According to Lisa Meeks, owner of Senior Care Options, a geriatric care manager is a cross between a case worker and a daughter.  Beginning her career as a recreational therapist, Lisa watched her mother start a care management business in Chicago.  Twelve years ago, she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps when she opened Senior Care Options.  Lisa’s firm takes a team approach to each client.  This brings a wealth of experience to bear, including the skills of social worker, nurse and professional counselor.

Listen in as Lisa describes the value her team provides as they evaluate everything from in-home care options to care recommendations made during a doctor’s appointment.  It is clear that Lisa loves her work, and is committed to caring for every aspect of a client’s care.  To find out more about Lisa’s proactive, problem-solving approach, contact her at 770-579-9177, or visit her website at www.seniorcareopt.com.

Kennesaw native Chet Tischer began his career in real estate at the age of 14!  It started with Chet cutting a homebuilder neighbor’s lawn.  From there, he began doing odd jobs for the builder, and he never really stopped building homes.

After 25 years as a homebuilder, Chet, like many others found himself having to reinvent his business as the market for new homes evaporated a few years ago.  One day he was sitting around with his wife ruminating about the necessity of adding space to accommodate an aging parent.  Chet was already aware of the growing need for multi-generational living spaces.  Skeptical, at first, Chet set about creating the most complex senior living space he could imagine.  After many iterations, he has created a patented, modular, affordable and accessible living space for seniors or disabled adults that can be installed in a few hours inside a garage, or attached to any existing exterior doorway of your home.  These spaces come furnished with electrical and water hook-ups, heating, air conditioning and even high tech medical monitoring devices. Chet’s brainchild is being made available through his company,  BonusRuum.

Check out this fascinating interview, and look for an on-site broadcast some time in April, when BonusRuum will open up a warehouse in Marietta that will have a model room available for touring!  In the mean time, if you are interested in more information, check out their website at www.bonusruum.com, or call their offices at (770) 480-5676.

Hollie is a rare Georgia native!  She grew up in Monticello, then went to school in Macon.  She started her care in pharmacy, working with bubble packed medications.  This naturally led her to the senior services arena, where she worked in hospice for a number of years.  Nearly a year ago, Hollie took a position at Manor on the Square in Roswell.  When The Principal Group started building a new community in Alpharetta, Hollie was quick to jump on board!

The Benton House of Alpharetta is just about set to open.  Awaiting only an occupational license from the city, they are chomping at the bit to begin serving a growing list of residents that have already signed up to live in the beautiful new community of 55 ground level apartments.  A portion of this community will be designated the Beacon Neighborhood, and will serve the memory impaired.  If you’d like to see the new community, don’t miss their Grand Opening on February 2 from 11am to 1pm.  Those residents that are committed to the Benton House on or before opening day will be part of the Founders Club.  Give them a call to find out what that’s all about!  Or better yet, visit them in person at 762 N. Main Street in Alpharetta.  They can be reached by phone at 678-319-3000.  Hollie tells us that one way to really get a good feel for a community is to stop by unannounced!  Go ahead, put them to the test!

Sarah Biehl, Director of Excitement for Ivy Springs Manor, has been on Eugeria! Radio a record six times!  In recognition of this achievement, the show has been renamed The Sarah Biehl Show for the rest of this week!  Though an Illinois native, Sarah got to Atlanta as quick as she could.  As always, she is quick to point out that she still can’t believe she actually gets paid to play!

Sarah is joined today by Courtney Legg, Executive Director at Ivy Springs Manor.  Courtney is also an Illinois native, having moved to Georgia in 1993.  After attending Valdosta State University, she worked in a variety of positions before she found her home in the Senior Living field.  She worked for a large national Assisted Living company for a number of years, when she was recruited by Thrive Senior Living to help open a new, high end community in Buford.  She has quickly moved to make Ivy Springs Manor one of the premier Senior Living addresses in the northern part of the Atlanta metro area.  Ivy Springs Manor has 77 luxurious units, 23 of which serve the memory impaired community.  Stop in for a tour at 3177 Gravel Springs Road in Buford (just behind the Mall of Georgia), call them at (770) 573-9096, or visit them on the web at www.ivyspringsmanor.com.

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Sharon Ash began her career working in the family business.  She tells us that her grandfather opened a restaurant nearly 70 years ago, and that only family had ever worked there!  She also noted that once you were tall enough to see over the counter, you were old enough to work!

Sharon followed her husband to Atlanta 18 years ago.  After missing the closeness of her family relationships for a number of years, Sharon found a surrogate family in the senior community when she took her first position at an assisted living community as an Activities Director.  Now, ten years later, she still feels like the senior community provides her with a surrogate family!  Through the Gwinnett Senior Provider Network, Sharon met April Watson, the Executive Director at Eastside Gardens.  As a result of that relationship, Sharon was able to get a position at Northlake Gardens, a sister community, as a Retirement Counselor.

Northlake Gardens in an assisted living community in Tucker with 66 suites, 14 of which are part of their memory care community.  Sharon tells us that the Northlake Gardens difference is their “whole home” approach and their personal interactions with their residents and families.  For more information about Northlake Gardens, call Sharon at (770) 934-0034, or stop in for a tour at 1300 Montreal Rd in Tucker!

Born and raised in Georgia, Steve Norris earned a degree at Georgia Tech, and started a career in insurance more than 36 years ago.  Initially focusing on life and health insurance, Steve had a client 17 years ago that asked if he offered long term care insurance.  She further explained that the reason she wanted to purchase long term care insurance was so that her two girls would not have to go what she had been going through caring for her mother for the past 7 years.

Consequently, Steve founded Long Life Strategies.  His mission is to help clients design and implement financial solutions to three of life’s most complicated issues:

1)        Out-living your assets

2)        Dying with insufficient assets

3)        Through disability, exhausting your assets

For more information about managing the cost of long term care, email him at steve@longlifestrategies.com, visit his website at www.longlifestrategies.com, or call him directly at 770-833-3496.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Lisa Lowe moved southward to the DC area and on to North Carolina, where she did the majority of her growing up.  As she recalls, the food industry was not a planned career for her, but got bitten by the bug and has stayed with it for the last 25 years.

Climbing the ranks in restaurant and hotel management, Lisa moved on to contract food service management where she stayed for 19 years.  Knowing that her position as a Support Chef in healthcare would at some point end, she decided to start her own business, Cooking for Caregivers.  Healthcare is an amazing field to work in so her business was built around cooking for those who could no longer cook for themselves or the overwhelmed caregiver.  Her own experience as a caregiver to her in-laws made her realize what a daunting task it can be.

Cooking is Lisa’s passion, however it’s also about establishing relationships with those that she cooks for. She recognizes that it’s just food, but if she can bring a smile to someone’s face that means everything to her.  For more information about Cooking for Caregivers, call Lisa directly at 770-364-7448, or email her at CookingForCaregiversllc@yahoo.com.

To anyone that speaks to Sandi Thurber, it is apparent that she loves her job, and is personally motivated by helping families in times of crisis and need. Educated in Sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi, Sandi began working with older adults on a part-time basis as the Activities Coordinator in a nursing home. After many years at both Meadowbrook and Delmar Gardens, she accepted her current position as a social worker at Gwinnett Extended Care Center (GECC) about six years ago.

Elizabeth Joseph came to the US from India twenty five years ago. When she came here, she intended to be a teacher. When she found it difficult to find a teaching job, she went back to school, and earned her RN degree. She moved to Atlanta 17 years ago, and accepted a position with the Gwinnett Medical system 14 years ago. Though she wears a multitude of hats, her primary role at GECC is to assist patients with their Medicare and insurance needs.

GECC is an 89 bed facility located adjacent to the main Gwinnett Medical Center campus in Lawrenceville. Sandi tells us this that being a part of the Gwinnett Medical system, and being co-located with the campus is a tremendous benefit for their patients, in that, there are a host of resources available that would not be easily accessible in another location. To find out more information about GECC, please call them directly at (678) 312-3000, or visit them on the web here.
