In this episode of Culture Crush Rx,  Deb talks with two of the people who have had a profound impact on her personally, Jason Zelich, owner of ONE TRIBE Yoga & Wellness, and Jeremey Leib, owner of Tribal CrossFit. Tribal CrossFit has been in business for more than 10 years. The gym has seen many athletes come through the doors over the years and watched CrossFit as a whole grow and become more well known. The coaches work hard to encourage people they work with and they want them to feel successful for their efforts. Their goal is to be the best hour of their members’ days. The team encourages everyone to be safe as they work hard and cheer on one another during each session. They offer various hours for CrossFit and now Yoga on Saturdays. They work with people one on one as well as in group sessions and also offer nutrition coaching and accountability. Jeremy-Leib-on-Business-RadioXJeremey Leib has been involved in athletics his whole life. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Vladimir Chubinsky with YWBI Wellness Center in Sandy Springs GA, (a suburb of Atlanta). Vladimir told us about the health benefits of doing his Anatoly Gravitational System four patented strength training workouts which features lifting massive amounts of weight with a short range of motion. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to exercise with cancer. Back in the day exercise with almost any ailment was frowned upon – doctors just wanted you to rest. Now the research is pointing to a lot of health benefits from being in good physical condition before, during and after your treatment. Always ask your doctor, but two to three hours of moderate activity is what you should shoot for – and choose activities like yoga, swimming and strength training. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the health benefits using more weight vs less weight when strength training. The age old debate which is a better workout less weight with more repetitions or more weight with less reps. Does more weight make you bulky and less weight make you lean? A recent study showed that women who worked out with more weight but less reps had better results – they lost the most weight and had lower body fat. Remember to you want to use enough weight (or resistance) to make it difficult – toward the end of a set you should have a hard time doing one more rep. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Michele Olson a strength and conditioning guru who runs her own Human Performance Lab at Auburn University. She has a bit of a controversial take on exercise  – having debunked the pilates for abs myth. You should hear what she thinks about Sports Specific Training – not a fan. She thinks the Wii Fit is great for sedentary people who are moving from no exercise to something – but for the current active person she says doing an activity in reality will expend more energy and work you out harder than a video game will. But the bottom line for Dr Abs is that some activity is better than nothing so go ahead and use the Wii Fit. In her work she tests the claims of exercise products and publishes them in peer reviewed journals. Sometimes this takes 2 years to do and in that time these faulty devices could have sold millions – so it is frustrating work. She says the ACSM has a quick peer review that can be done in months that trues to address this time issue. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why exercise is like cooking not baking. The Fat Guy has a new theory about working out. Please share your thoughts and comments because it is a little controversial. He just started lifting weights again so that is what started this theory. He says you should work out like you cook not like how you bake. For example when the Fat Guy has 30 minutes at the gym he doesn’t carry a notebook with the names of exercises and the weight and how many reps he has to do, etc. He just wanders the gym and goes machine to machine trying to hit the major body parts. He sets the machine on a low but challenging weight then does one set at a very slow pace (as slow as 10 seconds per rep) until he can’t do another rep. If he feel like to doing more arms than legs then Bam, just like Emeril he does more arms then legs. This is opposed to those people who log in every rep like it’s a science experiment. They are following their work out like Duff from Ace of Cakes makes his Girl Scout Cookie cake. The Fat Guy thinks if you are more unstructured while you exercise you will stay compliant longer and get good enough results to keep you going. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Mitchell Yass, the author of the book Overpower Pain: The Strength Training Program that Stops Pain Without Drugs or Surgery. Mitchell is a licensed Physical Therapist and has spent years helping his patients avoid unnecessary drugs and surgery while freeing them from pain indefinitely. Mitchell explained that a lot of pain is caused by muscle weakness or muscle imbalance and that the right exercise can make your pain disappear. He said a lot of chronic pain is misdiagnosed as acute pain.  He says that most doctors rely on x-rays or MRI’s for their initial diagnosis which then leads to an improper diagnosis and treatment plan.
