On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Michael Aziz author of the book Perfect 10 Diet. Dr Aziz is one of New York City’s most sought after physicians. He founded Midtown Integrative Medicine on Madison Avenue over a decade ago. After
unsuccessfully trying to lose weight himself in the 1990’s using conventional methods – Dr Aziz began studying the relationships between nutrition, weight loss and better health. He realized that an aggressively low fat diet is bad for your health. So he began developing his own balanced approach to weight loss. His progream focuses on ten key hormones (insulin, glucagon, leptin, human growth hormone, thyroid hormone, cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA) that help give you a more balanced approach to losing weight and keeping it off. His 40-20-40 formula (40% of calories come from good carbs, 20% comes from protein and 40% comes from healthy fats) helps the weight come off easy and keeps up your energy levels as well. Some of the tips Dr Aziz shared were: that there are two main reasons people gain weight 1-from emotional eating too much and 2- hormone imbalance. You should avoid foods that have too many chemicals and added hormones. Eat only real foods. You can create human growth hormone naturally by sleeping more, lifting weights and eating protein. Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! His mostly protein based eating plan is a favorite of Atkins and South Beach diet lovers like Jimmy Moore with Livin La Vida Low Carb
