In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why putting calories on restaurant menus will help you lose weight. Despite recent research to the contrary (probably funded by the restaurant industry) we think that listing the number of calories in restaurant meals will help you lose weight. Being aware and mindful of the number of calories you are about to consume will affect your behavior. The more information the consumer has the better. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Nudging the Calorie Counters from Freakonomics Blog

October 17, 2009 by angishields

Great post on Freakonomics blog in New York Times about how little nudges like calorie count labels on restaurant menus,  signs telling you how many calories you’ll burn walking from the last parking spot in a mall shopping center even stairs that play musical notes as you walk up and down them encourage healthy living.

Here’s the post – check out the photo’s by clicking on the link…

We blogged about musical stairs in Stockholm that try to encourage stair-climbing rather than escalator-riding. One of the issues with this “nudge,” as Dubner wrote, is that it’s probably more fun for people to descend them than to ascend.

These stairs in Lisbon, however, address that problem by appealing to the calorie conscious.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of Dr Fitness’ favorite authors. Dr. David Kessler. He is the former Commissioner of the FDA (the same guy who changed food labels and took on the tobacco industry)  and author of the bestselling book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. This book will change the way you look at food. In the book Dr Kessler cracks the code to why you overeat. He explains that the food industry has literally made it a science to figure out exactly what makes food so delicious and addicting. He calls these foods hyper palatable. These hyper-palatable foods have been engineered in food labs to actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave and want to eat more. Restaurants and food manufacturers combine fat, sugar and salt in cleverly delicious ways to make you want it more and more. They have come up with foods that have never existed before and that humans desire with such demand that many of these companies are multi-billion dollar money machines. Dr Kessler explains why you overeat and gives you some ways to stop. And stopping is not as simple as trying harder and having willpower because these foods change your brain chemistry much like drugs or nicotine does. In order to stop you have to treat your favorite trigger foods much like an alcoholic treats liquor. You have to avoid it and avoid the places it is served. And you can’t connect the food with emotional memories. Try to reward yourself and celebrate in other ways rather than eating and going out to restaurants.  To learn more please go to his website www.theendofovereatingbook.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Marta Montenegro with SobeFit magazine. So far Marta’s Montenegro Method has helped us lose over 20 lbs so far. As always she gave us some great weight loss advice and support. She explained that by making small changes and sticking with them until they become a habit before moving onto the next change will help us stay compliant and stick to our plan longer. She said that if we have reached a plateau we should change up our routine. That means we should increase the intensity or duration of our workouts or decrease the number of calories we are eating. She said it is not okay to binge on the weekends, if we are getting tired of eating the same thing day after day we should change up the foods but not increase the calories. She explained the importance of pre-planning. By always having a healthy snack with you you can resist the urge to go through a drive through or raid the vending machine. And at restaurants choose the healthy option and avoid the creamy soups or salad dressing.  Subscribe to the best fitness magazine in America at www.sobefitmagazine.
