Whole wheat pasta is a fast and easy ingredient in a bunch of meals. You can then throw in a variety of other healthy ingredients to make a quick meal the whole family will eat. Today we talk about grilled zucchini with garlic, walnuts and raisins. First cook up the pasta and put it to the side. Cook up some thinly sliced zucchini with some garlic. Then add the walnuts and raisins. Then when all that is cooked serve it with the pasta.

When it comes to losing weight sometimes it is the little that mean the most. Here are four small changes that are pretty easy to make that could lead to big results when it comes to your weight loss.

  1. Eat a handful of seeds, nuts and berries each day as a snack. The Fat Guy starts his day with a handful of walnuts, almonds and dried berries for breakfast.
  2. Swap. For each meal swap some grains for more vegetables. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Just swap a little a bit at first.
  3. Add color. Add colorful vegetables to each meal. Red and orange peppers are great with everything from eggs to salads.
  4. Spice things up. Try new spices to add different flavor to your usual meals.

Cheerleading is getting more and more popular as a recognized sport. Now you can watch cheerleading competitions on ESPN and in the movies. This recognition has helped grow the sport but it has also increased the injury factor as well. As teams become more competitive they perform riskier and riskier routines in order to stand out in the judges eyes. Cheerleaders are getting injured regularly and the cheerleader in the flyer role is getting hurt the worst. Here are some things to look for in a good, safe cheer team

  1. Emergency plan – ask what the emergency safety plan is and how it would be implemented
  2. Medical exams – make sure they insist that each child gets a medical exam prior to joining team
  3. Qualified coaches – background checks on the coaches along with checking references from past employment is always a good idea
  4. Certification – National cheerleading certifications are also good guides to a reputable team

putting your car seat in safely is critical to keeping your child safe when you drive. The Fat Guy could never do this right so he went to the fire station and the nice firemen helped him. Here are some basic rules but each state has their own laws regarding child safety car seats.

  • Infants 0-1 years old and are under 20 pounds  should be in rear facing car seats in the back seat
  • Toddlers 1 and older who are over 20 pounds can be in forward facing car seats
  • Older kids then move to a booster seat up until they are 8 years old
  • Kids 8 and older will want to move to the front seat – but fight that urge. You want to avoid your kids controlling the radio as long as possible

As more and more children are playing sports they are at risk for concussions. No matter how much you love the Three Stooges nothing is funny about getting whacked in the head. A Concussion is usually a temporary brain injury caused when you are hit in the head or the chin. Look for these symptoms.

  1. Vomiting
  2. Headache
  3. Change in behavior – like from Charlie Brown to Charlie Sheen
  4. Clumsiness
  5. Confusion

If you see these concussion symptoms then get medical attention.

It’s weird – Dr Fitness doesn’t eat shrimp and the Fat Guy hates curry yet Dr Fitness comes up with a curry shrimp recipe that neither one of us would eat. It’s a fast and easy recipe so if you’re in a hurry you may like it. You know that you can swap any other protein for the shrimp – but here goes – you need red curry paste, coconut milk, bell peppers, mushrooms and basil. Saute that stuff up then throw in your cooked shrimp (or any other protein). Serve over brown rice.

In order to eat more salmon and get all those omega 3 fatty acids that Dr Fitness loves so much we try and give you lots of ways to prepare salmon. This  salmon with almonds recipe is pretty easy. Always buy fresh skinless and boneless salmon fillets.  In a pan with a little butter cook your salmon. Remember – one flip on each side. Put the salmon aside. Now saute up some green beans and almonds. Spoon that concoction on top of the salmon and serve.

A hobby of Dr Fitness is to debunk the myths about training your abs. For some reason gyms don’t have special bicep or lat classes. But I guarantee that you can walk into any gym in the country and you will find an ab workout class.

  1. There is no nutritional supplement that will magically transform your stomach into Nicole Kidman’s. It doesn’t matter how persuasive the words are on the ad or how flat the stomach of the model on the bottle is this stuff will not work for you.
  2. You cannot spot reduce. Doing thousands of reps of any ab exercise on any magic ad exercise machine will not flatten your stomach. It will flatten your wallet though.
  3. Enough with the crunches. Work your entire core rather than doing one kind of ab exercise.

Beware of these foods that while good for your health may be bad for your teeth.

  1. Grapefruit – these acidic bad boys can erode the enamel from your teeth
  2. Whole grain breads – feed the bacteria that is in your mouth
  3. Popcorn – dentists love replacing fillings that have been damaged by stray popcorn kernels

That’s why your dentist is always nagging you to rinse, brush and floss after every meal.
