Research shows that kids who play team sports are only actually moving, burning calories and exercising about half the time they are there. FYI this includes practices as well as the actual games. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Roy Johnson, editor-in-chief of Men’s Fitness magazine. He let us know that Rob Lowe is the September cover and he got in the best shape of his life to get there. There is also a great spread featuring Sofia Vergara from Modern Family which is a must see. Roy talked about how outdoor adventure events are a great way to add variety to your workouts and your training. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Kathy Smith. Kathy has been a leading force in the wellness industry since 1980. She has sold over 16 million exercise videos and was recently inducted into the Video Hall of Fame. She serves on the board of the USC School of Gerontology and the Women’s Sports Foundation. And Kathy has recently been awarded a lifetime achievement award for her work in fitness from IDEA Health & Fitness. She also has a new book out titled Feed Muscle. Shrink Fat. She shared her biggest fitness tip which is to find something you love and throw yourself into it. Kids need about an hour of moderate intensity exercise daily in order to be healthy and fit but sadly a lot of them are not getting enough. When we say exercise we are not only talking about aerobics classes and playing sports. There are lots of ways to be active that doesn’t require any private lessons, gym memberships or athletic skills. We encourage you to match activities to your child’s interests.
