On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Michael Aziz author of the book Perfect 10 Diet. Dr Aziz is one of New York City’s most sought after physicians. He founded Midtown Integrative Medicine on Madison Avenue over a decade ago. After unsuccessfully trying to lose weight himself in the 1990’s using conventional methods – Dr Aziz began studying the relationships between nutrition, weight loss and better health. He realized that an aggressively low fat diet is bad for your health. So he began developing his own balanced approach to weight loss.  His progream focuses on ten key hormones (insulin, glucagon, leptin, human growth hormone, thyroid hormone, cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA) that help give you a more balanced approach to losing weight and keeping it off. His 40-20-40 formula (40% of calories come from good carbs, 20% comes from protein and 40% comes from healthy fats) helps the weight come off easy and keeps up your energy levels as well. Some of the tips Dr Aziz shared were: that there are two main reasons people gain weight 1-from emotional eating too much and 2- hormone imbalance. You should avoid foods that have too many chemicals and added hormones. Eat only real foods. You can create human growth hormone naturally by sleeping more, lifting weights and eating protein. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy shares tips on how your diet can effect your bone health. Building strong bones is important if you want to avoid getting osteoporosis.  A recent study found that in Asian countries they don’t consume the amount of dairy we consume here yet they have a low incidence of osteoporosis. The Asian diet consists of low acid foods like fruits and vegetables that help the body consume the calcium they get through the foods they eat. The thinking is that because we consume so much acidic animal protein here we are having a difficult time absorbing the calcium and that is why we suffer from osteoporosis at greater rates. So for good bone health and strong bones to prevent osteoporosis try a low acid diet that is high in fruits and veggies and low in meat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share Dr Fitness’ favorite recipe for Edamame Soup. Somehow the Fat Guy missed the memo that the edamame bean is really just a soy bean. But give it some exotic Asian name and you can charge more for it at restaurants. Well the edamame /soy bean is packed with nutrients, proteins and omega 3 fats. It even has calcium and other essential vitamins as well. So an easy way to add some of this healthy goodness into your diet is to make a soup out of them. Make up some vegetable broth, throw in some shelled edamames, some ginger and more of your favorite spices and veggies and you’ve got yourself a hearty healthy meal. And that bag of frozen vegetables that seemed like a good idea but you have not figured out the exact right meal for them is perfect for your next dinner. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with award winning science journalist Gary Taubes, author of the controversial book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Fats, Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! His mostly protein based eating plan is a favorite of Atkins and South Beach diet lovers like Jimmy Moore with Livin La Vida  Low Carb www.livinlavidalowcarb.com . You can find Gary’s book on Amazon and in bookstores everywhere.
