On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Farredeh Baughcum. She was recently featured on the cover of Good Housekeeping for her inspirational weight loss story. Farredeh shared her very emotional story – her mother was assaulted and that triggered a weight gain, but through the support of her husband, close friends and and a Weight Watchers leader she was able to lose the weight and keep it off. She learned how to manage portions better – since her main problem was portion control the Weight Watchers point system helped her a lot. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Bob Harper, one of the fitness trainers from the Biggest Loser TV show. Bob has a new exercise dvd series called My Trainer Bob Inside Out Method, a raw workout with real results. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Barry Sears, creator of the Zone Diet. Dr Sears is the leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. His theory is that you have to keep your hormones in a zone that is not too high or too low. He believes that the food you eat has the biggest impact on your hormone levels and therefore your weight and your health. He says when your hormones are out of whack you become sicker, fatter and dumber. His solution is to get rid of all the vegetable oil in your pantry, eat less processed foods, eat less foods with Omega 6 fatty acids, eat more foods with Omega 3 fatty acids, eat smaller portions, eat more vegetables and have some cod liver oil everyday. He says your Grandmother was right – as you will notice that is the same advice she was giving you. He also gave a great tip on how to check out your fish oil supplement to make sure it is good. Here is Dr Barry Sear’s Fish Oil test – take a handful of fish oil supplements cut them open and dump the oil in a shot glass – then put the shot glass in the freezer. After a few hours check on the oil – if you can put a toothpick through the oil and it didn’t freeze then it is probably okay – if the oil is solid then it probably is not pure fish oil and you should look for another brand.   Dr Sears talked about the new Anti-Inflammatory Diet and what he calls silent inflammation. Valerie shared details about the new Vampire Diet that she wrote about in the Huffington post – that is sweeping Hollywood. It seems those fad diet loving Hollywood folks are now eating something red at every meal. It seems like a subtle Twilight promotion, but this diet is very limiting – name some red foods: tomato, red pepper, red meat, cherries – see the list is pretty short. A better weight loss tip is to take small steps each day rather than looking for a miracle diet. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Ali Vincent in the studio with us (with her mom Bette-Sue). Ali was a former synchronized swimmer and hair stylist who tipped the scales at 234 pounds. After weeks of battling her bulge on the show she whittled herself down to a svelte 122 pounds. That’s right – she lost almost half of her body weight during the show. That amazing weight loss success story helped her become the first female winner of the Biggest Loser TV show. On our show she shared some hilarious behind the scenes stories as well as some of her favorite weight loss tips. Her best weight loss tip from our show was that being on the Biggest Loser TV show helped her look at losing weight as a long term challenge – something that she would have to work on everyday rather than something that she could just do once and forget about it. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Pete Thomas from the Biggest Loser TV show. Pete did such a great job living this new healthy lifestyle that the morning after the competition ended he went out for a 90 minute run. And when he came back the other contestants asked him if he ever turns it off – and he said he doesn’t because an active lifestyle is now just part of his daily life.  Pete walked away from the show $100,000 richer because he lost the most weight out of all the contestants that season. The amazing things about that weight loss success story is that he lost 123 of the 185 pounds while working out on his own. When he was voted off the ranch he knew that he had all of the tools to lose the weight on his own and sure enough he did. Pete also gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of the Biggest Loser TV show – he shared some stories about fitness trainer Jillian Michaels and he revealed that the contestants are put through a vigorous training regimen for weeks prior to filming the shows – we’re talking 4 hours of exercise 6 days a week for weeks so they can get in good enough shape to do the activities on the show. After going through this experience Pete feels that there has to be a different weight loss plan for people who are extremely overweight – he said that the weight has to come off fast in order to keep the obese person motivated so he has written a book titled Lose Big to help those people who are extremely overweight. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened with Andrew Wood with Muve. His company has created a device called The Gruve which is a positive feedback activity based wellness solution to monitor and increase your activity and help you lose weight. You wear the Gruve on your waistband of your pants and it records all the activity you are doing throughout the day. You then plug it into your computer and you can literally see a minute by minute graph of your daily activity. The Gruve is based upon the work of Dr James Levine’s non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT.  They created this device because one of the main differences between fat people and thin people is that thin people move more throughout the day than fat people do. And we are not talking about thin people exercising like crazy and running marathons they are just moving around more. Created with help from the Mayo Clinic the Gruve encourages and tracks all of your movement – in accordance with the NEAT method of exercise and weight loss management. It actually vibrates when you are sitting around too long in order to encourage you to get off your butt and move a round a little bit.
