It happens to everyone (but it seems to happen to the Fat Guy more often) a bad day turns into a bad week which turns into a bad month. It is so easy to backslide when it comes to exercising regularly. Here are 4 easy tips on how to get out of a fitness rut.

  1. You have to change your mindset before you can change your body.
  2. Instead of exercising alone try some classes – the energy of a group will help keep you stay on track
  3. Try new foods – explore ethnic restaurants that you have never stepped foot in before then use some of the spices you discovered there in your meals at home.
  4. Help others get fit – by being a “coach” or role model for someone else  – it will force you to walk the walk.

Couscous is another one of those underappreciated grains. It is quick and easy to make and it gets you out of that rice rut. Whip up some whole wheat couscous and put it aside for a bit. Now raid your fridge for some bell peppers, onions, cucumber, tomatoes. chop them all up nicely. Now in a big bowl mix it all in and top with chick peas, feta cheese some lime juice and a dash of olive oil.

Who doesn’t love shrimp…other than Dr Fitness? Here is a pasta recipe that you can add a pretty low calories easy to make protein to without much hassle. Shrimp and pasta were meant to go together. Make about a pound of some multi-grain pasta. Put it to the side. Now saute some shrimp (which you have de-veined) is a quality marinara sauce – add some jalapeno peppers to spice things up and mix it into the pasta and you’re set.  Hey and don’t forget to see us speak and meet us at FitBloggin ’11

Imagine a Bacon Lettuce Tomato sandwich where you replace the bacon with salmon. MMMM that sounds delicious and much healthier. Here’s our salmon BLT minus the B or SLT recipe.  Good bread is the key – toast some up throw on a slab of grilled salmon add your lettuce and tomato and you are done. We eat a lot of breakfast burrito’s at our house. they’re quick and easy to make and each person can customize it with ingredients they like. So here’s the basic breakfast burrito recipe. All you need are warmed up flour tortillas and some scrambled eggs. My kid likes bacon and cheese. I prefer sauteed peppers. Having a sleepover is a fairly recent development. It started when families left the cities and started to move out into the suburbs – sometime in the 1960s. For some kids sleeping over a friends house is exciting and they jump at the chance. Other kids feel anxiety at the thought of sleeping away from the comfort of their home and their own bed. If your kid seems nervous about the idea when you two are alone you might want to try these tips to calm him/her down a bit.

  1. Try to make the first sleepover at a friend who lives nearby
  2. Have your child bring a favorite pillow or blanket
  3. Explain that different houses have different rules (sometimes this works in the kid’s favor – sometimes not so much)

Here are some easy ways to trick yourself in order to stay motivated. Everyone’s motivation comes and goes. Some days it is easy to get fired up about exercising and eating right and other days you want to sit on the couch with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and watch a Jersey Shore marathon. Here are 5 easy tips to keep you motivated all year long.

  1. Set long and short term goals
  2. Stay focused on your goals everyday
  3. Use visual aids – put a picture of yourself when you were hotter up on your mirror. If you’re  like the Fat Guy and don’t have a good pic go with a picture of someone you aspire to look like
  4. Hire a personal trainer fr a couple of sessions to jump start your program
  5. Create a rock solid support system – weekly check-ins are critical along with regular weigh-ins

The days right after the Super Bowl are the symbolic end of most people’s New Year’s Resolutions. Crowds at the gym start to thin out and people revert back to their old bad habits. Here are some easy ways to stay on track.

  • Stay focused on a long term goal – not lose 10 pounds but play with my kids, sleep better, stay hot so my spouse doesn’t leave me.
  • Break your long term goal into short term goals to stay accountable
  • Find a support system – as insurance to protect yourself from your lack of discipline
  • Plan an event calendar for the rest of the year. If you know that every season you have a race or walk you are taking part in then you have to train and you have to do the event.
