Ernst & Young, a Most Admired Leader and Tech Titan by the Phoenix Business Journal, among other accolades.

Prior to co-founding WebPT, Heidi practiced as a physical therapist for more than 15 years. Today, she regularly speaks as a subject-matter expert at local and regional StandUp-1technology, entrepreneurship, and leadership events, as well as at national PT industry conferences.

Heidi serves on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Arizona Science Center, Support My Club, the Physical Therapy Political Action Committee (PT-PAC), the Institute for Private Practice Physical Therapy, Conscious Capitalism AZ Chapter, and the Arizona Community Foundation. She also dedicates time to mentorship within WebPT (through her women’s empowerment group PropelHer) and in the broader community (through her work with physical therapy students and local entrepreneurs).

Located in Tempe, Arizona, Mind and Body Strengthening offers cardio equipment by Matrix – treadmills, ellipticals, and recumbent bikes. They have a full Matrix functional trainer for weights. Their circuit weight training equipment includes leg curls, abdominal/low back, multi-press, lat pulldown, rower and more. They also have TRX training tools, an additional open fitness room, as well as two showers. Enjoy great facilities and equipment that are never crowded!

ScottMarsh1The New Warrior Program was inspired by helping one future sailor get “in shape” for boot camp. The goal was to have his body and mind prepared for the stresses that he would endure at bootcamp. As they went through six months of training, Scott and team helped him with exercise selection and form. A nutritional plan was also established. He was drinking more than enough soda each day. We asked for a commitment of no soda, sugar, or highly refined foods for the six months. He made the commitment and later stated feeling much better overall.

After shipping out to bootcamp, Scott knew he couldn’t be the only one who needs help. Scott went to the local Armed Forces recruiting station, where he explained his vision for the new program. Coincidentally they had a meeting later that same day with recruits and invited him to attend and speak with the future sailors. Scott explained what he was offering and that there was no cost to them. In the following weeks, the Marine and Army stations shared his vision. The meetings were well received and we have been moving forward with recruits. This is our way of showing appreciation for the amazing service these recruits will provide our country.

Please help support our New Warriors as they prepare to ship out to begin to serve our country and defend our freedoms.

The New Warrior Program is designed to prepare them physically and nutritionally for the demands that will be placed on them in bootcamp and beyond. There is no cost to the recruits to participate in the New Warrior Program. Your donations will go directly to our trainers, equipment and supplies needed by the recruits.

Scott-Marsh-Mind-and-Body-Strengthening-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXScott Marsh completed his BA in Physical & Health Education from Saginaw Valley State University in 1991. In 1994 he became certified as a C.S.C.S. ( Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) through National Strength & Conditioning Association(NSCA), which is the worldwide authority on strength and conditioning. The NSCA supports and disseminates research based knowledge and its practical application to help assess, motivate, educate, and train clients.

Upon graduating from SVSU he worked in an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic for seven years in addition to personal training. At the clinic he worked with patients to execute their exercise programs for their injury or trauma to the musculoskeletal system(muscles and bones of the body). This includes sprains, strains, post fracture, post surgery, repetitive injuries, and degenerative diseases, ie. degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis(degenerative bone disease), and arthritis(degenerative joint disease).

When a patient had completed their physical therapy they still need to continue to exercise and do their physical therapy exercises. Scott would design the home program based around their specific condition, needs and equipment available.

After Scott left the clinic to focus full-time on his Personal Training business, he has taken his experience and knowledge gained from the clinic to help his fitness clients reach their health and fitness goals with an injury free environment and proper form being the two most important criteria.

Scott has enjoyed helping people for the last 25 years reach their health and fitness goals and, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He has also started The New Warrior Program which is a fitness and ScottMarshnutrition program, at no charge to the recruits, prepare for bootcamp and beyond.

Throughout his career as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist he is required to renew his certification bi-annually. He does this by attending National conferences, Personal Training conferences, taking quizzes, and maintaining his CPR certification. He is a “information junky”. He is always reading the latest research and publications to stay current and up to date so his clients have the best programs to meet their individual needs.
