Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Lynn Ross attended Auburn University, earning a degree in interior design.  After college she went into the retail industry, and was a buyer for a department store.  After getting married, Lynn moved to Valdosta with her husband.  There she found a job as the Activities Director for a skilled nursing facility, and absolutely loved it.

Finding she had a knack for working with seniors, she decided to enroll in Valdosta State University’s new Masters program in Social Work.  In 2001 she was part of the second graduating class, with only 30 other students!  A year later, in 2002, Lynn moved to Atlanta, and continued to work as an Activities Director at an assisted living facility.  This work led her to a position as a geriatric social worker for an elder law attorney.  Six years ago, today, Lynn became the first social worker in Emory University’s Department of Neurology Movement Disorders Program.

Lynn is very passionate about her work with Movement Disorders.  Though her work covers seven different movement disorders, Parkinson’s Disease is the most common.  To that end, Lynn is also the coordinator for the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s information and referral center.  Coincident with Lynn’s appearance on the show, Eugeria! Radio wants to make our listeners aware that April is National Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.  To that end, there are a number of events coming up including a golf tournament at Smokerise Country Club, a fundraising walks, several educational events, two shows with Lamb Chop and Mallory Lewis, and more.  For details on these events, check the APDA Georgia Chapter’s website at www.apdageorgia.org/.  Also don’t miss an opportunity to hear from Emory’s researchers on the latest ideas in Parkinson’s Disease research:  “Community Conversations with Emory Parkinson’s Disease Researchers” on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 10:00 am – 1:30 pm in the Claudia Nance Rollins Building, 1518 Clifton Road, Atlanta, 30322.  To register, go to www.udall.emory.edu/community_outreach.

To find out more about the Movement Disorder Program at Emory University’s Neurology Department, or to reach Lynn directly, call her at 404-728-6300.

Originally from Ohio, Anissa Groves attended the University of Toledo, earning a degree in Science Education with a minor in Psychology.  Graduating in 1992, in a tough job market, Anissa decided to pursue a Masters Degree in Social Work at Arizona State University.  After thirteen years in Phoenix, Anissa decided to move to Atlanta to be close family.

After earning her degree, Anissa worked in pharamaceutical sales.  About five years ago, she had an opportunity to observe hospice up close when her grandfather passed away.   Given her education in social work, she decided to learn more about hospice.  This ultimately led her to her current position at Halcyon Hospice.

Halcyon Hospice was formed when owners Don Cole and and Jack Drauhon purchased both Compassionate Hospice and Altus Hospice.  The company was named after the Walt Whitman poem, Halcyon Days, referencing that period of calm during the winter, when storms do not occur.

To get more information about Halcyon Hospice, check them out on the the web at www.excellenceinhospice.com  or call them at (678) 328-1700.

“Show Me”!  Amy Hentschel is a Show Me Girl!  Born and raised in Missouri, Amy believes that actions speak louder than words.  Drawn to serving seniors at an early age, Amy spent many hours during her high school years volunteering in hospitals and with hospice.  After earning a degree in Communications and Mass Media from the University of Missouri, she took a job with Medicare provider and equipment distributor in Illinois.

After moving to Atlanta and working for a number of years with an assisted living community, Amy began planning a new business that would provide support, advice and resource to the seniors she’d become so attached to.  Senior Provisions is an organization dedicated to assisting seniors and their families in evaluating their needs, and finding solutions to meet those needs, whether in their current home, or in a new environment.  Her services are free to her clients.  She provides expert guidance in the areas of senior living options, adult day programs, skilled nursing options, Alzheimer’s care, non-medical home care, support groups and financial/legal services.

Amy tells us that her business is also her mission.  While she provides high quality professional services, she is also their to minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of her clients.  To that end, she hosts a monthly Caregiver group focused on providing this kind of support and assistance to family caregivers – whether they are hands on with a family member, or supporting from a distance.  Amy’s next Caregiver Meeting will be held this Saturday, February 23, from 10am to 11am, at the Sunrise at Johns Creek located at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road.  Brian Byars, a certified VA claims advisor, will be speaking.  To register for this event, or find out more about Senior Provisions, please call Amy directly at (678) 925-0223, or visit their website at www.myseniorprovisions.com.

A rare Atlanta native, Bob Carr tells us he grew up less than a mile from the Eugeria! Radio Studio!  He attended Sandy Springs High School, attended The University of Georgia, earning a BS degree in Psychology, then served in the US Army at Fort Benning as a Second Lieutenant.

After leaving the military, Bob began a career in the insurance industry.  He spent ten years running his own agency before selling it and founding Executive Adventure, with a mission of encouraging better communication and teamwork in business and corporate organizations.  After nearly three decades, Bob sold Executive Adventure, and started working with senior adults with cognitive impairments.  Having seen the impact on patients and their families first-hand, Bob connected with Second Wind Dreams to help them fulfill their mission of enhancing the quality of seniors’ lives through the fulfillment of dreams and education of families and senior care professionals.

Founded by P.K. Beville in 1997, Second Wind Dreams is a non-profit organization that seeks to experientially educate individuals with respect to what it’s like to live with a cognitive impairment such as is caused by Alzheimer’s disease and others.  The Virtual Dementia Tour provides a tactile experience that inhibits a persons natural motor and cognitive abilities.  After a few minutes in a darkened room, and having been asked to perform simple tasks, the participants then share their experiences with others in a facilitated feedback session.

For our listeners in Atlanta, there will be a Virtual Dementia Tour experience held on January 31 at the Holiday Inn in Roswell, located at 909 Holcomb Bridge Road, from 10 am to 1 pm.  If you would like to register, please call Candice at 678-624-0500, or email her at Candice@secondwind.org.  You may also visit their website at www.secondwind.org.

Kim Joens is a Midwest girl, born and raised in the Heartland in Nebraska and Ohio.  Later she moved east to Pennsylvania, attending Slippery Rock University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Resource Management.  She went on to become a park ranger in Coral Springs, Florida for a number of years.  Eventually, she had the opportunity to move back to Atlanta, where she had lived briefly.  This time, she worked for Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation for a number of years, also earning her Masters in Social Work at the University of Georgia.

Kim worked at Gwinnett Medical Center for her internship, then took a full time position.  She began working with the palliative care team there, and felt like she had come home.  As one of her teammates moved on, Kim also found herself with an opportunity to do hospice work full time at Seasons Hospice.  She is a Hospice Care Consultant, and spends her days counseling families on their options, and educating them on the benefits of hospice.  Listen in as she shares her journey, and as she talks about why Seasons Hospice is different!  For more information, feel free to check out their website at www.seasonshospice.org, or call them at (404) 250-4950.

Atria is one of Buckhead’s premier assisted living and memory communities for senior adults.  Conveniently located on Lenox Road in the heart of Buckhead, Atria has 60 assisted living apartments, and 14 memory care apartments.  As they always do, Atria of Buckhead is inviting anyone in the community to join them for lunch on Christmas Day.  If you know someone that could use a great meal, please let them know!

Andrea Accoo is a return guest to Eugeria! Radio.  She was born, raised and educated in New Jersey, attending Bloomfield College to earn her undergraduate degree, and attending Rutgers University to get her Masters in Social Work.  Andrea moved to Atlanta in 1999.  Andrea took a position with Golden Living in 2004, and spent 8 years in the skilled nursing environment.  In 2009, Andrea was awarded the honor of Social Worker of the Year by the Georgia Healthcare Association.  After more than a decade with Golden Living, Andrea decided to accept the position of Life Guidance Director at Atria of Buckhead.  She is primarily responsible for Atria’s Memory Care Community.

Joining Andrea today is Tae Stallsworth.  Tae hails from Mobile, Alabama, attended  Bishop State to get her RN degree, then Springhill College to get her Bachelors degree in Pre Law.  Today, Tae is the Nurse Resident Services Director at Atria.  She is fundamentally responsible for overseeing the well being of every resident in the community.  Andrea tells us that one of the differentiators at Atria is the fact that there is both a social worker and an RN working together to provide the best possible service for each and every resident.

For more information about Atria of Buckhead, or to arrange a tour, call Andrea or Tae at (404) 240-2848, or visit their website at www.atriabuckhead.com.

Return guest, Jeff Smythe discovered early on that he wanted to spend his life and career helping people.  While in college, he spent time with WorldTeach in Costa Rica.  Upon return and graduation from college, Jeff moved from Denver to Atlanta.  He started working with OpenHand Atlanta, and went on to earn a Masters in Public Administration from Georgia State University.  About 10 years ago, Jeff began working for Senior Citizen Services, now Meals on Wheels Atlanta,(www.MealsOnWheelsAtlanta.org).  Now, as the Executive Director of the organization, Jeff takes pride in the fact that the organization serves more than 100,000 meals per year through its Meals on Wheels program, and provides home repair for literally hundreds of Fulton County citizens each year.

Jessica Gill has never held a job that didn’t involve serving seniors!  Growing up in Connecticut, she spent time in school visiting nursing homes.  While doing that, she also learned to square dance.  As a result of that experience, she developed a passion for the senior community.  She went on to school at University of Southern Connecticut, earning a Masters in Public Health, and then to Boston University, where she received a certificate in Gerontology.  Upon graduation, Jessica took a job with the CDC, and was ultimately transferred to Atlanta.  She is also a certified geriatric care manager, and has spent time working with the Area Agency on Aging, as well as working as a geriatric care manager in private practice.  Today she works for Sunrise Senior Living as an Area Manager of Business Development. Part of her role with Sunrise is linking arms with like-minded organizations in the community.  Thus, Sunrise and Meals on Wheels Atlanta have come together to provide more than 300 Christmas Eve/Christmas Day meals for Atlanta’s most needy seniors.  To find out how you can donate or get involved, please contact either Jeff or Jennifer.  Here are their coordinates:

Jeff Smythe:  Phone – (404)-351-3889  Email:  jsmythe@mealsonwheelsatlanta.org

Jessica Gill:  Twitter @GillJJLL, Email: Jessica.Gill@sunriseseniorliving.com

To donate canned goods, blankets, CO2 or Smoke Detectors, simply drop them off at any of the 10 Atlanta Sunrise locations, but hurry – only 19 days to Christmas Eve!
