GUIDE STUDENTS THROUGH THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS AND EARN MONEY FOR COLLEGE WITH THE COLLEGE BOARD OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Lacey applying to college can be confusing, and too many students don’t get the guidance they need. Students can stay on track with college planning through the College Board Opportunity Scholarships, thanks to a five-year $25 million investment by the College Board. One million dollars each year will go to students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through the College Board Opportunity Scholarships.

Lacey Allen is an Associate Director for the College Board Opportunity Scholarships, a program that awards $5 million dollars each year to high school students.

Lacey previously worked at Search Institute, a youth development research organization, as a qualitative researcher and facilitator. She also served in both the Peace Corps and Ameri Corps; while in Morocco with the Peace Corps, Lacey volunteered with NGOs and US-based nonprofits to develop literacy tools, resources, and a library for youth in community centers, and while with AmeriCorps, Lacey worked to improve college access opportunities for first-generation high school students.

Lacey has an M.Ed in Youth Development Leadership and a B.A. in Communication.

The U.S. isn’t doing enough testing to control COVID-19. according to researchers at Harvard Global Health Institute who say we need 4.4 million tests per day to reach “a basic level of proactive testing,” and far more (14M) is necessary to safely reopen the economy. Yet, we’ve never managed to perform more than 1M per day. DID YOU KNOW folks that every year in the US, more than 100,000 monkeys are kept in laboratories where they are confined to small cages or crowded conditions. Sadly, they suffer through painful experiments and eventually—sometimes after decades of abuse– all of them are killed. Dr. Alka Chandna is with us today to do all these Monkey’s come from.

Dr. Alka Chandna

Dr. Alka Chandna is the vice president of laboratory investigations cases for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, focusing on animal experimentation issues. She oversees PETA’s efforts to end cruel experiments on animals in laboratories, and her many victories include helping to close notorious contract animal-testing facility Professional Laboratory and Research Services and end the National Institutes of Health’s decades-long maternal-deprivation experiments on baby monkeys.

More than 90% of animal experiments fail to lead to treatments for humans. More than 95% of new pharmaceutical drugs that test safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials.

Since its founding in 1980, PETA has been urging the National Institutes of Health to move away from animal experiments, and its campaigns have shut down numerous NIH-funded experiments, including torturous psychological experiments on baby monkeys taken from their mothers.

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15th, and people with Medicare have until December 7th to make changes to their health plans or prescription drug plans or select a new plan for 2021.

Seema Verma, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

As the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Seema Verma oversees a $1 trillion budget, representing 26% of the total federal budget, and administers health coverage programs for more than 130 million Americans. She was nominated by President Trump on November 29, 2016 – the seventh nomination by the President-elect – and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 13, 2017.

This year, the Administrator has set a bold agenda to empower patients and transform the healthcare system to deliver better value and results for patients through competition and innovation. CMS will focus all of its efforts on 16 strategic initiatives across Medicare, Medicaid, and the Exchanges to move the healthcare delivery system toward value.

During her tenure, Administrator Verma’s strong leadership at CMS has led to many major accomplishments. The agency has:

Stabilized the individual health insurance market, where average premiums decreased in 2019 for the first time ever on federally facilitated exchanges, and Medicare Advantage premiums continue to decline,

Restored the state and federal partnership for Medicaid with the approval of community engagement demonstrations to promote work and financial independence

Introduced the first-ever Medicaid & CHIP Scorecard to provide much-needed transparency on how well Medicaid is serving its beneficiaries

Acted across all programs to lower the cost of prescription drugs, including by bolstering the ability of Medicare Advantage & Part D plans to negotiate lower drug costs for patients

Transformed the meaningful use program to focus on interoperability

Created novel access to virtual check-ins for Medicare beneficiaries and expanded support for telehealth and remote patient monitoring

Updated documentation guidelines and reduced 53 million hours of the administrative burden through the “Patients over Paperwork” and “Meaningful Measures” initiatives

Launched the Blue Button 2.0 API, through which more than 1,700 mobile app developers have signed up to provide beneficiaries with access to their claims data and help them achieve better health

Advanced bundled payment models to motivate healthcare providers to furnish services more efficiently, coordinate care, and improve quality and

Published guidelines requiring hospitals to post their standard pricing information online in a machine-readable format, updating it at least once a year—a first step toward giving patients the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

Administrator Verma is a graduate of the University of Maryland and holds a Master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in health policy and management from Johns Hopkins University.

Her editorial commentaries have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Washington Times, and Health Affairs, and she also previously served as Vice President of Planning for the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County, Indiana. Most recently before heading CMS, she was President and CEO of SVC, Inc.

Andrew Sampson, Investment Advisor Representative, Wilde Wealth Management Group, Phoenix

2020 has been a year unlike any other in recent memory. For many Americans, it has placed a renewed emphasis on the importance of smart financial planning and money management.  Unfortunately, many are still struggling when it comes to understanding and saving money. That’s where a financial advisor can assist, helping individuals to stay disciplined and on track during a challenging time.

According to Charles Schwab’s latest Financial Literacy Survey, 89% of Americans believe that lack of financial education contributes to social and societal problems such as poverty, joblessness, wealth inequality and race relations

Despite this desire for financial knowledge, a CNBC/Acorns Invest in You Savings Survey released late last year revealed that about 75% of Americans refuse to seek out professional financial advice, preferring instead to manage their own finances.

Andrew shares tips to help ensure a successful relationship with a financial advisor:

  • DO YOUR RESEARCH: A financial advisor is a deeply personal choice. You need to find someone with whom you feel comfortable sharing the full details of your financial situation. Finding the right fit requires a bit of research. Your own network of friends and family may be able to recommend someone who is right for you.
  • BROKER VS. FINANCIAL PLANNER:  A broker tends to handle only your investments while a financial planner will look more holistically at your financial life, including insurance, estate planning, tax planning and investment management.
  • PUT YOUR PANDEMIC SAVINGS TO USE:  For many, the pandemic has had a silver lining—staying at home has allowed many to save money that would have normally gone to restaurants, shopping and other discretionary purchases. An advisor can help decide how to put that unexpected surplus to use.
  • USE DEBT WISELY:  Many people hit rough times or simply make mistakes when faced with unexpected expenses. There is no shame in carrying debt, but there is a right way and a wrong way to use credit. A financial advisor can assist with how best to manage debt in a challenging time.
