A long standing goal in therapeutics development, that remains for the most part unmet, is the ability to deliver medicines to the tissues and cells where the therapeutic agent will produce a desired benefit. Medicines are often needed only in specific diseased organs, tissues, or even certain cells, but the vast majority of drugs are distributed throughout the body, and the bulk of the administered drug ends up in locations where it is not needed, often producing unwanted side effects.

Souvie BioDelivery is a biotech company developing a cell based novel drug delivery platform to deliver complex macromolecular payloads to specific target cells and tissues. The payload is delivered into target cells in a biologically active form that can induce phenotypic and /or genotypic changes and enable healing for the patient. This platform is scalable, multifaceted and non-immunogenic.

Souvie-Tachado-AZ-TechCastSouvenir Tachado, MD, is an accomplished immunologist and has 30 years of research experience. He directed research projects on HIV pathogenesis while he was at Harvard Medical School. He demonstrated that macrophages infected by HIV release exosomes that contain HIV miRNAs.

These exosomes account for how HIV delivers and spreads infection. This important observation forms the basis for his idea in developing a novel drug delivery platform using engineered exosomes as a delivery vehicle of drugs to poorly accessible sites underlying disease progression.

Following 30 years in academic medicine, Dr Tachado exited after having co-founded a drug discovery firm Capienda Biotech in 2017. In 2018, he founded Souvie Biodelivery to develop a novel exosome-based drug delivery platform.

Northside Total Joint Specialists

Dr. Jon Minter of Northside Total Joint Specialists

This week I sat down with Dr. Jon Minter of Northside Total Joint Specialists.  In our ongoing monthly series with Northside Hospital we learned about the various conditions that could lead to a total joint replacement.  Dr. Minter shared some great information about some of the techniques he uses now to perform the surgery, including using robotic assistance with portions of the procedure.  Having robotic assistance helps the surgeon minimize surgical trauma to the tissue in the surgical field, making the recovery process proceed more quickly and with less pain.

Dr. Minter talked about the fact that he is able to perform joint replacement for a wide variety of joints from knees, to hips, shoulders, wrists, ankles and even digits.  He is able to repair joint damage from disease processes such as arthritis as well as traumatic injuries.  I was surprised to learn that patients undergoing total hip replacement and total knee replacement can often go home to recover the same day as their surgery rather than staying for several days in the hospital.

Dr. Minter discussed how he takes a conservative approach to joint replacement, exploring non-surgical options where feasible to attempt to give the patient relief of pain while avoiding surgery if possible.  If you or a loved one is experiencing a decrease in activity in an effort to avoid pain you should seek a consultation with this specialist.  You will be pleased to experience his pleasant, personable demeanor.  We talked about the fact that when patients begin to avoid activity in an effort to prevent experiencing pain, they can see their heart health decrease over time, potentially shortening their lives.  Dr. Jon Minton of Northside Total Joint Specialists can help you or your loved ones get your life back through his expert, conservative approach to joint replacement.

On the heels of National Arthritis month in the U.S., this segment of  The Doctors Roundtable focuses on osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  These two illnesses, out of the over 100 musculoskeletal disorders,  affect millions of Americans and their ability to maintain high quality physical movement throughout their lives.   In the U.S., arthritis is the leading cause of disability and it is not just a disease caused by aging.  Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic conditions with no clearly known causes.  These diseases are progressive and degenerative , leading to the breakdown of cartilage, bones, muscles and membranes surrounding the joints.  The effects of this breakdown include: inflammation, pain, fatigue, joint stiffness and at times joint deformity and disability.  Imagine standing, sitting, lying down or coughing and all causing pain.  Many patients report there is never a day they can forget they have arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation is the nation’s largest private funder of research, public health programs and advocacy on behalf of the 50 million Americans living with this painful disease.  With the aging of Baby Boomers, it has been estimated  that by 2030,  67 million Americans will have some form of arthritis.  Here, the Arthritis Foundation will discuss an overview of these two diseases and how they are working to fund research, change policies and educate to help arthritis patients today and tomorrow.

John H. Klippel, M.D.

John H. Klippel, M.D. is president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation, the largest voluntary health organization serving the 50 million Americans living with the nation’s number one cause of disability. Dr. Klippel has held the position since October 2003.

Prior to joining the Arthritis Foundation, Dr. Klippel served as Clinical Director of the National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). During his professional career at the National Institutes of Health, he authored or co-authored 190 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters related to arthritis.  He has served as editor of the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases and the textbook Rheumatology.

Roberta Byrum
