In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share their favorite yogurt dill with walnuts dip recipe. A great way to get your kids to eat some vegetables is to make a yogurt based dip like this one for them to dunk the fresh veggies into. This one starts with plain or Greek style yogurt then add garlic, walnuts, dill and tomatoes. Then grab your favorite fresh crunchy vegetables like: carrots, peppers, celery, etc and dip away. This is low calorie and delicious.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain the myth that Kosher food is really healthier for you. As Kosher foods sales increase we thought it would be a good idea to see if Kosher actually means healthy. People definitely think that kosher foods are healthier but they are not really healthier. A hot dog is a hot dog. Sure a kosher salami might be all beef without any random parts from other animals but it will still be high in sodium. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Since the Fat Guy grew up with a grapefruit tree in his backyard we thought we would share some ways to get more grapefruit into your diet. Add grapefruit wedges into your next salad. Use the juice in a spritzer or even a margarita. Eat one after dinner as a nice way to cleanse your palate. You can even use it to make a grapefruit and cabbage slaw. Grapefruits have lots of vitamin C, anit oxidants and fiber – so don’t be afraid of the grapefruit. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some unhealthy pasta dishes to avoid at restaurants.Today Dr Fitness goes through some of the best and worst pasta choices you can make at restaurants like: Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden and Fazzolli’s.  There can be a 1000 calorie difference between a good choice and a not so good choice. Some good tips to remember if you want to cut calories at an Italian restaurant are: watch the bread, immediately ask for half your meal to go – even before they bring it out, get half of it put in a doggy bag; and don’t be afraid to order off the kid’s meal menu for a smaller portion. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Katie Bell, who leads Gallup’s well-being initiatives, including the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Each day (for 25 years) they will poll 1000 Americans and ask them questions about their life, their well-being and their health. This massive undertaking will create a database of health and well-being data that will provide government, business and healthcare leaders with a consistent metric to measure the health, wellness, and prevention needs of the US population. They have to call about 26,000 people each day to get their 1000 interviews. Some things they’ve learned so far are that Colorado is among the best states in terms of well-being and as Jamie Oliver discovered West Virginia scores among the lowest. In terms of jobs – park rangers have among the highest well-being scores while truck drivers and manufacturer line workers have among the lowest. Two good predictors of high school graduation in teens are 1-the belief that there is something better for them outside of high school and 2-having an adult in their lives who believes in them.  Check out how your city and state are doing at their website www.well-beingindex.com or at the Gallup website www.gallup.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share tips on how some former fat people lost weight and kept it off. It seems they eat breakfast – in fact breakfast is their biggest meal of the day. A guest once told us to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Next, they exercised daily – they accumulated about 60 minutes of physical activity daily. So try and shoot for about 10,000 steps a day. They limited time in front of the TV. They also created some sort of support system or routine that helped them overcome setbacks. By pre-planning for setbacks ahead of time you will be less likely to be derailed by them when they occur – and we know they will occur at some point. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some easy tips to control those cravings you have for sweets. First, don’t skip meals. When you’re hungry or even worse famished, you will eat anything and everything. If you keep a food journal and track when you eat and how you feel around the time you are eating then you can identify patterns and maybe even some emotional triggers to why you have these sweet cravings. Once you identify when you are most likely to want to eat sweets then try and add more protein to the meal before those cravings occur. This should make the cravings go away. And if you allow yourself to enjoy a taste or small portion of the sweet you crave that might just do the trick as well – just don’t overdo it.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the health benefits using more weight vs less weight when strength training. The age old debate which is a better workout less weight with more repetitions or more weight with less reps. Does more weight make you bulky and less weight make you lean? A recent study showed that women who worked out with more weight but less reps had better results – they lost the most weight and had lower body fat. Remember to you want to use enough weight (or resistance) to make it difficult – toward the end of a set you should have a hard time doing one more rep. If it is too easy to blow through a set then you should increase the resistance and/or the weight.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
