In this episode of Tycoons, John talks about his experience transitioning from a career in the Air Force, to getting his executive MBA, to acquiring a small business. The leadership training in the military gave him the confidence to get into a business he had no experience in. John knew how to hire the right people with the right experience and let them do their jobs while he provides the top-level guidance. John walks us through the process of buying a small family-owned business, the challenges he faced, and the opportunities he found to grow and scale the business.

As the new management of a business built entirely upon it’s reputation, John’s focus was ensuring the same quality of workmanship and keeping existing customers happy. He also implemented a process and tracking method to identify which types of projects were most profitable to gather data in understanding where and how to improve.

As a veteran, John understands the challenge of interpreting the skills learned in the military and transferring them to a civilian job. The most important skills are not obvious on a resume, but rather speak to the ethic, quality, and pride of the work. If you or someone you know is interested in millwork, reach out to John. Austin Peterson is a Comprehensive Financial Planner and co-founder of Backbone Planning Partners in Scottsdale, AZ. Prior to joining Lincoln Financial Advisors, Austin worked in a variety of roles in the financial services industry.

He began his career in financial services in the year 2000 as a personal financial advisor with Independent Capital Management in Santa Ana, CA. Austin then joined Pacific Life Insurance Company as an internal wholesaler for their variable annuity and mutual fund products. After Pacific Life, Austin formed his own financial planning company in Southern California that he built and ran for 6 years and eventually sold when he moved his family to Salt Lake City to pursue his MBA.

After he completed his MBA, Austin joined Crump Life Insurance where he filled a couple of different sales roles and eventually a management role throughout the five years he was with Crump. Most recently before joining Lincoln Financial Advisors in February 2015, Austin spent 2 years as a life insurance field wholesaler with Symetra Life Insurance Company. Austin is a Certified Financial Planner Professional and Chartered Life Underwriter. In 2021, Austin became a Certified Business Exit Consultant® (CBEC®) to help entrepreneurs plan to exit their businesses.

Austin and his wife of 23 years, Robin, have two children, AJ (21) and Ella (18) and they reside in Gilbert, Arizona. He is a graduate of California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts in French and of Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management with a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in sales and entrepreneurship.backbone-New-Logo

Landon Mance is a Financial Planner and co-founder of Backbone Planning Partners out of Las Vegas, Nevada. He rebranded his practice in 2020 to focus on serving small business owners after operating as Mance Wealth Management since 2015 when Landon broke off from a major bank and started his own “shop.”

Landon comes from a family of successful entrepreneurs and has a passion and excitement for serving the business community. This passion is what brought about the growth of Backbone Planning Partners to help business owners and their families. At Backbone Planning, we believe small business owners’ personal and business goals are intertwined, so we work with our clients to design a financial plan to support all aspects of their lives.

In 2019, Landon obtained the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation through the Exit Planning Institute. With this certification, Backbone Planning Partners assists business owners through an ownership transition while focusing on a positive outcome for their employees and meeting the business owner’s goals. Landon is also a member of the Business Intelligence Institute (BII) which is a collaborative group that shares tools, resources and personnel, and offers advanced level training and technical support to specifically serve business owners. In 2021, Landon became a Certified Business Exit Consultant® (CBEC®) to help entrepreneurs plan to exit their businesses by counseling owners about exit options, estimating the value of the business, preparing the business for exit and tax considerations.

Landon enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, stepson, and new baby twins. He grew up in sunny San Diego and loves visiting his family, playing a round of golf with friends, and many other outdoor activities. Landon tries to make a difference in the lives of children in Las Vegas as a part of the leadership team for a local non-profit. He regularly visits the children that we work with to remind himself of why it’s so important to, “be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Landon received his B.S. from California State University Long Beach in business marketing and gets the rest of his education through the school of hard knocks via his business owner clients.

Brandon-Faulcon-iKon-MallBorn and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Brandon Faulcon, the 31-year-old virtual mall owner, is now ready to change the shopping industry by creating an interactive e-commerce gaming system. Born into a family of 2 brothers and 1 sister, he grew up as the middle child.

Brandon joined the United States Marine Corps in 2008 where he deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, the same year his daughter Karmen Faulcon (founder of iKon Mall) was born. Since his return home from deployment, Brandon has been diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety, and Sleep Apnea. While battling these disabilities, he has helped lead the way for other veterans by showing the fight is never over, but that is no reason to feel defeated.

After his 8 years of service, Brandon moved to DC to work in the federal government until his daughter came up with a business venture called “iKon Mall”. He then moved in with a roommate to save money to build this new shopping platform for small businesses.

In one year, Brandon has created iKon Mall while saving and investing over $30,000 in his 10-year-old daughter’s dream. iKon Mall is now ready to launch at the end of July.

Orlando Lynch’s foray into the moving business began with one truck purchased from the man who moved him into his Atlanta home in 1987. In the ensuing decades, Mr. Lynch has worked tirelessly to become one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the Southeast relocation industry and to create not only Georgia’s largest moving and storage company, but the region’s best, with an unwavering emphasis on customer service and quality.

When not working to fulfill his vision of excellence for Atlanta Peach Movers and volunteering in the community, Mr. Lynch can be found at Turner Field cheering on his beloved Atlanta Braves.

Edmund Ruiz is the Director of Sales for Atlanta Peach Movers. He has been in the moving and storage industry for over twenty two years, and takes pride in his work, his ethics and being the number one moving company in Atlanta. Edmund is very particular with the details of the move logistics, which makes for a fantastic experience for the client.

Edmund has done over 5,000 on site estimates and his overall mission is to have 100% customer satisfaction. He is a U.S. Marine Corp. Veteran with 13 years of service, and has received awards such as the Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Mast and Recruiter of the Year.

Edmund has a lovely wife of 20 years and a son who is a first year at Augusta University. He also has a Yorkie and a rescue.
