In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some child safety tips. Sometimes its hard to keep your kid safe because they move so fast and are very slippery when they are wet.  But here are some of the easy things you can do…Teach your kid to swim at a very young age. Now I’m not talking swimming lessons to make them the next Michael Phelps, I’m talking survival swim lessons, so they don’t drown if they accidentally fall into a pool, jacuzzi or bathtub. When you are teaching your child to ride his/her bike explain the importance of braking without crashing into things. In the car always buckle up – and make sure your kids know its never a good idea to thrown things in the car – a thrown object can distract the driver or the object can get stuck under the brake pedal under the drivers feet. Little kids also shouldn’t be handling lit fireworks. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to handle some kid emergencies. Sometimes its hard to tell if your kid is really sick, hurt or injured. Is it a real emergency or should you just wait and see. These are some signs you have a real emergency on your hands. If you kid hits the ground or hits his/her head and is unconscious for any length of time – it is an emergency. If after this fall he/she has difficulty walking and/or , speaking, is puking or crying excessively – you are dealing with an emergency. Also if you think you kid swallowed something he/she shouldn’t have like poison – call 1-800-222-1222 for poison control – and have the bottle of whatever you think your kid swallowed with you. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy closed the show with personal safety expert Ingo Weigel author of the book Self Defense for Modern Times. He teaches the Revat Fitness technique. He shared some of his best self defense tips for women or the Fat Guy. Some people think that women need different self defense techniques than men – Ingo disagrees.  Ingo thinks that surviving crime requires more mental toughness than physical abilities. Size, weight, conditioning and upper body strength don’t make the difference. Ingo says that lady like self defense and anti-crime gadgets offer unrealistic guarantees. His tips were great. Number 1 – never go to the floor or ground to fight back. Number 2 – never start wrestling or grappling with your attacker. Number 3 – target groin, eyes throat. Remember you only have a couple of seconds to react and your attacker is probably stronger than you so be proactive, look the guy in the eyes  and take charge once you know a confrontation is inevitable. To learn more please go to his websites www.revatfitness.com or www.selfdefenseformoderntimes.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite jogger safety tips. Safe jogging is so important especially with everyone wearing headphones and listening to their music so loud you aren’t paying close attention to what is around you. Run in populated locations and try to invite a partner to jog with you. When you are going around corners or near blind alleys pay close attention. Carry some pepper spray, mace or something that makes a loud noise. And remember you probably are more likely to be attacked by an animal than a person so be on the look out for animals as well. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite tips on using pepper spray. Pepper spray has been shown to keep you safe when you are in danger. If you are accosted by a person you should aim the spray at their face from 6-8 feet away then run like the Fat Guy is chasing you away from the dangerous situation. You can also use pepper spray when you are walking or running in areas where their might be wild animals.  Fog sprays are not as effective as stream sprays which are more concentrated and tend to work better. Remember the spray is just a means to to give you time to get away and run to safety – it will not permanently disable the attacker or animal.   Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite playground safety tips. Playgrounds are agreat place for a kid to learn about the joy of play but you have to be careful – 15 children die on playgrounds each year and countless others suffer unnecessary injuries. After it rains remember things get slippery and more difficult to balance on. Make sure one child ata time is going down the slide – this is an area where a lot of kids get hurt when one kid goes up the slide the wrong way while another kid is sliding down. Don’t go barefoot – there could be sharp objects buried under the soft ground cover. Watch for splinters along wooden rails. And always keep an eye open for swing people and object – nothing ruins play time faster than a kid getting whacked inthe head by someone on the swings.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
